iQiyi doesn't make S/S+ dramas so the budget should be modest at best. Most of drama budget goes to pay actors…
I doubt it - iQiyi was teetering on the verge of bankruptcy when this was made and promised investors not to make S/S+ dramas anymore. And in any case, S/S+ means nothing most of the money all goes to the lead actors anyway. The leads in this one are not as well known and are not in the same pay league as the leads in TLP, Anle etc.

I think the first 5/6 episodes are kind of slow but it picks up after that.
Well all of them have their own pacing issues. TSL got boring in the mortal realm and the final arc was dark not funny. BFB also went through a tough arc that it seems to have gotten out of but now it's moving too fast. TTOEM crashed after episode 12.

Yes in the earliest Chinese mythology there were male and female fenghuang. Later on they became more commonly associated with feminine or yin to the dragon yang as relates to the throne both in celestial and mortal realms. The emperor is always the dragon and the empress is always the phoenix. But the male phoenix was never erased and even in this drama, Ming Lang also speculated that he could be the phoenix. Like yao is translated to demon in English, fenghuang is translated to phoenix but they don't mean exactly the same thing as the English meaning.

I think finally MDL is holding back the ratings until more people rate it, like Douban does. That makes a lot more sense and makes the opening rating more representative.

It may or may not be, it's hard to say definitely bc the phoenix is also often depicted in Chinese mythology. Chinese mythology is very similar to Greek mythology with many gods associated with nature and the elements and mythical sacred heavenly creatures, the most important of which are dragons and phoenixes.
