Lol - honestly still not a fan of the romance here - I almost dropped it but then the last few episodes got more interesting bc of the politics. On a different note, have you checked out Blood of Youth?

Most dramas have overlapping characteristics of these genres and they grew out of each others so it is quite normal for different people to call them different things. To me, this is a wuxia with high fantasy elements. I think it is mostly a wuxia first because it is mostly about the martial world and the 大侠/dàxià spirit and code of conduct seems to govern most of the character's actions and decisions. Their powers however are fantasy level and there is a lot of focus on cultivation but stops short of immortal level and it is mostly focused on the earthly realm and no reincarnation or multiple lifespans (so far of course). So some but not that many xianxia features. I think of Xuanhuans as containing more Western fantasy elements but this one is firmly Taoist/Eastern fantasy elements.

First review of 2023 and I couldn’t keep it short and succinct.

I believe Shinning Just for You was destroyed bc the author got in trouble so all of the original content was cut out. I dropped it after I heard that and plan to just read the book instead at some point. Similarly, if they ever try to release The Golden Hairpin, all of the Kris Wu scenes would have to be cut. I am not sure exactly what happened here with the cut scenes but I find it super suspicious that they are all non controversial, mostly romantic and leaked later on. Someone else pointed out there are commercial reasons for doing so. What I do know is that a real censored scene that is very sensitive will never be subsequently released. That defeats the purpose of censorship and any leak, would eventually have to be taken down and will get the platform in deep deep trouble with the regulators, potentially impacting their ability to pass review on future dramas. It doesn't make sense for any platform to ever "leak" real censored scenes bc the regulators can simply refuse to license their future dramas bc of their bad behavior. A lot of times productions conveniently blame censors for their own sloppy work or greed. Nothing will make people want to watch a clip of a cut scene more than if you claim it was "censored".

Hopefully that doesn't expose the ML - pretending to be a eunuch and waltzing in and out of the harem is a death offence.

That was terrible - I thought I was watching a zombie drama.

I found her facial expressions over exaggerated and her acting also trying too hard to be funny and feisty but coming across as schizo instead. Probably over compensating for her other dramas where she was criticized for expressionless sleepwalking zombie like performances. But I have to say that in episode 13 and 14 she toned it down a lot and finally delivered a more natural looking performance. She shouldn’t try so hard to be funny bc she is not. Fingers crossed she keeps this up.
