I finally found it on Tencent and watched a few episodes but dropped it. Its an interesting idea but I didn't like any of the acting enough to keep watching.

Youku will solicit ads for all of them. The one that gets enough ad interest/commitments to justify their investment cost will launch first. It is always like that. The Chinese ad market is very weak right now so I doubt all of them will be able to justify their investment cost. The bar is higher of course for the higher budget dramas but they probably also get higher interest level.

Yes indeed. Apparently he worked very closely with the director who is a very good director and they evolved the script and characterizations as needed as they went along. This drama is a great example of how important investment in the screenplay and writer is and how unnecessary idol actors are.
Indeed not all writers are good at screenwriting. The novelist for Royal Nirvana was also the screenwriter and the outcome was not good. Its like damned if you do and damned if you don't bc if you get a real screenwriter that is not the novelist, they have a nasty habit of ruining the original...

I believe that the original novels (there are 3) are just a collection of short stories that fictionalise a series of strange events or so called ghost stories that were recorded during Tang Dynasty. There is no detective element in it, both Lu Lingfeng and Su Wuming and likely the rest of the crime solving cast is part of the adaptation. Of course the writer is also the screenwriter so they are all his creations but they weren't in the novel. He is a historian turned writer so the detail and accuracy of the institutions, events and how things work during Tang Dynasty is incredibly well done. And the dialogue uses ancient words and phraseology which many of the Chinese viewers highly appreciate.

Most of us don’t do background checks of people we meet randomly at weddings or on our friends friends. But good for anyone who can do that bc I certainly can’t. As for whether he will be back I hope you are right but only time will tell.

Yes indeed some good mini dramas but tbh it’s mostly bc they are so short their flaws don’t have time to become annoying. This one is a great example of a good normal length drama that is good bc they got a proper writer and dumped all the idol actors.

I am also waiting but there is no sign of S2 for Ancient Detective.

I agree she was an unnecessary addition. And the acting is not good. But she isn't important I just ignore her.

Yes I saw some posts too but they are not prominent and you have to really look for them. The prominent posts on the front pages with a lot of of upvotes are just constructive discussions of the show and acting etc. There are of course always the trolls but they are massively outweighed by the good critical reviews and discussion that focuses on the detective story and not old scandal mongering. Douban rating keeps climbing and is now 7.6.

It is possible to review this without mentioning the old scandal as it has nothing to do with the production. And it is netizens that keep bringing it up insidiously that are actually hurting the family by doing so. And of course the likes of certain reviewers who snidely imply there is something immoral about supporting this drama. The Douban comment section actually steers clear of it and with in depth discussions and reviews in quite some detail without mentioning the old scandal at all. In fact it barely comes up. Go read it for yourself. At this point it is the MDL page that is indulging in it a lot more than Douban is. That said, I understand why many reviewers want to avoid controversy. That is why there is always room for more objective and less judgemental reviewers to come along and add value.

I don't think there is a statute of limitation in China but I doubt anyone gets charged after so much time has gone by. I don't think they even decided conclusively whether there was foul play.
AX was one of the first to call for Zhang Zhehan's cancellation after he allegedly worshipped at the Yasukuni shrine. While she was still selling tons of Word of Honor merchandise and milking that sleeper hit for all it was worth. She went after him viciously on the Chinese internet forgetting that many people can read Chinese and called her out on it. It turns out he was framed but she never retracted what she said or did. She makes a living from her YT it is far from a hobby.
There are many acting and directing talent with quite shocking personal lives and vices. If I cancel them all, there would be nothing to watch. But yes indeed, to each his own.

The screenwriter himself not only praised both lead performances but talks about how many viewers gushed over how both roles were performed just right.There of course are trolls that complain about everything but it is not at all accurate to say both actors were not praised indeed there were many constructive and largely positive comments about him that I read on Douban. Not a fan of weibo too many low quality comments on that platform that I have no time for so no comment on what is or is not on there. I would also point out that the opinions of people who are uncomfortable watching him have zero credibility. They by definition either didn’t watch him or didn’t watch him with an open mind. How would they know whether body double was used unless they ogled it frame by frame???
