Me too - she is a friend of a friend and every time I see her, I keep peppering her questions about Jin Yong. She must think I am a pest. I think Jin Yong had high standards for himself and after 14 works he probably ran out of what he thought were worthy ideas.

Yes he did watch many of them and he was quite actively involved in many of the early TVB adaptations. That is why those truly capture the characters the way he wrote them. He lived till his 90s but stopped writing at 44 (to my dad's disappointment) to go back and re-edit his all his books bc I guess he realised he created great works. Actually someone I know who was China's top Go player was friends with him all his life bc she taught him how to play Go so that he could write about it properly in his novels.

Tbh I only stuck with my Chinese classes when I was growing up bc that was the only way to read all of his novels. Barbara Yung is the only actress to ever capture Wong Yung the way Jin Yong wrote her. She was pretty much a nobody until Jin Yong personally chose her to play Wong Yung in the 1983 version. Li Yitong in the 2017 one was the most insipid one. I think so far this is the first good (not great) adaptation of Jin Yong I have seen by a mainland production.
