She wants to kill her own father. Before she can do something so awful and unfilial she has to save him 3x first bc she already swore to take vows to be a nun. This made her character extremely unpopular in the novel bc she is essentially aiding and abetting his villainy by saving him from Hu Fei who wants to kill him. She is I think Jin Yong’s most unpopular female lead character bc of this. They have changed a lot of this in the drama to make her more likable so not sure exactly how they are adapting her arc with her father.

You mean the FL’s father? He is one of the villains. She has to save his life 3x before killing him. This is one of the main story arcs he is not a superfluous side character. Those are like the many many sects including the Honghua Society that may have already been written out.

Heheh I must admit I went and watched a few episodes of that after watching this. I don’t like modern romances and won’t finish it but he looks so good in it I enjoyed skimming through it.

This is how t most of these stories are written - lots of side characters with their own short arcs. This story in particular has a lot of that even for Jin Yong. I think the drama has tried to cut some of them out but this will not help that much bc there are so many.

Yeah I never finished ELOD I couldn’t stand watching Dilraba talk to herself.

Buyi and Shaoshangs story was difficult and less enjoyable as you point out but it is true to how it was written in the novel so I expected that. They did try to make it less frustrating by pretty much eliminating her engagement to Yuan Shen.

I think TMOPB didn’t have the rights to The Pillow Book story so the drama wrote their own version. I only skimmed both books for that so I am not positive but I think the TMOPB book had very little about Fengjiu and Dijun’s story in it.

If you like wuxia currently airing Side Stories of Fox Volant is very good. Also maybe Joy of Life?

MAJOR SPOILER to sequel novel - don't open if you don't want to know.

No in Flying Fox of Snowy Mountain or the sequel that was written first, we don't know what happens. It ends in an epic cliffhanger. Will Hu Fei kill Miao Renfeng? Write your own ending. So we don't know if he even survives much less marries Ruolan. But he falls in love with her really (too) fast and he is still missing Yuan Ziyi, who I always believed to be his true love.

In the books Roulan is only 12/13 years younger than Hu Fei. The wide age gap in this adaptation suggests they will write her out as a love interest.

Jin Yong wrote 雪山飞狐 Flying Fox of Snowy Mountain first. It was a short story with a widely discussed ending that I won't spoil. It was considered one of his most interesting works and one I loved bc of the use of unreliable narrators and the ending. He subsequently wrote what is mostly a prequel 飞狐外传 although some parts run concurrently which is what this adaptation is based on. Bc of the unreliable narrators and overlap in timeline, some of the events in the novels may be contradicting. Many drama adaptations deal with both books together and smooth out the contradictions.
So in summary, the novelist first wrote a fascinating short story with many parts that weren't fully flushed out. Later on, he went back and wrote a much longer backstory and gave all the main characters further definition. Because there is a love interest already in the early short story, the way the romance aspects of prequel ends is kind of inevitable. But I read that this drama may change things so we don't really know what is going to happen. I think a less confusing title may have been the Young Fox Volant or something like that.

The NL arc took too long, that is true. He should get more interesting in coming episodes.

Jin Yong or Gum Yoong was Canto and meant them to sound the way they do in Canto. I will never get used to the Mando versions I just grit my teeth and bear it. I love my own name in Canto but can't stand it in Mando.

I just can't get over the names. I am always like who-tf is Huang Rong? It is Wong Yung buddy and then it all goes down hill from there...
