Lol - I never read Ma Boyong so I wasn't sure where it came from but I am used to it at this point.

I also get bogged down by heavy use of archaic language but in this it feels quite mild. I am mostly just listening and it took me a few episodes to get used to the dialogue which doesn't quite match the ancient setting.

It could be worse. At least the dialogue is quite modern and easy to understand. I know the Chinese viewers don't like that but I think if they used more classic lines it would make this complex plot even more difficult to understand.

The thing about censorship is that people find their way around it anyway and sometimes the hidden message makes a deeper impression than the obvious. You may want to check out the movie Upcoming Summer on Netflix if you haven't watched it but just don't let yourself be spoiled ahead of time.

Sadly I think the chance of Zhe Yan & Bai Zhen's story is practically zero in the current environment... The director Liu Yifen's dramas have a lot of "barely subtext" queerness. It is pretty blatant in Love & Destiny as well.
I also want A'Li's story I am always very curious why the writer never wrote it. I always hope we would see it see the "next generation".

Yeah actually that is the big drag on Part 2, she is sick for a bit too long. Yunhe is definitely more interesting in Part 1. But at least the plot and romance moves along…
