I was not sold on the undying flower theory two days ago, but it had good potential. I think the writers and directors thought the flower would make a good prop. When I watch these dramas, I don't bother to anticipate the HE.
What I have always remembered of GMP, is the Princess' final speech, which I felt was as impactful as Aragon's final speech in LOTR Return of the King. That was the apex of drama endings. The FL's scene performance was excellent. I haven't seen any endings of that caliber and scope.

The invasion of Qingzhou was draggy. I would not call it a war, but a fracas. I missed the scene, but did Xiyan General kill Xiyan Emperor? Lou Mei lead a midnight raid on Xiyan General's camp, but her assault team died and she lost an eye. I feel sorry for the conscripted soldiers whose lives are sacrificed in seconds in these wars, while the elite leaders survive. General Qingyan was my favorite, but they killed him off. The best part of the fracas was when Jing He lanced the Xiyan General. Why did it take so long?
I began to feel sorry for old Emperor Murong and his very young concubine. Their moments of happiness were brief. Writer could have let Zigu and her baby live. Their child could have grown up to become Emperor when Jing He abdicated. Jing He and Mei Lin's wedding was pretty. Writer and Director should have ended it there, and wrapped up with a voice over narration. This comment is reading like a review, but I don't recall the details of drama, to substantiate writing a review.
I loved watching Lui Xue Yi. He showed a wide acting range. The depression and crying could have been downplayed. I loved watching Wu Jing Yan in this drama. We might not see her for a few years due to family obligations.
