And I’m convinced at this point that the big budget comes from the government trying to increase birth rates…
That's not true. All I can say is that you didn't manage to reach a realisation while watching this drama because you are only able to see these love stories on surface level and think that that's what the drama is trying to portray.
It's not exactly "as long as you have love, poverty is fine". It's going through tough times together made easier because love makes both party willing to work hard and sacrifice. (THIS IS FOR PEOPLE OF THE PAST only if you think about it) It's personal choice limited to circumstances. That generation have no phone, so a relationship usually start from someone they know and they settle for someone within this small circle of pool. Lack of family and financial planning cause them to only be able to feed their children without letting them get hungry and also a bit of basic education based on what they can.
Their children reflects the generation of most Asian mothers, which in this case is Ae Sun and Gwan Sik generation. While characters are not totally relatable due to personality, but Gwan Sik level of someone did exist in real life for a few others whom shared their story. Love back then was also still much simple. They build a family out of love and sacrifice and work hard to support their children as well. Again, this generation also lack phone and exposure, limited by their low education still. Following their predecessor, life is a cycle of giving birth, taking care of the young so that the young when grow up will be the one taking care of them back when they get old. They didn't have that capacity to enjoy and live life because they have a family to feed. Children is nearly their everything still. (Maybe being a Parent then you will understand why they think this way).
Being able to provide better for children with higher education so that they can have it better and easier in life reflects Geum Myeong to the modern generation. Sacrifice is still needed on their side because no generational wealth. Their lives got better thanks to past generation financial help and assistance but it's not exactly money rich. They are the generation that still willing to work hard to support the children without complaining too much about why they are living like this. They try their best to provide higher education for their children, in terms of providing better compared to how their parents provide to them. So in this perspective, the next generation's lives get better and better.
Geum Myeong receives as much as what her parents can provide, but immaturity only focuses on what she couldn't have, versus what she had in life. This is kinda the same for most of us as we (typically not so money rich) also want to have rich parents to enjoy life with things that we like where money can buy. Generation wealth starts somewhere, and for this case, it's not Ae Sun's generation. It's possible for Geum Myeong generation and it can start with Geum Myeong's generation. Geum Myeong's generation reflects the modern us, with higher education, better background etc. But it's not without setbacks. Even liking someone with a different financial background is also a challenge. Love is no longer that simple as some people really mind background. Certain things also come down to Fate. If it's yours, it's yours. If it isn't, then learn to let go.
Mortality rate is so real that generally Men lives shorter than Women. It doesn't matter if you are as kind of a soul but sickness and death don't just pick anyone. It just happens and life isn't fair.
The abusive husband and wife didn't really get together at the end. While they do stick together, but their marital status is already divorced. They coparent their children, and the wife is able to see the change of her ex husband to be able to put up with him. This is subjective to individual's acceptance, afterall he did finally let go of his money to save his son in law. A drastic change when he finally he is one of the loneliest man on Earth because of his personality and behaviour. When you are willing to change, some others are also willing to accept your change. Of course, the drama can put this thing in another direction, but if you are looking at a different perspective in terms of looking at your own life, wouldn't you want your life to be positive as well? There are things you can start doing or things you can start changing if you realise there are some things you might be doing wrong based on self reflection. You may still have the time to do something before it's too late for regrets. If you parents are still around, you can still show how much you love them as opposed to parents whom already passed away. If you were rude to your parents before you can still apologise to them before they suddenly no longer able to live since people age, get sick, and die, etc.etc.
I am not so good in this complexity of "explaining" but it's just down to the point of realisation.
Maybe certain culture and values differ alot for you in this drama but I also initially started to watch this drama in a 3rd party perspective, seeing things like a fairytale. It only came to a certain realisation when some things seem to be talking about me. I feel like Geum Myeong's attitude hits closely to mine, and then I realised the purpose of this drama is life lesson, it's not so much on how good or how shitty their lives are, but it's how different people at different times/era live their lives and the capacity to be able to expect and be greedy (Or not)...
A generation get more strawberry than the previous if you ever realise what Geum Myeong is compared to her mother Ae Sun and then compared to the past generation (Ae Sun's mother). It kinda depict people who are born closer to the modern era like millenias and Gen Z compared to the boomers. Boomers are able to take kind of hardship but modern gens people are just "nope"
I might not be making sense because there's alot to say but I couldn't, so oh well, that's fine if you think I don't understand. All I can say is you haven't think deeper but maybe cause none of their story hits close to your story so it's perfectly okay.
And I’m convinced at this point that the big budget comes from the government trying to increase birth rates…
I totally agree with you as a 3rd party perspective if I were to view it as a fairytale that seem too good to be true.
If you are watching this to judge than to understand, then your points do seem valid. Understand not as the point of the women in this drama, but understand that what you have now are partially from the sacrifices the older generations made. Understand that in the olden days, women status quo were deemed lower (it's not about why, just facts). But at the same time in the modern days, women status quo are kinda equal now as they can also fight for their own rights and prove that they are as capable as men. (it's no longer about the men go to work while women stay at home to watch kids).
Also, understand that generational wealth start somewhere in a cycle. If it's not your grandmother's generation, it has to start from your mother's generation. If it's not from your mother's generation, then it starts with you.
Understand that financial and family planning aren't as proper because people of the past are less educated. It also reflects that People of the past generally earn almost just enough to survive, to feed their (many) children and people of the present generally able to not only bring food to the table, but also some things that they like to splurg time to time if they have the money capacity to do so.
Also, understand that some people are willing to give a second chance or so if they saw the change in the people they once knew.
Understand that favoritism can cause a negative impact to your neglected child.
These are just examples of how we see ourselves in the story in this drama through the lives of the different couples, different people. It's not exactly because of how the story is portrayed to be "too good to be true", but how we manage to see ourselves in some circumstances and kinda reflected that we might have did something wrong ourselves that we probably didn't realise until now.
And some circumstances were also meant to be healing.
But I just want to say that your points are definitely valid from your perspective if you are watching this as a bystander. But most whom like this are because they are able to put themselves in the shoes of the characters in this drama at some point. This is not 100% relatable to anyone of us because it doesn't depict our own story, but there's relevance in the story in us because we might have been through what they've been through, and when we think about our past generations, we are actually much more fortunate and thus we also learnt to be more grateful, etc.
And I’m convinced at this point that the big budget comes from the government trying to increase birth rates…
Right? When a story has shown that financial management is so important regarding on family planning but some people are either really blind or choose to be. 🤷🏻♂️
It's THAT good when you can relate. (Generally most Asians will be able to do so since we have similar upbringing).
It's fine if all you can see is a good story.
It's meh if you find it boring. Most of the negatives are generally on this because they don't really understand - they fail to see themselves in any part of this story. Nothing wrong, it's not for everyone. But that said, just because one can't relate or understand, doesn't mean it's overrated (:
I'm loving this drama but why is IU playing a double role? It sort of wrecks the ageing of O-Ae-Sun, imo. Because…
To have the "you look just like your mother" effect
There is a scene where Ae Sun's good karma for the lady in preventing her to be scammed of her belongings where decades down the road, this lady helped Ae Sun's daughter (Geum Myeong) to get out of police custody due to theft accusation by that wicked mother of Jenny because she could identify Geum Myeong due to her looks.
And also, I think it's a mirror parallel reflection of self in another body/era effect.
Since Geum Myeong is quite alike to Ae Sun, the hopes and dreams of Ae Sun is turned to her daughter as Ae Sun wasn't able to achieve much due to her financial circumstances etc. In this manner, you are like looking yourself with a better achievement that you couldn't achieve in your current time, and your child whom look like you is doing it partially in your honour kind of thing.
9.4 is too much. There were many things wrong with this series. Many things. Especially how they portrayed the…
I think you expect the drama to be human perfect like angel, what a perfect parent should be doing etc. etc.
I won't go too much in detail about all the things you point out to be "wrong" in your opinion but there's 1 thing I would like to elaborate and perhaps explain to you on:
The drama acknowledge that Ae Sun has shown favoritism (everyone can see even the aunties in the drama and the audiences like you and I) and they even let you know what impact the son's behavior has turn out because of such favoritism.
You can ask yourself, your friends or anyone you know in their lives (whom have siblings) if their parents ever showed favoritism towards either the eldest or the youngest child. Most middle child will tell you that they are neglected. That's as real as portrayed in this drama. This drama is not your fairytale showing that everything is perfect and parents are perfect the day their children are born. Parents learn to be parents from the start, to their children turn adulthood and even until the day they passed away.
Of course, if you find that favoritism is an issue, this drama is to teach you that DON'T SHOW FAVORITISM to your own children if you are currently doing it. Learn from this drama and start applying to your own life. You get it?
We didn't like this because this is fairytale, we like this because we can relate, it hits hard, and that we should be reflecting on what we need to do in our own lives without the regrets or wrong things the drama did if applicable.
I feel afraid to say it because there’s so many videos of people crying to this drama, but it was incredibly…
That's fine, no worries about it. I think you can just move on else replying to comments that probably don't understand you will be endless.
I liked this drama, but I get what you mean by boring. This drama wasn't meant to be entertaining, it's meant to be relatable.
It's pretty much "boring" in terms of how our real lives are, but the sweetness, love, family elements that are in is what touch most of us and we can also relate to the pain of loss and giving.
This is not a drama of escapism, it's a drama of feeling real, feeling human that at some point, we may have went through.
For me it kinda relates me to my grandmother era, where there wasn't anything much but they manage to get through lives with 5 children somehow. Love life was really simple and they just work hard to feed their children to adulthood. Not exceptionally giving each children good education, but the children at least lives.
Then it comes to my mother generation, being able to provide better for her children. I am much more educated than my mother. Not exactly as great as the daughter portrayed here, but I am living better than my mother. At one point I feel I did treat my parents bad because of how they nag and so on, but at the end of the day, it's because they love me and they care as I am their child.
It's a drama of understanding life and self reflection. That's the beauty of this. You don't get it now, it's perfectly fine. But have an open mind to maybe come back 10 years from now. This is not a drama for me if it came 10 years ago. Cheers
I think it's definitely disrespectful for an original gay only Manhwa to be adapted differently with straight elements so I can understand the rage some people have regarding this.
However, for some non-manhwa readers, the drama itself is pretty good for the 2 episodes, not considering on such external factors to ruin the experience due to the low rating.
I don't think this can be compared with High School Return of a Gangster since that one is BLgaybaiting to me, unlike this one with true BL element. It's just not a pure BL with all gay couples. Of course, if there's too much of a focus on the straight instead of the actual BL, I will lower my rating. But for now, I won't deny that I like it in the more realistic direction. Call it lazy writing or not, but changing story still need alittle bit more work than copying everything 1 for 1. I am not justifying that it's okay to change, but I am also not that ick that they are doing things in this direction. Doing it to appeal for the mass or to get funding to create such production, regardless, thanks to adapting it, then I got to know about this drama and partial of the original story. I am a visual person, so regardless if the manhwa is pure gay or not, I still won't read as I only get to enjoy when I can see actual people moving.
I just find it interesting that if there is an issue or if you don't like something, don't you just give it a bad rating and move on to something that you shall watch?
There's no wrong or correct on our individual's preferences regarding on realism or escapism BL. Yes, I get that this story originally should have been gay only and there shouldn't been any straight stuff going on. But you do you, we do we? I have watched some BLs with 2 gay couples and only gay couples but if I don't like it, I just drop it. Some story with good original BL (based on your definition of BL) turns out to have either bad story or acting, and I am sorry that I happen to like this despite how the adaptation differs from original pure BL content.
I just don't understand the point of hovering in a drama constantly just to throw shade on that same point over and over again when the issue won't be resolved just by criticising it here repeatedly. We get it but we still can enjoy this for those who wanna enjoy this yeah? Or you want us to boycott this with you? Criticism is absolutely fine, but at this point it can get quite toxic...
Again, you are absolutely right as this drama indeed should have just adapted 1 for 1 instead of changing or adding anything "wrong" or extra, creating problems. But if there's nothing we can do about it, let's learn to cope and move on accordingly. You have your absolute rights to be upset about this issue that can't be changed because they already did it, but others also have their rights to determine if they can and/or wanna enjoy this drama still. Peace everybody? 😅
"When Life Gives You Tangerines (Netflix) is based on a true story.
Ae-soon and Gwan-sik were inspired by a real couple from Jeju Island. Her name was Hong Kyung-ja. She was born in 1950. Her life was hard from the start. She lost her mother at five. She raised her younger siblings. She dove for octopus and sold them to buy food. She wasn’t allowed to go to school but she fought for it anyway.
She fell in love with a boy she grew up with. He was also a diver. They dated for six years before getting married. He supported her through everything. Even when she became a village leader, he stood by her. In 2002, he was given an award for being a loving husband. They had three children and built a quiet, strong life together.
Seven years ago, he died.
The show followed the same path. Gwan-sik also died first. This made the story even more painful for those who knew the truth.
The drama is not just fiction. It’s a tribute. To a love that was real. To a woman who gave everything. And to a man who stayed."
Based on a true story, but how the production of timeline shown back and forth to the audience is an Art. Masterpiece
That seemed so out of character. Who goes running around town in their very silky pajamas? Then again, he was…
It truly is, but at some circumstances it does make sense that one will forget what they were wearing when it comes to something that matters more. I actually can relate to that
Comedic effect or not I am liking it. He alr justified that he hasn't been whom he was after falling for her.
I am not straight and I have no issues with this drama thankfully cause I never saw the manhwa. I actually found it quite nice and was hook on the first ep.
That best friend being straight will give alot of attention to the ML secret admirer (ML2) which I think will elevate that effect when ML found out he will like that someone whom paid alot of attention to him.
I like that it's siding towards the more realistic side of diversity where there is also GL etc. such that I can relate.
Falling for a male straight best friend is so relatable. While it might not turn out to have any progress between the two, I would have like my best friend to be able to accept who I am if he were to find out that I am not straight. It's a 1 sided feeling that I know I would need to control if I ever fall for that straight male in ML's shoes, except that I don't have any one whom like me at that point while in school.
I like how some straight shows include side BL (although it might be censored) just to show acceptance and diversity, so I am the kind where I also do not have any issue for a BL drama to have a side straight included as diversity too. Realistically, any kind of person exist, regardless of sexuality orientation. And if people like those straight people can accept who I am, I am more than happy.
I will probably get blasted for siding this and seemingly thrashing others BL Haven (since drama don't need to be realistic and they want escapism) but personally, I like the impact the drama so far has shown me.

Deserve 9.5 and above
Come on 🥰
However, for some non-manhwa readers, the drama itself is pretty good for the 2 episodes, not considering on such external factors to ruin the experience due to the low rating.

You have your absolute rights to be upset about this issue that can't be changed because they already did it, but others also have their rights to determine if they can and/or wanna enjoy this drama still. Peace everybody? 😅
Masterpiece
Comedic effect or not I am liking it. He alr justified that he hasn't been whom he was after falling for her.
But this Gem deserves higher! Let's go new watchers and anyone whom haven't finished watching this. Best realistic drama of all time
🤣
