More than halfway now. This drama never lets up for a moment. Just when you think things will calm down, more stuff keeps coming at our GPY. Nice bookends with that Xu dude in Ningguta at half way point. And everything about the Li Cheng/Resistance storyline is just so compelling to me. Really appreciate how they are able to portray all the messy/gray aspects of such chaotic times. You have the corruption of the failing Qing Empire, but you also have the complicated, shadowy figures of the Rebellion (personified by the lady Su).

Gu Pingwen is such a doofus lol. Stuffing his face too when the Governor of Anhui invited invited them over.

I’m dreading what outcome Li Cheng might have knowing that the rebellion will be eventually quashed.

We’ll see him soon in a few days at iQiyi scream night. Honestly, last year (2024) was even harder for Deng Wei fans lol. But I understand your sentiment. Hopefully we get more news soon about his dramas to air and of any upcoming projects. Usually just before the new year, iQiyi will give some updates on upcoming dramas to air in early 2026.

Yes, Legend of the Magnate. Even though it's "just" a guest role, I'd say it's her most compelling performance to date. She's well casted in this role and shines as Bai Yimei. Her chemistry on screen with Zhu Yawen is an unexpected surprise as well.

Such a lovely ending to the Bai Yimei/Li Cheng arc. The music really adds another dimension to their story. I wonder how this next tea arc will fare. Gu Pingyuan is heading to the Capital - and to the Li family's base of operations, so they'll have the advantage.

I first saw him in Ming Dynasty - which was great until the last 1/3, where it really jumped the shark. But he's excellent in it.

Ep 14 is very moving. While set in chaotic times during the Taiping Rebellion, to this day, this story in Anhui/Huizhou is still relevant today. There are those in the world still to this day that live in such times and circumstances. How sad and true that it is humans who kill and enslave their own kind.

Is he really dubbed here? I know he can really modify his voice into that lower register, so I'm not sure.

She has such a naturalistic way of acting - I love her here in a serious historical drama (I also liked her small role in Ripe Town).

Catching up on this. It’s been a busy Thanksgiving weekend for me. This is such a quality-made period drama so far. In every little story arc we get to know our characters more as well as the times and setting this story is in. It’s going to get messier I’m sure.

And the plot thickens...
