He can probably take outside projects if he is not already booked in-house. I hope he does and eventually leaves ZUI. I think there is slim chances for TJR as ML because GJM relies on the ML / FL’s traffic. TJR is not there yet. We will see how FoF plays out. To complicate things, IQIYI wants artists that they backed in GJM’s projects, ex. Zhang Ling He, Yu Shuxin, Cheng Lei, Chen Duling, Zeng Shunxi…etc.
I agree that GJM is problematic if this is his strategy to make his actors have popularity. I’m sure GJM is aware of the screen time in the trailer. He seems to do whatever he wants and, who knows, maybe bad publicity (fan war) still generate clicks and buzz for him? We don’t know what the actual performance will be like.
I don’t recall this problem w/ MJTY’s trailer. When I watched MJTY it didn’t felt like the main leads had less screen time. I have read some of the grievances and people say GJM sabotages his ML & FL (but Esther Yu is his good friend). They blame it on GJM's writing that the ML’s character is useless with so many disadvantages and weaknesses. According to Zhang Linghe, his backstory didn’t make the cut. There is probably some truth to this since he is the screenwriter. However, I am in the minority because I think GJM’s characters have a lot of potential and character development. In my opinion, the main leads Zhang Linghe and Yushuxin were miscast for MJTY. I think ZLH lacks charisma and he was too “angry” in many of the scenes. In the end, he couldn’t redeem his character. YSX pulled off good crying scenes (I was in tears w/her). But having the same empty stare and restrained face throughout most of the show, I thought she was forgettable. Being a small fan of hers, I was actually disappointed. The contrast of how well Cheng Lei and Tian Jia Rui suited and portrayed their role just made them look worst. They also didn't work as a ‘repeat’ couple. IQIYI had intended these two actors to explode, but turns out GJM’s trademark is in “bromance” not romance. 😄

Yeah Painted Skin Res. will be similar to FoF & MJTY. I too worry he will be stuck in a box and people will be tired of seeing him too much in the same style production. We can see this boy has a lot of potential with how he nailed his first role (I cant say the same for his co-stars) and he sings and plays the guitar! We are all looking forward to what else he can do. But under GJM, he will likely continue to be involved in some his future projects though. If he was under a normal bigger agency he may have more options taking on variety of works. But then, some popular/seasoned actors w/ capable agents are still repeatedly pumping out costume dramas of similar roles to gain popularity. TJR has one hit drama aired and FoF seems like will be another hit for him. On the bright side, he does have Rosy Cloud and that republican drama after FoF. He signed w/ ZUI in January 2023 and in the same year he also established his own studio, this sounds like he has options for outside projects here and there. This year many dramas are forgettable and the few hit dramas are unexpectedly female centric. There’s discussions that investors are withdrawing and many people envy those who have a role to play. The current environment seems risky either way. Although he didn’t film earlier this yr, at least he went on several variety shows (Youku, MangoTV) this year, which is beneficial for him to connect w/ other actors and producers + network outside of GJM’s team, let more people see his personality, and boost his popularity.

Yea that seems to be the case under GJM’s management unless there is some sort of fall out. 😄 Not sure if TJR has the resources to take other lead roles right now, but his options are minimized as GJM’s actors usually work in cliques. There’s conflict of interests as GJM has more incentive to keep him in-house making his films instead of releasing him out. Although GJM’s aesthetics are really good, I eventually want TJR to take on roles that are completely different and surprising.

Unfortunately, the screenwriter watered down DFQC’s character after the war and he even lost his career path (his people and Cangyan Sea). We even see FL and ML2 married. He got killed and we only see him come back to life for a few seconds at the end. This was a big complaint from this actor’s fans. This is the reason the producers end up compiling old clips to make 2 extended episodes of their life together. We were definitely robbed of the grandest wedding of the 3 realms. 😫
