I rate this 9/10 at the merit of acting alone. Even though the middle arc bored me, I still will rate this high. Reason is, it is really not easy to act in this kind of comedic drama. I need to praise both ML and FL to be able to switch between serious emotional and comedic back and forth.

Moreover, I think Xu Kai portray perfectly what is expected from a xuanhuan ML: prideful, arrogant, genius, and have a horde of female admirers. Finally someone get it!! I am tired with all those xuanhuan adaptation that sells ML that act as if they are very pitiful. Xuanhuan genre ML, no matter how poor his background and his life experience, is someone who can triumph over difficulty with perseverance and confidence. In the whole drama, Xu Kai exudes this unfailing confidence despite he has difficulty in cultivation in the beginning. He also nailed every emotional scenes without going overboard and making the character too emotional.

I certainly enjoying Wang Lu very much here. Will check out the novel when I have time later on.

Yeah, I read the discussion in Douban forum. I sense the general drama fans love this drama. And they lament the horde of black fans that adamant in lowering the rating at night time.

Also, I think I know why Xu Kai looks fat in some screen. I think it is the problem with the filter or lighting. It makes his jaw less prominent thus his face looks larger than it should be. It is worse when he is in Bai Jue garb which is white/pale in color. But once he wears black, he looks way slimmer.

Anyway, rating a drama low just because actor/actress appearance is very toxic. I shows how childish and vain those people are.

If you want to see by yourself The Promise of Chang An, then I can only wish you good luck, hahahaha! The acting is good. The set is good. It is only the character ......

I have not seen World of Fantasy. No Boundary, I have not checked out the original novel, but the drama is quite bad in my opinion. Xuanhuan drama that I have watched until today:
1. Fighter of the Destiny
2. Fight Break Sphere
3. Douluo Continent
4. The Great Ruler

People indeed praise Wang Juan for his work in Joy of Life. I have no comment about this since I have not watched that drama. But Douluo Dalu is pure cultivation novel. He took everything that make the series good and replace it with emotional drama. That is why I said that he does not know what make xuanhuan appealing. I hope he will never again write a script for xuanhuan adaptation. Honestly, the only thing that save the drama from complete failure is Xiao Zhan; his fans to be exact. I was active in MDL Douluo Continent page when the drama was airing. Majority that supported the drama, always sprouted how handsome Xiao Zhan was and the like.

Promise of Chang An will make you curse the FL. I hate her so much. Angst is fine for me, since I am quite an angst lover. But Promise of Chang An is a different angst alltogether. It makes you want to scream and slap the FL multiple times.

Douluo Continent ....... That was my first ever xuanhuan novel. I had hopes at the beginning when I heard it was Xiao Zhan that would star as Tang San. He is not my favorite actor and I think that his fame through The Untamed is more of because of the drama itself than his acting skill level. But, I still thought he was decent enough and should have been able to make Tang San worked. ...... The result was just another abomination. I didn't recognize Tang San in the drama at all. The characterization was off. I blamed the writer for that failure of adaptation. I sensed that the scripwriter was not a lover of xuanhuan genre to begin with thus didn't understand what made that genre appealed to the mass.

No matter how angsty this drama gonna be, nothing can beat Cheng Xu suffering in the hand of Ming Yu. I am fine with Qi Yan dying here, since I am already comforted by the fact that FL loves him truly and do anything to help him.

Agree 100% with you!! I hate how double standard people are. At one side, they hate if FL is bullied by the ML, but at the other side they condone if FL manipulate ML emotionally. These days, people think they can do anything without any repercussion just because they are female. I hate it when dramas tend to brush off any FL mistake and people will riot if the ML doesn't want to forgive FL easily. Some people has weird thinking that FL is entitled to everything.

Ye Hua and Bai Qian perhaps not a really suitable example for our discussion since Ye Hua indeed has fault, too. If you familiar with previous Cheng Yi drama: The Promise of Chang An, that drama is the perfect example for hateful FL. Never before I wished death to come sooner to ML just so that he can be freed from FL machination.

Yeah, I do see the problem that you have seen in western tv series and movies. Their strong FL is actually a man masquerading as woman in my opinion. Nothing show that they are a woman except their reproductive identity. I have my share of frustration for western series. One of the reason that I avoid them.

These past few years, my new favorite genre is xuanhuan. It is a genre that very much ML centric (at least I have never found xuanhuan with FL centric thus far). Unfortunately, you cannot find any good xuanhuan drama adaptation. Majority of those adaption turn to be abomination.

No matter what, a least Qi Yan here will get the girl. He will get the FL love and loyalty. Unlike in The Promise of Chang’an, the FL just manipulate the ML to do her bidding. It was so disgusting

Hahahahaha!!! I really want to know what is the definition of "strong female lead" in the head of those scriptwriter and director. I hate how they think as long as the FL can handle a sword or can enter a "male dominated world", it means the FL is strong .......

Bai Qian, I don't really hate her, perhaps because I was more focused on Ye Hua than her. But I will not classified her into strong FL. I see her as damsel in distress, hahahaha. I don't think I can remember she can handle her own problem without involving the ML in some way. The FL in Nirvana in Fire, that what I can say a strong FL. Even the demure Crown Princess also can be said as strong FL. They are strong because of who they are, as a female. Not because they "disguised" as male.

The other "Chang An" still gives me pain until today. I have never hate a FL that much. Not to mention even wishing a faster death for ML......

I understand the preference toward Viki sub. I have plan to check out their sub for certain episodes (if needed).

Well, even if this drama cannot match Nirvana in Fire, I have hope at least it will be close to it. At least from the 8 episodes that I have seen, it is full of characters fight with their wits and brain with each other. I hope this will have solid end and not a rushed ending without any detailed explanation.

The older I am, I find myself to prefer ML centric more and more. One of the reason because ML centric story is more logical. The story will not revolve around entitled-damsel in distress-annoying FL that only know to cry and manipulate ML to get what she wants. There are good dramas with FL centric, yes, but it is a tall order to find them. Also, these days the dramas enamored with strong FL. But in my eyes those strong FL just another entitled selfish FL with no capability to help the man she loves.

From what I have seen, this will be quite heavy drama. Perhaps you can wait until next week at the very least, and reading our comments here to know whether you will like it or not. I sense we will have a kind of forbidden love here. And it is quite slow burn.

I do agree that there are so many fluffy dramas out there, hahahahaha. I like this drama because:
1. I like Cheng Yi acting so I need to check this out
2. I like heavy drama like Nirvana in Fire and this drama reminds me of that
3. So far it is heavily ML centric (or at least quite balance between ML and FL). I am bored with those FL centric drama.

I am surprised seeing those low rating last night. And this morning, the rating already at 8.3, hahahahaha.

This is heavy palace and politic drama. Each character or faction has their own agenda and strategy. Even though lots of us here for Cheng Yi, for some of you this drama will not be palatable. Especially if you only looks for romance and fluff.

So far I like it. Watch all 6 episodes last night. I am looking forward to Qi Yan stratagem. I hope this drama has solid writing like Nirvana in Fire 1 and not just deux ex machine everything in the end.

Also regarding the loss opportunity of not focusing on Li Xuan, I see that Court Lady also makes the same mistake. I know Court Lady adaptation is pretty much following the novel so that means the novel also not focusing on ML. Still, Sheng Chu Mu is a very interesting character. I think I will skip FL scenes and watching ML instead.

I compared the story potential of this drama to ALP. It is unfortunate that the episodes number is so low and low budget as well. But story wise, it is quite good. If only they brushed more on Li Xuan background, his conflict with both clan. Youlian character also could be expanded for more, too. As it is, her character is bland and annoying. I had hope to see more of her distress being in the middle of her lover and her clan. How she also wish to protect Li Xuan from her clan.

From the very start, this should be the drama about the ML. Xu Kai character also shows up first in the opening song. Honestly, I am so bored of all those IP adaptation that focused more on FL. I am tired already with all FL distress and their need to always be pampered by males surrounding her. Why we women cannot protect the men? Indeed we are physically weaker, but we are stronger emotionally. Women can protect men in mentally way. But no, all drama is about pitiful damsel in distress. This is part of the reason I love ALP very much. Shang Gu and Bai Jue are equal. They can protect each other. Bai Jue needs to resort to trick in order to make himself the one who take on the tribulation instead of Shang Gu.

For once, please make a proper ML centric drama. Do I need to always looks for BL for getting this? BL has its own charm, but I can get bored with it , too.

Focusing more on the game is fine, since The King Avatar novel with much game focus is one of my favorite.

I am glad to hear that the novel has Tong Yao flirting. In the drama FL is so stiff and cold. I will finish Xu Kai drama watching first before starting my reading. There are lots of novel in my waiting list, hahahahaha. Will share with you my opinion later on!
