The way MJ is so sure of ML's existence in her life, I highly doubt she would have gone to that extent with anyone else. But this drama is different. There isn’t an ounce of territorial tension or unresolved romance there. If those relationships had been deeply significant, those conversations would feel completely different. To me, these guys were probably friend-zoned (or emotionally out of the picture) long before they officially became “exes.” Everyone else in Miao Jing’s life felt temporary, but Chen Yi never was. I don’t think her love for Chen Yi is any less profound. The difference is that she isn’t someone who expresses love with softness or constant reassurance. She loves through expectations, persistence, and actions. For six years she respected the separation he forced on them. She didn’t chase him or demand explanations. When she tells the police officer, “Six years is too long for me to give him,” it shows just how much of her life she willingly sacrificed while honoring the choice he made. Some people see her as demanding, but I see it differently. Having expectations of someone means you believe they’re capable of more. Imagine being Chen Yi and having no one expect anything from you. That would mean no one cares whether you succeed, fail, disappear, or even die. Miao Jing expects him to take care of himself, to fight for a better life, and to stop carrying the world alone because she genuinely believes he’s worth more than the life he’s settled for. The earrings and rain scene is a perfect example. It wasn’t about the earrings themselves. She deliberately pushed that issue because she wanted them to stop pretending those six years and their feelings meant nothing. When Chen Yi desperately searched a massive factory, digging through trash in the pouring rain for those tiny earrings, that wasn’t logic—it was instinct. His heart reacted before his mind could maintain the façade. That’s why she finally asks, “Chen Yi, why would your earrings mean nothing to me?” She wasn’t talking about jewelry; she was talking about everything they represented.
The prayer scene is another subtle moment. Chen Yi offers her his hand, but instead of simply taking it, she links her arm with his. To me, that says, “You’ve carried me for so long. Now let me walk beside you and help carry you.” It’s a quiet shift from being protected to wanting to be his support.
As for Miao Jing’s past relationships, I’d rather judge the drama than the novel. This adaptation takes inspiration from the novel, but the characters and story aren’t identical. Based on what we’ve actually seen on screen, none of the men who entered Miao Jing’s life felt like great loves. They were simply people she met while trying to live what she thought was a normal life after Chen Yi pushed her away. Chen Yi was doing exactly the same thing. To me, both of them were just surviving. Their relationships felt more like “boyfriend because we’re classmates,” “boyfriend because we’re coworkers,” or “girlfriend because that’s what normal people are supposed to have.” They weren’t searching for the love of their lives anymore—they had already found that . Neither of them truly moved on. They simply learned how to function while carrying an absence that never left them.Everyone else in their lives felt temporary, but they were never temporary to each other.

As for me, what I am admiring most is the quiet certainty of their love. The six-year separation, past relationships, and moments of jealousy never feel like a threat to their bond but simply reflections of two people trying to survive, putting up a facade, while carrying deep emotional scars. They never judge each other for the lives they lived apart because they instinctively understand that they have always been each other’s constant.

Love for You is one of the most emotionally healing coming-of-age dramas I’ve watched. Despite being raised by deeply flawed adults, the leads grow into kind, respectful people who become each other’s family long before they become lovers. Their chemistry is breathtaking, Song Weilong is absolutely mesmerizing in every frame, and the romance burns quietly rather than loudly. A beautiful reminder that love can heal without hurting.

It makes me sad because I was really hoping this would become one of my favorite dramas. So I’m stepping away with a heavy heart. That said, I’d love some recommendations! Have these leads starred in another drama where they’re more of a green-flag couple? Or can anyone recommend a coming-of-age romance with a gentler, healthier relationship? I don’t mind angst, trauma, or emotional baggage—that’s part of what makes stories meaningful. I just prefer when the couple faces those struggles together instead of becoming the source of each other’s pain. Let the world test them, but let them be each other’s safe place.
