She can look at him with such confidence and quiet certainty that the message is practically: I want you, I know you want me, and yes, I am still very much in charge here. š Put two actors together who are this beautiful, this emotionally expressive, and this completely at ease with each otherās presence, and the chemistry was always going to be dangerous. I also donāt think MJ stayed away because she had moved on or because she was indifferent. My interpretation was that CY had asked her to go, educate herself, and become someone who could have a better life. So she did exactly that. She didnāt return until she had achieved what he had wanted for her. In her mind, perhaps she wasnāt abandoning their story; she was simply waiting until she could return as the person CY had sacrificed everything to give her the chance to become.
And when she finally came back, I think she came with a purpose beyond her career. She deliberately immersed herself in the auditing work that eventually helped bring down the very people who had destroyed CYās life. In her own way, she was now trying to protect the person who had spent his entire life protecting her.
Then there was that line to the police officer when CY was going in and out of psychiatric treatment: āIāve already given him six years.ā That was probably the clearest indication to me that MJ had respected his choice for six yearsābut that her heart was no longer willing to remain silent. She had given him the time and space he demanded. She had lived the life he wanted her to live. But six years was enough. She could respect his decision without surrendering the rest of her life to it.
And now, after the finale, I think we can look back and see that MJās feelings were never really ambiguous at all. She eventually tells CY plainly that she came back for him and that she didnāt want a life with anyone else. Everything we saw before that was simply MJ expressing the same truth in the language she knew bestāthrough her choices, her persistence, and her actions rather than emotional declarations.

I genuinely didnāt know a modern drama could deliver something this complete and this beautiful. And perhaps the most tender part was watching them finally have the life they had spent years longing for, yet still feeling as though it couldnāt possibly be real. MJ lying awake at night, wondering if she had somehow hit the jackpot, unable to comprehend how two people who had survived so much chaos had finally been granted such ordinary happinessā¦ it was impossibly sweet. The best part is that his jealousy isnāt rooted in a lack of trust. He believes in Miao Jingās love. Deep down, he knows he is the biggest obstacle keeping them apart. But that doesnāt magically switch off his heart. How is he supposed to sit there looking unbothered when the woman he has loved for years is standing next to another man?
Zhang Linghe is the God of screen glue but I'm in a dilemma as I don't enjoy Wang Chun Ran. Nothing against her, somehow she just doesn't attract my attention. May be I will wait till the show is completed & then binge watch.
