Whoever said you need words all the time.. What an adorable and heartwarming movie, with beautiful performances by our lead trio. I loved it so so much. Highly recommended for all :)

Cultural differences should be respected. But your reply sounded like a statement of hate towards Japanese women and culture in general, thus I said "your tone sounds racist". I did not accuse you. I merely pointed out my interpretation of your comments. I called out your tone rather than labelling you the person. Huge difference in meaning.
Also, that research of common ancestry is ancient. They clearly have distinct genetic makeups now, and have long ceased to exist or be considered the "same race".

Okay so just completed a rewatch and this time i kinda understood and accepted the ending. Maybe I'm kinda reading…
Yes, I agree. I don't think Natsuki loved Soichiro the way he loved her. It was definitely a lot more platonic from her side. Like they were more than friends, but not exactly lovers. Soulmates, I would say for sure. I would have loved for them to end up together, but I was actually able to appreciate this ending. Men and women can definitely love each other deeply, without it having to be sexual or romantic. Not just that, Natsuki was looking for something different. Soichiro and her were too similar. Like she mentioned, she wanted someone who would lead her and take her hand, rather than someone who had her back and would give her tissues, which beautifully explains the difference between romantic love and platonic love.
You can't tell me this was made 25 years ago.. it's amazing how the J dramas from the 90s feel so modern and yet have this classic old school romance vibe. What do I say about this drama... ahh the perfection this was, the feels it gave me, the love I had for the characters and their journey together. Probably one of the best from the 90s, and now a favourite. Sorimachi Takashi and Esumi Makiko were just beautiful together, be it their bantering, the way they always rooted for each other, their friendship, their love for each other; just everything about their dynamic moved me so much. You can't tell me they were not soulmates.
If you've read the comments, you'll know that many dislike the last episode or the conclusion, and I won't deny that it broke my heart, but I think it depicted a reality that many films and dramas don't dare to portray, and that is platonic love. I would have loved for a different ending, but I was able to appreciate the ending and the writer's message behind it.
This drama was just LOVE. Highly highly recommend this coming-of-age gem for all, especially for all those who love to see a drama that dares to be different, and portray platonic love between men-women :)
you know, I've just noticed but I've never seen an earthquake in a native Japanese drama or movie. not even a…
On top of my head, there is a great drama called 'Bokura no Yuuki' which is centred around an earthquake. There are quite a few more I've seen but can't remember the names.

Like I said, you are free to dislike it. And no one's forcing you to finish it if you felt bored and dropped it.
Just wanted to let you know that I watched it, and I disagree with your interpretation of the FL's character.
And I get what you're saying about the presentation of Japanese women, and you're free to dislike it but I'm sorry your tone sounds racist, and ignorant. Just because she doesn't appear outspoken or loud, it doesn't automatically mean that she doesn't have a say. It is for two people in a relationship to determine what the balance is and what works for them, rather than for us as outsiders to deem the relationship to be unequal just because it appears like one is meek and merely appears to be following what the other says. Easy to look at the Japanese society and think of everything that's problematic with it, but if you were to live in Japan or understand the culture, then you'd have a better appreciation of the way it has come to be. Every culture is different, and to see an entire culture in a certain way, specifically problematic, is a rather biased perspective. Also, she is
I don't speak for MDL or anyone else, but it's like grading an essay. Would it be fair if a teacher grades your essay only based on the first few sentences she read, and deemed it to be boring? It may not have the best start, but it may end well and a grade should be determined only on the basis of the entire paper, not the first few paragraphs. If you don't watch a film entirely, and you're grading it based on the first few mins, then it is not fair because ratings are meant to be holistic. Again, I am not forcing my opinion on you. Just sharing my opinion. We can agree to disagree.
