I think that asking others is not useful because Chinese “costume period” dramas have 4 genres: historical fiction, wuxia, fantasy and xianxia - and everybody has different tastes (if you want a summary of the characteristics of each of these genres, send me a DM).

MDL ratings will not help you either, because most users only care about visuals and romance, and not about scripts, direction and other more serious criteria (seriously, the ratings in MDL have widespread bad reputation). An example of this is this drama, Pursuit of Jade, which in Douban is 6.4/10, and here is 9.1 (higher than even k-dramas that around the world are considered masterpieces). And if you watch it, you’ll know why it was rated 6.4/10.…

If you think it's worse than the ones you mentioned, then I won't watch it because I had high expectations for The first frost, Hidden love, The best thing...and ended disappointed, struggling between 6 and 7, finally rated them 7/10.... Always Home was a bit better, and I rated it 8/10.

I finished Shadow Love, To my Beloved Thief, and Generation to Generation in a row. I haven't updated my list, but I gave 8 to the first 2 and 8.5 to the third one. I'm a picky rater😁... but they were very entertaining, with original romance plots, I'd say give them a try (of course, you'll need to watch at least the first 4 eps of each to be sure). I'll start A Splendid Match next week, crossing fingers....
