I wonder if he has already discerned that she was a noblewoman and that her true identity is not a maid. I’m not saying he knows that she was the Shen girl, but he must suspect she wasn’t educated to this extent by the nunnery. Or, is he still just thoroughly puzzled, knowing things don’t add up but not sure why? Seems like he would dig deeper to find out why, which should be possible with his resources.

Then again, we humans often see things that don’t add up and we just let it slide, especially for the people we love.

He felt that her parents would not approve his courting her. They were always so deferential to him, treating him like a nobleman, even though he repeatedly tried to treat them like his in-laws. He felt like he had to force the marriage because a traditional courtship and matchmaker and parental approvals just ABSOLUTELY wouldn’t have worked, so he thought. He didn’t want to give anyone a heads-up on what he was planning lest someone try to interfere.

Ep 20–Did you notice how Lanxiang had been faking poor writing skills in the Lin household? But, when she was free, she let her ability shine.

Jinqi noticed her good handwriting when he happened to visit and she quickly took the paper out of his hand so that he couldn’t scrutinize and ask more questions.

This makes me wonder if Lanxiang will go back to being less than her true self now that she’s back in the Lin household so that the Lin family won’t learn her true identity.

The scholar is not handsome either. I never knew if we could really trust him either. I think he’s a legit good guy, but it’s so hard to know whom to trust. He’s good to his sister though.

The Duke who’s pushing his daughter on Jinqi. Also, the official who was a part of the defective padding in the soldiers uniforms. Du Zheng. The emperor indirectly. But, to your point, the women seem to stand out more clearly as villains than do the men.
