Hearing Yiguo, the cat was my highlights for ep 16, and 17. Yiguo meowing, dashing out from the bathroom, PS petting…
I’m surprised no one is talking about how they casually just added Yang Xi into the team when she wasn’t supposed to be there. I’m not really a fan of this but you could already see weird vibes coming off from her already. I’m curious onto how they’ll try to incorporate her in later.
Ep 16: the bear thief, LWZ just casually eating, eating and more eating in front of PS. TZ calling and almost spilling about LWZ and that damn hand writing ah! PS’s rapidly blinking at LWZ’s mum when she tried to cover up and his sinking expression knowing it’s his mom seconds later. lol. Even I didn’t expect her to look or sound like this.
We finally get to see PS reunion with the cat, and his dad with the suffocation device. They were supposed to meet before the explosion and I thought this might have been a cut scene but it’s not. It’s been moved into this new scene here.
And now instead of LWZ kidnapping PS to his home, it’s now PS wanting to go there so I wonder what his excuse will be.
There also seemed to be a new ending OST?
Ep 17: Xiao Wu and Lan Qiao bickering was giving me sibling vibes. LWZ learning about shiniang diagnosis, TZ and YX sadness and actually seeing her in the flesh was nice. I really liked how they’ve done LWZ crying scene over his shifu letter and that camera panning of his back looking out the window as this was mentioned in the book.
Hearing Yiguo, the cat was my highlights for ep 16, and 17. Yiguo meowing, dashing out from the bathroom, PS petting him, and LWZ telling him to wash his hands, cause it was literally in the bathroom, feeding him, laying obediently in PS’s arms (which was not a thing in the book btw) and that sunny side up belly was so cute, I died.
It was a sad moment, yes, I cried reading this arc, and especially seeing Pei Su’s downfall and flatlining but…
No, he got shot (Edit: he didn’t) and then was tortured with the device. It is a type of strangulation device which was attached to both him and his father throat. PS learnt as a child how to control his neck muscles to withstand the strangulation as his father would use it on him a lot with the animals. The device has an extra attachment which is held in his hand. If he squeezed the device in his hand, it won’t strangle his neck but transfers over to the other person/animal’s neck and vice versa. He really did survive all that lol. He survived the electric shock therapy he did on himself so why wouldn’t he survive this one? I don’t know if they’ll put that in the drama though.
Edit: He didn’t get shot. PS was shot at but was never hit so he only sustained minor injuries plus the suffocation.
Xiao Han Yang and Lan Qiao was able to get there first but they couldn’t rescue him because PS was the hostage, he was in the middle of the bad guys showdown so they needed to wait for the police team to get there. Actually, XHY even tried to help but nobody took him seriously. LWZ was rushing over from arresting the mole and was able to rescue PS in time. That scene should be what the picture showed. LWZ saw PS injured who was barely holding on (edit: with the suffocation device and realising what it meant as it had to do with PS’s mum and his lost memories) and so he was immediately very distraught, hugging him in his arms after taking off the strangulation device.
Whether PS (his actual character name is Fei Du) is a good guy or not varies person to person. He grew up seeing his father abuse his mother in the name of love. He’s killed animals, and really could have killed his own father but he wasn’t powerful enough to overpower him. He’s deceived his father a bunch of times though and of course does not agree with his father’s views. He even did aversion therapy himself to get sick of blood in the same chair. He says he’s a monster and was originally going to bring down the bad guys all by himself and wouldn’t care if he went to jail but LWZ made him realise that he still had a future to walk on and that he can be the person he always wanted to be. So, is he a good person? Yes, I say he is. He’s been carrying around a facade for years, trying to get out of his father’s control and had been planning to take down the bad guys after his father was hit and fell into a coma.
It was a sad moment, yes, I cried reading this arc, and especially seeing Pei Su’s downfall and flatlining but…
I understand what you mean lol. I was watching Word of Honour and Killer and Healer at the same time, both ended back to back and I remember everyone was so mad about the double bad endings that time. Try not to be too worried about it. I read the book to console myself about the lost cat, and romance moments.
There’s still much PS hasn’t mentioned to LWZ at this point in time, I think their relationship will also become a lot closer but still at arm’s length.
Essentially, what happened in the finale was that everyone was out arresting the main perps, ie, the mole in the department. PS was not able to participate but he ended up planning other things to deal with the ones not yet caught once and for all. So he made a deal and offered himself up, midway, he was kidnapped by the man in the wheelchairs people. They took him as a hostage, beat him up a little because he was going to reveal the true facts about what the old man did, and ended up getting tortured with this throat suffocation device his father would always use in the basement on the chair to try and get him to kill his dad as this device had this mechanism on it which meant that if PS couldn’t control his throat, he would kill himself and if he squeezed the mechanism too much, he would become a murderer and kill his dad who was attached to a bomb.
Ultimately, the old man isn’t the only one behind these incidents. He’s one of the main ones that’s still alive that is.
It was a sad moment, yes, I cried reading this arc, and especially seeing Pei Su’s downfall and flatlining but…
I don’t foresee the ending to be a sad one. They could, like they did with The Spirealm but honestly, I have high hopes this one will end somewhat ok. There’s no telling though, we’ll get there when it’s there in the ending.
Yes, those are in the book. They are the confrontation and finale scenes.
Yes, LWZ and PS relationship is still fine after this finale. The extra chapters show their happy life recovering from everything.
If you search up the book on NovelUpdates, it’ll show you what others had recommended. I really liked Criminal Psychology by Chang’er and Breaking Through the Clouds by Huai Shang.
Out of all the episodes by far, 14 and 15 was my favourite, plot wise. Apart from the obvious bl to non bl changes,…
It was a sad moment, yes, I cried reading this arc, and especially seeing Pei Su’s downfall and flatlining but I couldn’t help but chuckle a little when LWZ was stumbling around like crazy getting to PS because it was so realistic. Apparently, this was meant to be Fu Xin Bo’s comeback drama but obviously, this did not happen but that bit was done really well, it was so obvious, he was more than worried for Pei Su.
What I wanted to mention was ep 14 where our little glasses guy was comforted by TZ. I don’t remember this part, if it ever existed in the book, guys correct me if I’m wrong because he was a character in which I find myself relating too a lot more than the others but because he was the small side character, I only remembered the bl bits and the plot since I haven’t reread in a long time. Things like him finding and connecting key clues like that 16/7 date which we were shown in the tidbits was great as they were vague in the book.
The camera panning to PS after LWZ finished talking to TZ and PS looking at Zhang Tan? biography on the wall was very foreshadowing. Lol.
Ep 15 car chase, and PS ‘yes, sir’ was epic. I wished they could have made him shield LWZ a lot more better like in the book for the explosion but oh well, they had to tone down the bromance a lot.
PS meeting his mum was heartwretching, the You Raised Me Up playing in the background was perfect, but someone please, tell me if there was a significant in this scene being white? I don’t remember if there was such intense scene in the book other than the doctor mentioning he flatlined and how LWZ’s mum had mentioned he cried because he hadn’t cried since he was a child or something. Edit: Turns out, I remembered correctly, him meeting his mum was a new scene overwritten. Why everything was white was to signify PS letting go of his mum and to be reborn, ie, to wake up.
I liked how they shown LWZ understanding a lot more about the situation he’s been put in and how he’s investigating it, showing us his thought process with the whiteboards and in particular to that last scene where they had him in the theatre finally realising Pei Su’s family life controlled by his dad was the perfect representation of what the book was trying to do with the quotes, chapter titles and references.
Out of all the episodes by far, 14 and 15 was my favourite, plot wise. Apart from the obvious bl to non bl changes, there were some scenes that were filmed not detailed in the book which I think was very great. I will talk about it in my spoiler comment below. But like omg, can we talk about LWZ hoping around with the crutches.
There was also 1 second where Luo Yiguo showed up during PS flashback but I couldn’t tell if it was a cut scene or the kitten stage when they first met because that cat looked the same size lol.
(For anyone reading my spoiler comment threads, please read it again, I’ve had to edit some of it). 1/5/25
Impression: I was looking forward to the 5 Rings ringtone scene as that was hilarious and an iconic moment for me at least of the book. I couldn’t think of any reasons for that scene to be rewritten but yh, it’s one of those disappointing moments. That scene was a comedy relief amidst the heavy energy surrounding that entire case. Another was the lack of Luo Yiguo, the cat. It was a treat to see it make appearances both in the book and the first 8 episodes but it vanished during the scene it was supposed to show up. I guess it’s the way that scene was rewritten but damn, how much longer do I have to wait to see it meow?
I had to scroll down through the comments to find out what’s going on. Apparently, there’s been some cuts different from the script shared years ago, the first 8 episodes, and the rest of the episodes. Theres obvious ones but I’m not going to talk about them because it’s already been expressed down in the comments which I mostly agree with anyway.
Do I still like ep 9-13 despite all this? Sure. It’s all we’ve got after so long. I know that an adaptation will never be as satisfying as the book with the inconveniences of the world, I’ve resigned myself to this unfortunately.
Everyone is talking about ep 13 depicting Pei Su’s issues and trauma which I agree with. That scene was gut wrenching, no matter reading it, watching it or hearing it via the audio drama and the team has done great with visualising that scene.
For anyone who isn’t aware, the original free fan translation of the book is no longer available on their website because Seven Seas has officially picked it up to legally translate it into English and will be out for purchase in printed books.
There is an audio drama which follows very closely to the book but unfortunately, it’s only in Chinese, so you’re gonna have to find your way around google translating the Chinese subtitles like I did cause lol, I was desperate with all the censorship.
I was literally in a drought since the start of this year because nothing was catching my attention. Then, I found out this dropped. OMG y’all have no idea how happy and giddy I was when I found out this dropped. I need a Luo YiGuo in my life.
This was the right cleaner after heavy shows such as Justice in the Dark and TopForm. It was cute, funny, charming…
I saw your comment because Justice in the Dark was cancelled and I was so confused, I haven’t been around dramaland lately. OMG THANKS for unintentionally mentioning this. I’ve been waiting after going rouge with the book and audio drama for so long.
Did the novel has a happy ending? I saw the trailer gosssh th ml too cruel💀
Yes, it does. I’m truly convinced this drama if it airs out one day, might be one of the only ancient costume drama Liu Yu Ning has ever done to possibly have a happy ending lol. I don’t think anyone is truly 100% a fan of his character, I’m not either but it’s one of those enemies to lovers trope that we all like so.
