And that outcome is far more likely in the U.S. with treatment and probation and by allowing him to be productive, than in the barbaric, backward atmosphere of Korea, where the use of "drugs" is punished as if it were mass murder, yet the country has the highest rate of alcohol abuse and alcoholism in the developed world!

Ariel, love your comment and info. Please take this suggestion in the positive spirit in which it is offered: Break up your writing into paragraphs, the shorter the better. It makes the overall text appear much less intimidating and more inviting. Also, breaking it up where your thoughts/subjects shift is a great way to indicate that to the reader.
Partly, it's simply a visual thing. An open, airy-looking text is relaxing. I LOVE to read long, informative comments, and yet even I was put off by this wall of text above.
Finally, it's sadly a thing that young people freak out at comments of more than three or four brief sentences. They like messages brief, disjointed, and the dumber the better. But don't dumb-down, just space-out, so to speak. :D
