Shout out to all my unapologetic black flag enjoyers watching this show. Are there existing spaces like Discord servers for danmei or Chinese BL black and red flag enjoyers? Truly a space where no one will condemn others for their reading, listening, and watching preferences and where everyone is definitely 18+. I don't think the r/boyslove subreddit is it.
Same. I noticed that too. I think some people may have thought this was going to be something more predictable,…
100% agree. I don't understand their mentality. It's like being lactose intolerant, going to a farm, drinking raw milk, and being very vocally outraged when they get sick. I am so tired of them.
Why rating of this series drop ðŸ˜ðŸ˜ðŸ˜ ....whyy
Same. I noticed that too. I think some people may have thought this was going to be something more predictable, maybe fluffy and soft with a convincing redemption arc. They may be very outraged by the toxicity and illogical behaviors, even if this is fiction and very well done in my opinion. I am deeply invested in the source material and this adaptation as an unapologetic black flag enjoyer and applauder of Ayden Sng's portrayal of Lu Feng.
Maybe episodes 9 and 10 will change their minds, even a teensy bit?
The 'had it coming' perspective is the part I did not expect from some viewers and I strongly disagree with it. I’m *very uncomfortable* with this. I devoured the novels and am listening to the audio drama on MaoEr FM right now. The bullet screen and comments section there condemn Lu Feng's sexual assaults and torture of Cheng Yichen. They do not revel in him 'getting what he deserves,’ because no one deserves that.

Do you think some of it is because they like Ayden Sng as a person? He is handsome and chiseled, a talented musician, introverted, and has six cats in real life. Or is it because they are not familiar with the source material? I was not expecting people to overlook sexual assault, kidnapping, and torture, especially as punishment for Cheng Yichen's decision to walk away from Lu Feng.
Lu Feng is very psychologically manipulative, and Cheng Yichen was very innocent when they first met. Lu Feng can be generous and sincerely love Cheng Yichen with his whole heart. But the psychotic and violent tantrums he throws when he feels abandoned are not something to easily overlook.
i can’t be the only one concerned that Yichen literally looks like a child. 💀 they should have casted someone…
The age gap in the novel is four years. Cheng Yichen is academically gifted and attends the same school as Lu Feng. 🚨 Lu Feng was 18 when they first met🚨 IRL: We'd be calling the cops.
I looked up the cast members' ages before I tuned in and was relieved to know that Lv Sitong is 27 in real life. Ayden Sng definitely has a more mature and chiseled look. I think the contrast of his softness with that chiseled look adds even more to the discomfort some of us may feel. There's a lot of psychological torture we the viewers and the characters are feeling. (Note: I love black flags in fiction and can sit with a lot of toxicity, but *only* in fiction.)
I am happy to see all the lively conversations here, even if we have very different opinions and stand ten toes down on them. These differences will help me reread the novel and listen to the audio drama with more nuance.
Not long ago, CBL was pretty much obliterated. When a bromance came out, we greedily nibbled on whatever crumbs we could find. I never, ever, ever thought we would get anything like a Lan Lin novel adaptation.
Actually the torture part is faaarrrr worse and heartbreaking in the novel...
Better is subjective, but the novel is much more intense. I think you will need to read it for yourself, but please understand, it is extremely toxic, more than I could explain. I personally would not even know where to begin in explaining their entire dynamic. Double Helix Lu Feng is significantly softer and nicer than novel Lu Feng, if you can believe it. Even the Lu Feng from the 2016 adaptation is nicer than novel Lu Feng.
Am I selfish?cuz I don't want HAPPY ENDING ðŸ˜Both of them need therapy especially Lu Feng.
Not at all. I would love an open ending where they seek healing apart with therapy. Then the happy ending is them reconciling later. We get the black flag toxicity I love and then something fluffy at the end.
Looking forward to reading your comments! Nice to see someone else who's as invested in this show like me 🥺…
We are on the exact same page. The novels and adaptations mean so much to me. They were my gateway to danmei back in September 2020 and added spark to my too serious nature.
Six years later, I still remember Lu Feng. I have studied Chinese long enough (but I am by no means fluent) to understand the audio dramas with subtitles and read the novel with 80 to 100 percent comprehension. Lan Lin uses a lot of idioms and sophisticated language for my current level, so that is why my comprehension sometimes dips so low. I eventually get the gist but read very slowly.
I really wish there was a Discord server for her Lu Feng stories and other novels. But I worry that heated debates over how Lu Feng and Cheng Yichen behave across the adaptations could lead to a lot of tension. And as we discussed before old-school toxic danmei enjoyers get a lot of hate.
seeing what happens in China as soon as something becomes popular i'm quite happy that our boys are not getting…
Exactly this. I felt sick to my stomach when I saw Ayden Sng and Lv Sitong of Double Helix getting mobbed and knocked down by rabid fans. I wish the actors of Journey with You great success but without interactions with twisted fans.
The actors are so good, Wang Jinghan can act act!! I read somewhere tho that the series is not doing very well…
Agreed. I am captivated by both Double Helix and Journey with You. My heart goes out to Wang Jinghan because he blames himself for the low viewership. He thinks a more well known actor would have resulted in more hype and views. Heartbreaking, right? I posted an IG link above this thread to the interview where he said this.

TLDR: Love the psycho, not his sins.

If you are okay with reading the novels for yourself, here is the link to volume one: https://megajivetranslations.wordpress.com/volume-one/
I am an unapologetic black flag enjoyer, but I know not everyone else is, so please listen to your heart on this matter.
