Oh, that's right! Newbie in the area! Well, welcome to MDL. It's really fun and we learn a lot. Specially during the battles. Just look out for the arrows! They're coming from all sides! Retreat! LOL

Hey Butt, I know you don't want to engage with Kokuto anymore, but you didn't say anything about other people, so let's keep engaging some more, deal?

This you? "I think there's no need to police others on what & where to criticise after all these are characters not real people."

This also you? "Yes I agree I criticise people who ship problematic ships which have realistic abusive elements. Not with only this ship but many other ships & I won't waver. "

So which one is it? You're bothered by the speech police but it's all fine as long as you're the one policing people's opinions and behaviors? LOL "problematic ships", this is all so 2023. No wonder the lack of creativity these days is ruining Western media, and now you want to carry this over to Asian entertainment as well. No thanks.

While you're at it, please go police Squid Game as well, all that gore and those greedy, desperate people killing each other for money, what a disgusting and savage capitalistic world we live in, don't need to romanticize it even more. Let's all pass judgment and clutch our pearls at war movies too. Just turn on the news if you want to see those awful images happening in real-time. We don't need any more entertainment glamorizing all the ugliness we already see on a daily basis. Don't forget all serial killer movies too. Hannibal? It's going to taint the image of psychiatrists!!

"It's honestly not that serious imo". Well, apparently it is pretty serious if you feel the need to call out people for shipping what you call "problematic" relationships and shame them for romanticizing such situations. People are allowed to ship whomever they want. This is not 1984. The Big Brother is not watching us.

Did you also have a meltdown watching Beauty and the Beast, saying it was a Stockholm Syndrome romance or any other nonsense in that vein? No, wait, Prince Charming kissing Snow White is abuse, she didn't give her consent!

"If the media normalises this kind of relationship of course some clueless person will see a guy with XL qualities irl & think that is okay way to be treated. I will never be silenced when it comes calling out authors & people who romanticise this." Wonderful, then go knock on Tong Hua's door and give her a piece of your mind, after all, she wrote Xiang Liu to be unforgettable. He is her favorite character and he will remain in readers' minds and hearts for a very, very, very long time. Go take a look at Goodreads and see how many readers from 2014, and 2015, even before that, started as Jingers and changed their minds by the time they finished reading the book. She romanticized him to hell and back and there's no amount of pearl-clutching that will change it. The producers will probably butcher the second season to no end in order to downplay everything Xiang Liu did and everything he fought for, but the novel will never be changed and he will never not be one of the best characters in literature.

"Sometimes our beloved abusive toxic characters are not owed love by the fl just because they started developing feelings for them. Xiao Yao is definitely the smartest fl I've ever read."
Oh, if you have already started reading the novel as you say, then brace yourself, because Xiao Yao's love for him is real and it's conflicted and it's beautiful. I guess she'll no longer be the smartest FL you've ever read.

Do you see how I did not mention Jing in my comment not even once? But you fox ladies cannot praise your Good Guyā„¢ without dragging Xiang Liu into it.

"I love tushan Jing. I pray they end up together. I'm tired of fls choosing toxic men over good guys." You could have stopped at "together". Also, can you give me some recommendations? Kdramas, Cdramas, lakorns, whatever you can find, please. The FLs always seem to end up with the good guys, so I'm curious and I'd like a different plot for a change.

"I like that she seems to love him most for now. I only see friendship vibes with her & xiang lu." You could have stopped at "now". And you need glasses. And his name is Xiang Liu, not Xiang Lu.

"Liking ' bad boys' is why most people end up in abusive relationships." I'm sorry to be so blunt, but that's really none of your business, unless you work for the Judiciary branch of your country, or in a police department. And even then, it's not your business to censor what people like or dislike in terms of entertainment.

"I wish I could meet a tushan Jing in my life." Good for you. This would all be so much better if you had just praised your fave without all that unnecessary ship-shaming.

So you Jingers please do everyone a favor and go enjoy your sugary happy ending without throwing shade at other people's ships. Or be ready to face some policing as well.

Exactly. I feel like I’m missing everything because none of it makes sense. The lack of chemistry also doesn’t help. It’s difficult Kate, this is not for the faint of heart. We gotta be strong šŸ’ŖšŸ»

I have no idea. But somehow ā€œhe’s the ideal husband materialā€, ā€œI wish I had a Jing in my lifeā€, ā€œhe’s too good for this worldā€, and my personal favorite:ā€œhe lives only for you and you’re his number one priorityā€. Sure, yeah. That’s very healthy and not at all creepy.
What a clown world we be living in.

I understand all of this, and I’m not making light of these events, but it’s also true that these characters are not even normal human beings in a normal 2023 setting.

They are deities and demons, they are magical beings who have extremely long lifespans and they have powers. So yes, it’s really bad that he does what he does, but people seem to confuse this with a domestic spat that ends with violence against women.

This is not the usual man versus woman situation, with all the biological differences that it implies. She was a woman, yes, but she was in a man’s body. And not a normal man’s body. She was already 300 years old. She may no longer have her full powers, but she’s never been a normal human being. We watch men kicking each other’s butts and being aggressive with each other all the time in movies and dramas, and here, it just happened that we got Yang Zi playing a part that perhaps should have been played by a male actor. The biting scenes and everything else would probably have a wildly different connotation, but still, she was for all intents and purposes, a man, a magical man. It’s like saying that the fight between Saruman and Gandalf is awful because it involves two elderly people. They are wizards. Normal logic doesn’t apply, even if he knew she was a woman.

Even when he intentionally caused her pain (when she was already back in a woman’s body) that was in no way more intense than the pain Jing kept inflicting on her, despite his promises of never hurting her. It doesn’t make what XL did right, but Jing did more damage to XY than Xiang Liu ever could. Didn’t she literally spit out blood because of the heartbreak? I don’t see the Jingers pointing this out other than in the context of ā€œoh, but she loves him so much, look at all this blood on the carpet!ā€. And for XY, the betrayal was worse than any physical pain. They love to say how Jing was always a victim of his evil family. Well, his evil family and his inability to properly deal with them hurt XY to no end. For years. So it’s ironic to see only XL being called out for hurting her. Hurt comes in many ways. Some are more insidious because they are hiding behind a good-guy facade. The road to hell is paved with good intentions.

And of course XL has issues, that’s undeniable. He’s a demon, after all. He never hid this from anyone and he definitely is not what we can call an ideal husband material. But neither is Jing. Not in that period, and certainly not in 2023.

So my gripe is with the way these comments keep popping up, making it seem like all of these instances can be reduced to a Me Too case of abuse against women and that we are all apologists because we happen to prefer XL to the other MLs. As if we couldn’t distinguish real life and fantasy.

This main comment section would be a lot friendlier and (IMO) more enjoyable, especially for the newbies and neutrals,…
Oh, it's the usual "liking XL is why most people end up in abusive relationships". Sure, criticizing fictional characters is fair game. But passing judgment on real people? Nope.
