If a romance didn't have any hurdles to overcome (second leads, family, age gap, class gap, one lead's family killed the other lead's parent etc. etc), the drama would end quickly. And you're supposed to hate second leads so that you don't feel sorry for them. Male second leads are usually much kinder (typically an old friend who never had the guts to confess), whereas most females are almost always terrible. There are a few exceptions: the princess in Moonlight Drawn By Clouds, and more recently the second lead in Love is for Suckers - persistent, but very decent person.
