I'd say the romance and basketball plays are well balanced; there's lots of romance and lots of basketball as well. I too took a liking to basketball after finishing this and it's not only about romance but it's also about youth and chasing your dream.

"very common in many j-dramas" not true. What you're describing is common for live action movies that are adapted from mangas or shoujo mangas. You won't be finding this kind of acting in actual serious j-dramas.

dunno if you're aware of this but i think this drama is kinda like a prequel/spinoff(?) to Puzzle (2008)
