Holy crap, I was losing my senses. My vision was blurry from tears and nose plugged with snot coming out from crying too hard. The scene where Shen ladies suicide, the little 10yo girl drank the poison first so brave, and then Shen old madam going on all fours for her dil to climb on top of her. Then fl being strangled and then coming back with a whisper of breath. I felt the brief relief from Shen mandam, where her daughter is alive again but then how she would have to kill her again. Then the kindness of Xu couple saving fl, and xu mom entrusting her deceased daughter to Shen mom. Both the mom's longing gaze. So heart breaking.

But my god, I'm actually relieved the Shen ladies ended their lives in time before the officials came to gather them. When that minister said they were going to train the young ones, I couldn't imagine the torture they would've had to go through.

For this drama at least, the fighting scenes are real no AI

I'm only halfway through Ep. 1 and I already love the cinematography. The way it opens with that bird's-eye view panning across the capital is so beautiful. Even the floral arrangements in the Shen Manor are so bougie. 😂

I also understand why the Shen ladies would rather take their own lives than become state-run prostitutes. I read somewhere that during the Ming Dynasty, Emperor Zhu Di massacred an entire family spanning 9–10 generations, and one of the noble women who survived was reportedly forced to service 20 men a day as a quota.

So, similarly, for the Shen ladies, it's basically a choice between two kinds of despair: being violated every day or dying. If I were in their position, I'd probably choose to end my misery too and keep my dignity. Imagine a family friend coming to visit you in the brothel afterward—how humiliating and shameful that would be.

The Lin family were gifting pastries to everyone in the manor including servants. The pastry had Lin character on it so little LX cried bc that should've been her during the wedding day. She wasn't crying bc she couldn't marry LJQ, instead she was in despair bc of what happened to her family and the fate of her and her family. In another perfect world, she would've been the bride, and it would've been a joyous moment for both families, but now she's in hiding and now the identity of a family of servants.

I agree all the above of what Linayeol said But I can't some to hate ml in the novel. The power of writing, instead it intirgued me to continue reading. The novel was praised by public for how well written it was, and that the author was able to make ml not as hateable

that's why I switch to hollywood sometimes. They don't care about beauty like that and show all the wrinkles, freckles, frownlines etc. Chinese beauty is brutal, if there's even one wrinkle, cnetizens will blow it up and ridicule the actress.
