I like that SYS did voice out his complaint that he didn't need MQG making the decisions for him. In fact the drama even tried too hard to hammer in this 'lesson' by making his mother also make unwanted decisions for him...
Didn't SYS already know all that is to know about the Spring? He actually thought he was able to conquer it and use its power instead. He did appeal to MQG to just give him more time to control it. What would MQG have been able to tell him to convince him he won't be able to?
That was part of the main issue. Its not a breakdown in communication here. He communicated to her to trust him to control it, she communicated that she cannot take the chance. The fact remained she was forbidden to convince him any further by telling him she saw the future of him becoming corrupted by the Spring. It was the interference of the Heavens who actually wanted him to go down that path. I don't think its very fair to blame MQG for 'making the decision' for him, because what other way was there?
The other misunderstanding regarding who MQG 'loves' arose because she decided to help Suyu's father become the emperor since she thought as long as she changed that branch of the future, Prince Ping might give up and will no longer force SYS down that path. But again, I don't see how else she can communicate to him that she is doing it for his 'own good' since he won't believe her when she told him its for his sake.
As for not telling XRR, I could understand SYS's reasoning. If she was a clean slate already, why weigh her down with the past especially when as you said, he doesn't intend for her to join him at all? Whats the point of telling her , oh yeah btw you used to be my shifu, but I intend to head to my certain doom alone, don't worry its nothing to do with you... you don't have to come help me, its all good? In a way he was following her order, its his own task, and she said she didn't want to see him again...
If she was born complete with all her powers, maybe he won't even bring her back to Xishan. But obviously he needed to otherwise what will we watch LOOOL

I still suspect its to make the continuity for wardrobe and makeup easier LMAO becos in the novel she had days to absorb the energy into her body becos they travelled by foot back to Xishan and on the way she was even giving regular massages for Xiaobai who was KO'ed after the fight with the bugs.
She thought Shifu might be the same so she was giving Xiaobai massages to improve Shifu's circulation as well hahahahah it was so unserious but cute
In the drama they didn't have any break at all, she basically flew all the way back which I can understand and appreciate her sense of urgency.

Sigh for this stark difference I preferred the novel SYS who was always taking his disciples out for adventures, but I suppose that will make light of the different demons and seem too light hearted drama lol

Really great drama in a long while. Great acting, beautiful visuals of cast and sets, well paced story ( a bit too fast is the common remark) and very good visual effects.. its a very down to earth xianxia.
