In the novel he never knew for sure if Ah Heng was still alive in the huge burning desert ( think Dune with flames everywhere ) and only when Jing brought Xiaoyao to him for closure, he finally decided to expend alot of his spirit power and risk their lives to go seek the truth.
What we saw last night was really ..... a disgrace... I rather they left it as both died during the war... I read that it was a last minute decision to cram that scene in, so drama xiaoyao could' find closure' but this is not the way....
Literally, the only thing I want at this point is proper Jing endgame as promised and for the demon to go out…

OMG That love story is more entertaining than what S2 is dishing out for us honestly When they started off with Xiangliu letting Shiqi go after he broke into their army camp.... they convinced me... At that time I really was wondering, why would XL let a man who managed to track down their secret army camp when Xiyan soldiers have failed over centuries go just like that? Isn't that Shiqi a huuuuge security risk?? He didn't even beat Shiqi for a confession over who he was and how he managed to just stroll into their camp... or let him get injured by his men... I mean...right?
Here's an excerpt of XL's feelings when he recognized TSJ as the man who had been supplying their army over the past few centuries with supplies... I was laughing sooo hard...
"When Ye Shiqi went to rescue Xiaoliu, XL realized that was TSJ, he was so happy and thrilled ... he finally got a chance to get close to TSJ! when Xiaoliu blocked his face, he even smiled a little.... this was a smile of recognition! he was so happy! he was happy TSJ is still alive, and right before him. Everyone is a plot device for someone in the novel... if you gauge their importance based on how often they appear, then Xiangliu was also a plot device... The drama really inserted alot of extra screen time for XL compared to how little he actually appeared in the novel...

At this point I think they need to end the drama before Olympics begin so that there is still some time for the drama to generate some buzz for them to reap some benefits... if the drama wraps right at Olympics... I think nobody will go back to talk about it at all after the games is over

Jing is not the 'side character', he is just being side-lined at the expense of the other cast who have more flex at the point of the shoot. My guess is, if dw played Xiangliu, XL would probably have just died offscreen like he did in the novel, the news coming from the mouths of others. You think you get any epic CG scene showing his true form? lol he also won't have those fighting, moping scenes suddenly inserted into scenes of others, be it during dancing, kissing... etc he will just be a background character who needed an epilogue to tie some loose ends.
Its just the harsh truth about C ent and their investors/backers.
