Honestly, deep down Xiaoyao always knew that was going to happen with her friend. If you look at how fast she got over XL's death, I actually expected you to be mad at her..
Xiaoyao fell into coma after Jing died, and she was ready to die during her first assassination to join him, because he died... I don't see that happening with XL's case at all...She was all ready to start a new life with Jing...She looked pretty blissful in the novel as she left with her husband..
In addition, in the novel, why would I have to worry about Jing being underwater for? They are living in the islands away from the mainland, out of Cangxuan's kingdom...also they have fish core... and all Jing needs to do is swim now and then... I am thinking more Hawaii/Maldives than Little Mermaid here...
Actually to me, Xiaoyao escaped to the open sea with Jing to be free from Cangxuan's rule... she never really trusted her brother again and she cannot risk him trying to kill Jing again in future... I don't think she was happiest out at sea with XL during her coma... most of the time she was bored and missing her family and Tushan Jing...
