I binged watched till ep8 and i strongly feel that something is missing in this drama. I can't tell what? But it's lacking the impact it should have left on me. Also i think the script is completely scattered. I am not understanding what is this story trying to tell us.

Yes. Series till ep8 has hardly shown the feelings from lu qing pov. Need to read novel to understand his few actions and reactions. Maybe in later ep we can expect his pov.

I think most of the people here are expecting this story to be a romance gay story with some ML qualities of other forward thinking drama.

This drama shows the MC( xiaofan) who is written in a way to show the harsh realities of the society that time. I cannot say this for sure but it looks like a harsh criticism of society from author. Xiaofan was never meant to be a person who will resist and ques his family. Instead he was meant to blend in the society so as to compliment the challenges society faced back then with an additional layer of then forbidden love between two person.

Since start of ep 1, it was told that xiaofan was always ignored in his own family. He wanted nothing but their attention and validation. Sadly, this has already made him believe that he is less. But when the marriage proposal from bei family came, lu family thought it's s golden opportunity to pawn his own son with the opportunity cost of getting entrance in city network so as to escape Village and upliftment of their status. Xiaofan never ques it. Because he did got validation of his family. But his family validation is not genuine, whenever his mother called it was only to curry favour. But xiaofan upbringing was like that he had long been adjusted to just get satisfied with bare minimum. He keeping the respect he has for his family and love he has each time his mother asked for favour he bit down his self respect and goes to the only person who has ever showed him little bit of care because he is xiaofan and not because he want something. But since xiaofan has long understood in order to have this love he has to always proof that he is useful. What had started as gratitude in their first meet has transformed into a relationship which is transactional in nature with a pinch of love and lots of bitterness. Each time xiaofan goes to bei lu qing for favour he shows his gratitude by making soup, paying with his body and gulping down the insults which was thrown to him by society, his family, lu qing family and not to mention even lu qing actions as well resulting in further detoriation of xiaofan's self esteem.

Everytime u see in this drama it has been portrayed that how deep social differences was felt. When xiaofan married to lu xin every moment he was told he is inferior because society was that type during that time in China. It's a fact. Every time xiao fan's family has to seek connection to enter into city because society was and still is like this in China. If u don't have influence or job or marriage u are never going to have a household registration in city. The moment ur job is gone leave city and go back to Village. So it's a privilege.

Coming to xiao fan family. His father is good for nothing. He just want to get profit as much as he can. He don't care about anything and anyone. His brother has a sense of proud that he is college grad and he wants to establish himself by using xiaofan's connection with bei family. His sister is arrogant and feels she is above in village because her brother is in city. And she wants to marry with a city dweller. This whole situation tells u that how much imp is city connection in order to even think about starting a life there. His mother she understand the situation but still she never loved xiaofan enough. Otherwise since childhood xiaofan would never have felt ignored. She is as selfish as others. Even when she met with xiaofan in the car, she never asked how is he? Throughout they never considered his feelings. Her mother took xiaofan's side regarding phone matter because she didn't wanted to upset lu qing. She now little bit show love and care only because she still think by talking to xiaofan she can still ask him to get the favour from lu qing or lu family. Maybe she actually loved him but I don't see it much.

So xiaofan had only one option that is to leave everything and start a quiet life somewhere else and still he can't let go of his family. He is still soft and still wanting to get the love atleast from his own family he had been craving for it. Even lu qing love never able to give him the sense of security that he is not inferior and he don't need to prove his worth just to get anyones love. Because where classism and sense of inequality comes love goes away.

This is the journey of xiaofan's realisation that when it will be enough for him to finally say infront of his family that he gives up. He gives up the whole chasing game of seeking validation and all he want is his mental peace. His confidence that maybe he is not rich or from noble bg but he too has worth. But still this will never come in a way we see from strong ML from other dramas. His realisation and revolt will be quiet so as to compliment his character since start. And that's ok. It's not necessary that all character development comes with strong action. The realisation is the first step that was already shown in ep7. The soft and yet powerful no was also shown in ep7. Him seeking a quiet life is already shown in ep7. Still going back and forth towards lu qing and their story and romance development is yet another journey.

We just need to see when xiao fang will stand up and when lu qing will communicate and start treating him better. How is this going to turn out is a ques.

This is truth. Their relationship feels like transactional. Plus i hate to say but whenever xiaofan asks for favour and pays with his body. I feel like he is nothing but a ............. I felt this strongly since their first time. Their first time was never out of only love.

That's why I am less frustrated about his family situation. I am more concerned about xiao fan's mental health. Just now much he has to go so as to say that he can't and don't want to curry favour from bei family? Just when he will think that it's been too much even if whole world is calling his useless and he himself think he is worthless? I don't understand when this character will ever get uplifted? I mean he did tried to say no. His no was as strong as he could say. But still xiaofan is just too good. He even left everything to start a new life. A peaceful life. But this whole family drama is not letting him. And when he think that his life will go smoothly. Just then this lu qing favour comes.

Completely opposite of me. But here i am. This drama is too heavy for me I can only watch one ep per day. I started watching when on the day it started airing and here i am still at ep 16😂😂.

What u said is actually so true. And even today when I see older generation people they don't divorce because of shame, respect and sometimes even financial dependency which is a case here. But they maintain distance despite sharing same roof. Ig that's what u are trying to say. They might not divorce but since both parties are not wanting to be together but families still want to protect the relationship for lot of reasons. They might be separated. Ig that's why in ep1, xiaofan came to lu qing home to request about lu xin. Similar situation.

They might go somewhere far from their house but then they both have things to loose.They need to always rush back when their familal duties call. I actually don't see a happy ending here. It has to be bittersweet just like their love and their journey.

What caught me off guard is American GenZ talk before going no contact? I need to book a flight there. It's new. Because wdym in my country GenZ just directly ghost. 😂

Will not defend xiaofan. But let's not forget the time this drama is set in. Since old times, filial peity has been a thing in asian countries. Specially in China, since ancient times even during monarch times there were rules to punish the son if he don't fulfil filial peity. Not to mention the long hair cut. It was considered as cutting off all the ties from family. And even today although those rituals and punishments are not there. But still the concept gets followed very strictly.

So, he can't just cut his ties from his family. Now, lu qing family treat him like he is inferior. Even his own love don't take his stand. So he has nowhere to go. Plus it's s fact that in that time China used to have strong class system. Anyone below their class was considered as inferior.

So he has only him. He can either go back to his family and say that he is hurting. But his upbringing and society don't let him do that. His low self esteem and him always proving his worth. Anyone's care comes with his payback with gratitude and his attempt to prove his uselfulness.That's where his job and education comes into pic. I wonder why he can't get a job and love somewhere peacefully. But this is romance drama so that is not an option.

Am curious how this is going to end. But i get ur frustration. It's valid. Am just stating the reason why he can't do that.

In ep4, what was that reaction? I don't get it. Why when suddenly xiaofan's father got hurt lu qin gave him money. But he said no to soup and didn't said anything instead just listened to his friends talk quietly that how he deserve better and not concerned over little small town or village things. But lu qing was always helpful towards xiaofan despite him treating badly. So what was that reaction? Can someone explain me?

Edit:-i do think that lu qing do love xiao fan in his own way. I know he dont treat him well. But who just gives money this big amount without even asking or saying if not love. And notice even band-aid.

I would have rated it in -ve but my empathy bones for sun oh doesn't let me. Plus idk why I still can never watch FL on screen because of this drama when I know that she is just an actor who played her part well. But FL was written in a way that even after 5 years i have nothing but hatred for her.

Suddenly remember this drama. And instantly got irritated by the thought of FL and pain of Sun oh. Till this date after exploring almost all genre of Kdrama, cdrama. I have never found a drama that is more worst than this. 5.9 rating never saw this for any drama 😂. But this drama deserves it..

Ikr. Earlier this wasn't the case. Ig after the only one this has started happening. Last year was also dry. It's also not that they produce lot of straight dramas. I wonder what's happening in Taiwan. Or maybe lots of actors are coming to China for opportunities so they can't go back to Taiwan. Plus lots of scandals also took place with actors past year. Plus geopolitics.

Also i think china offers huge opportunities to south east and east asian countries that's why they move here. Like we saw Ayden Sng from DH.

And the trophy to the strange and unique story and script goes to "smile after tears". What they want? If it's a moving on journey/ finding second love/ or time travel/ coma / coming back journey??? Finale is the ans. 😅

Girl!!! U overcomplicated things. And my mind is short circuted just like He in first ep. 😅😂

But seriously. What u said did made sense. About first scene when doors were there and ML was opening door and clock was turning back. I also thought like that.

But this story has just too many clues that it left the tags were moving on and synopsis already mentioned car accident. Yes u can say lot of dramas take the route of showing SML love along with ML. But here u can see that they have given SML screentime even in monologues. That can still happen like other thousand Kdramas where we get SML syndrome.

Now let's talk about poster theory. Posters logic could work like that. But some poster logic doesn't work like that. From my experience of movies in my country where atleast 2-3 posters come for a single movie. I still have found cases where posters has no image of SFL or Second cp even when FL has died in movie in first 15 min. Because sometimes posters are not about their story. It's about the impact it left on MC.

Here, jiayi was in love with He and he was his first love. Then jiayi died. He is recovering from his tears. Basically moving on. It's a story about Jiayi or a person's journey to move on from their lost loved one. It has to bring tears and healing journey. SML for me is just helping in that journey to jiayi. It's a story about Jiayi.

Now, here storytelling is also a key. Imagine u write a story which is 70 percent showing first cp and then boom accident. Then how come one can show rest 30 percent on the show the moving on and jiayi healing and opening his heart after a huge loss once again to SML? And then fall in love and then get happy ending? Afterall "smile after tears". Doesn't make sense to me. Unless the smile is not romantic smile. It's a smile of moving on and accepting truth and maybe seeking future romance but not near.

This is my biggest problem with this whole story. What they want? If they show SML ending up with ML without time skip of atleast 2-3 years it doesn't make sense to me. As healing doesn't work like that. Moving on doesn't work like that. It takes years to move on from a loss like this.

So 30 percent story focus on SML doesn't feel justified. And that's the only valid reason i can understand most were confused about ML coming back.

I must say this story has diff way of scriptwriting and it's something I have never seen. U can almost predict what is going to happen in these kind of stories but here it's not the case so yes I am seated along with u in this journey. Let's wait for finale.

Just completed ep1 and I must say I love when script writers put thought when writing monologue. If i remove first scene of He going through doors and time turning back( it's significance will be told later i believe) but it did said the first note of the string is not grand but enough to know that this is the start and cut down to last monologue when it ends with first flutter of love. So this is the start they are talking about.

The whole jiayi and He thing is giving me strong butterflies. That cat thing was the best.

But i have a feeling that Diao chin was already in love with jiayi since childhood as his laptop cover was two children( i am guessing) so when he transferred to the school and heard his name Jiayi and the smile emoji he already knew that he is his childhood love jiayi. That's why he was also talking about his family bg and where are they then he was protective over him.

But why asking a question about one lyrics line is talking back and taking photos to bully him? What's with this school people? Showing as if He is someone superior. I am tired of this school bully thing in every school romance drama. It just shows how much this is ground reality.

Thank you!!!! Because I thought i am the only one who was feeling that when xiao fan was sleeping with lu qing even during their first time it's also about repaying him with his body. So yes.

About divorce lets not forget about year this was set in. Divorce is generally considered as taboo in lot of asian countries. And in old times this was more believed. Plus giving divorce for both families bring shame and harm and Lu family why would they want that? They are getting profit here. No one cares about xiao fan. Lu qin treats him like ............

But lu qing already knew that xiao fan is using him for his family. Even in ep2 and 3. They share same telephone connection and lu qing helped him to fing brother's job and then later change it. So it is no hidden fact from him. But what u are saying could be true.

Just then I am curious. Why would xiao fan go elsewhere? And where he can go? It's so sad that he can't leave Lu family. He always got profited. He got educated, his brother got job, he got love and care with insult as free. He can't go back as no one will accept him. It's sad reality for him.

But yes that ex theory and past relationship does makes sense. I will watch further to get better understanding.
