Review Last Summer
This drama is on my TBW because of Choi Sung Eun but your review is beautiful on its own, and am very glad to have read your wonderful and poignant words on this drama. Thank you.

Against all expectations I truly enjoyed this show and the main pairing despite the - background - premise being a craw in my gut from beginning till the end. I love Ro Woon and glad she found her bits of happiness by the end though she still had her work cut out for her with someone like Hwan Gi.

This might not be everyone’s cup of tea but surprisingly it was mine in a way. Thank you to everyone involved with the production. It was a lovely drama overall.

An absolutely fun, cute and delightful ride of a romcom ♥️ (in the context of it being a gender-bender romance). Cliched, tropey and average it might be, but few are beating this top-notch romance in terms of charming characters, sincerity and chemistry ✨👏🏽🫡

This is even more female centric than little women. That drama has men in major supporting roles, can’t say…
I am hoping some will start simping for Jung Eun Chae since she will be playing a “cross-dressing” character. I know I certainly am.

Just a lovely gem of a show!

Well-written with adorable and memorable characters, witty dialogue and sparklingly warm-hearted storylines. Wonderful!

Thoroughly enjoyed this beautiful, intimately chaste little sageuk romance drama.

Solidly written if nothing too remarkable. Good performances overall, and the villains were particularly superb.

The cross-dressing female characters were the highlight of the show for me, and I was very glad they remained that way throughout (mostly). Just lovely.

what makes this even more ironic is that this show is litterally written by a dude and is altered (compared to…
Thank you for this information, though I thought it was adapted to screen by a woman scriptwriter.

Your info about the drama adaptation being written to make the male lead character stand out more made me laugh because I could see how that was.

I was pleasantly surprised to find that the drama did not simply shine all the light on the ML or “second lead” and instead gave more focus to the MFC and the side pairing, which I appreciated a lot.

Despite clear flaws, this is a commendable adaptation and offered something of value to the pantheon of existing adaptations. Personal favourite Guo Jing and JingRong to date.

kang gilyoung was rather insufferable throughout lol. she got better towards the end so that's fine ig. ive seen…
The other two also acted irrationally many times, and it was apparent they are highly traumatized too. All of them acted out their traumas in different ways because they are different characters with different personalities (and life experiences as pertaining to their written/performed characterisations)!

Yoon is quite rude to other people too. YHP is the only ‘weasel’/charmer because that is how he wormed his way into other people’s affections.

No one is comparing traumas? And both KGY and CY already understand that YHP got the worst of it amongst the three of them. That is why they always treated him with much more compassion and empathy than they treated themselves.

Hwa Pyeong is quite annoying in his own way by being an unashamed leech with those closest to him. He did not mind breaking rules/laws to get his way. He is not without faults, on the contrary. You not finding him problematic does not mean others don’t. And Yoon is stubborn and irritating to a fault too.

None of them are unproblematic and which character you identify more with is just a measure of your own preferences.

But mostly only KGY got the majority of criticisms because she acted out aggressively, as per how her character’s personality was written. Personally, I love that brashness and her IDGAF attitude. (And she was disciplined for her unruly behaviour at work! No one ever said she is completely fine or right to do what she did).

This is not a new thing that female characters get the most criticisms regardless of how they are written (or/and performed) most times, so this idea that she is so much worse just does not track because she is NOT (when looked at more objectively in the CONTEXT of the show).

Sorry for butting in, but I periodically visit the comments section to revisit the squee/feels from this show…
Glad to know you are a fan too. 🥰

I am sorry, but I don’t really have any other dramas like IHYV to recommend because I think IHYV is quite unique (or I don’t watch enough shows nowadays to meaningfully compare) due to the successful execution of its multi-genres in a relatively straightforward ‘package’.

Maybe you can try other shows by the same screenwriter - Park Hye Ryeon - like “While You Were Sleeping”, “Pinocchio”, “Castaway Diva” and “Start-Up”. (I have not watched the shows themselves, except for IHYV, but they do have their fans; and detractors).

There are other shows in more specific genres which have a similar emotional impact - and superb character development - but they are not anything much like IHYV.

Sorry that I am of not much help.

Guys, I am planning to start this drama. Being a scaredy cat I am just afraid to start. Can anyone please tell…
This drama is “scary” if one is not used to gore/bloody scenes. I don’t like horror and it was a harrowing first watch for me, but it is now a top favourite.

Since you already completed Revenant, likely TG would be okay too, though they are quite different.

I’m 6 episodes in and I don’t understand the hate for the female lead in the comments lmao?? the behavior…
Thanks so, so much for saying this! I don’t understand the critical comments either. I thought she was written and performed to (near) perfection, especially in the context of the show.
(Admittedly, I am biased, as am an unapologetic Kang Gil Young fangirl).
