This is what I understood. Thank you. The people wanted a toxic romance full of fighting scenes. But the censorship wouldn't let the MRJH rape Mei Lin and all the bad thing he did in the novel pass. And the character would not be redeemable.
I liked the sexiness of the pool scene and the hidden identity game. But I know that the show could not be so harsh to watch. Plot holes? As it is not finished, they have the time to answer the questions. (8 episodes remaining)
MRJH could not be like the red flag villian of the novel. Censorship would have cut the rape scene and all the violent scenes depicted in the novel. Sexual tension Yes. Using violence and raping Mei Lin No.

Do you really believe chinese censorship would let a drama depicting how red flag Murong Jing He was in the novel air? My answer is evidently NO. MRJH could never be a rapist or harm to much Mei Lin in the drama.
