Just finished watching episode 11 and 12, another two set of great episodes. The emotional build up and reasonings for everything that happened and will happen is very meticulously written, what turned me off with some dramas is that the plot happened hastily, characters action that wanted to be use as the trigger point doesn't have a good build up making it felt superficial. Not this drama, for those who read the books knows that, what happened in episodes 1-12 is not in the book in detail, it was mentioned as sort of narrative informing readers what was used to be, so for the drama to develop those few lines into a full story arc that can relate to the next phase that is in the book, this is very excellent. I hope the plot won't collapse because this is the best script written in chinese drama in awhile.
As far as I know, they do like Zhou Dongyu in her modern/movie roles. They just don't think this particular role…
No, if you see during the time when she won the last prestige award to complete her triple crown, they were mocking her as well of not deserving it or they are scolding the other beautiful popular actress for not working hard like her to get those awards considering they are more beautiful than her. Very true, most of these people who wrote negative review already knows who Zhou Dongyu and Xu Kai that means this is targeted as per all S+ projects with popular casts, they are trying to discourage normal viewers from checking out the dramas by hogging the hot search with negative reviews. Finished watching all 8 episodes and seriously its awesome so far, acting, plot development, cgi is excellent non of that cringey cgi typical chinese drama stuff
Currently haters are working hard to drown this drama because most of cnetz doesn't like Zhou Dongyu just because she didn't fit their standard beauty just like Xu Kai they are mocking these two has no acting skills just because they think one is ugly and one is fat, well for me both and all of the casts did excellent job with their role. More of Li Yitong than Xu Kai (because he barely appeared XD) actually because her character were written inconsistently, she got a bad backlash at weibo as people are attacking her acting skills because of the bad character design. Yeah most of them are I feel like the audience impression is quite solid because all the actors delivered or else it could really be a disaster.
Editing is one obvious thing I hated how some scene doesn't wrapped up well before going to another, the camera work is another, the director doesn't know how to capture a scene nicely.
I really can't agree when people said Xu Kai and Li Yitong made easy money with this drama, it wasn't easy at all as Yu Zheng has a rule where in Huanyu production the salary for actors and actress will be max at 1million yuan(not deducting tax and agent fee) both Xu Kai and Li Yitong did 500 scenes+ each and their scenes was cut A LOT wasting 6 months of hard filming (heat stroke, back injuries etc.) when average drama took 3-4months to film, while other supporting actors and actress did 100 scenes+ and the rest will be spending on the costumes and set production (which I have no problem with actually) but when Yu Zheng as executive producer obviously didn't do his job here Xu Kai and Li Yitong was wronged and didn't even get paid much for their work, their scenes was cut, their reputation was tainted. Although props to them and all the actors and actresses who still delivered their best regardless being sabotage by awful script, editing and directing.
Had to do a double take on Xu Kai. This is the same actor who gave us the emotionless, dull Fu Heng ?!..characterization…
Yeah he did work very hard to improve his acting, and he said it himself that he is well aware of his shortcomings in Yanxi palace (he rewatch Yanxi and studied back his scenes) as he is a newcomer in the industry with Yanxi being his third drama after becoming an actor. In his follow-up works you can see his growth in his acting regardless the type of characters and because he is a newcomer his work follow up Yanxi is mostly dramas with either not so good script or if the script is good it is low budget, but so far I've seen he did well in giving these roles justice in telling the stories despite the production flaws.
the contrast between these two type characters portrayal in the same drama really blown me over with how much his acting skills has improved. However this drama has a terrible editing towards the end due to internal conflicts.
And then Once Upon A time in Lingjian Mountain This drama is breakthrough drama for him as he was highly praised for his portrayal as Wang Lu an anime character in a slapstick comedy theme drama which is hard to carry. His character is a smart and witty youth. This is my favourite drama of his as the script is not bad it is very hilarious. His acting was highly praised after The Legends, Arsenal Military Academy and Lingjian Mountain and since then his has much better project quality being offered but it was yet to be released. I enjoy following his works so far as he clearly knows he started from zero and work hard to improve the quality of his work instead of relying on his visuals. People do perceive him as being popular as idol actor because of his face, but as more of his drama comes out more people notice his growth so that's good. Sorry for the long reply haha.
Seeing as the scriptwriter said she didn't lay out the biography of each character like other scriptwriters should do because she didn't know how, some of the major plot holes in character development and logic make sense:
- Sheng family is a tight-knit family yet the parents are absent during the funeral of their eldest daughter, and the next scene Sheng father appeared is in court session and its as if he just attend another court session (some audience even remarks that perhaps even the actor doesn't know that his daughter is going to die) just like any other day without any trace of the fact that a wife of the prince and the daughter of the Emperor's most trusted confidant has just been put to death by the empress.
-Lu Yunji and Lu Qi has done so many outrageous and criminal deeds but they were pardon again and again and can even resumed their old positions because Emperor is lamenting on Lu Yunji's past deeds, but he couldn't care less about Sheng Xiao Jing daughter who was put to death without any investigations? Comparing Lu Yunji and Sheng Xiao Jing who has as much merits as Lu Yunji if not more and he is not a corrupted officials, Lu Yunji gets more lenient treatment than Sheng Xiao Jing?
-There is so many obstacles for Chumu to be with Fu Rou but the moment Fu Rou was almost rape a disgusting scenes, the scriptwriter wrote in a "funny" tone scenes right next showing Zhou Wang requesting to marry Fu Rou and Chumu requesting as well as Yan Zifang all at once and Emperor can suddenly let it happen and even said he will consider the best candidate?
- Fu Rou's poker face no attachment whatsoever when she arrived at the scenes of Princess Xinnan being whipped by King Liang to protect Chuling and she just arrived besides Empress like just another Court Lady who doesn't know or never have any personal contact with Princess Xinnan and Chuling. What more outrageous is the way Empress arrived "calmly" when the one being beaten is her beloved daughter like this is an outrageous scenes but none of the character there seems to have any attachment to how outrageous this incidence is.
-Fu Rou reprimanded Sheng Chumu saying how can he be mad at her when he is they one who is playing with another woman when the fact is she is the one who left Chumu at Guangzhou with King Zhou without a single letter and then when he came back she attempt to explain to him when she could have left a letter to any of his siblings explaining the situation
-Fu Rou's face when Sheng Chumu hold the sword to her neck, despite that was her ex-boyfriend whom she still love that did that and while Chumu is having a reluctant and painful expression for having to do this she just look at him as a tough Court Lady who never saw him before and just doing her job.
-The crown princess killed her sister just to frame Queen Han when never even have any hostile argument that could create extreme hatred leading to killing.
That was just the top of my head. There are many more scenes that didn't make sense in character wise, so this scriptwriter really just running wild on keyboard and submitting her assignment half-ass. -Chujun death

I can actually accept the reasonings for King Liang being able to get away with so much considering that's how it is in history for most of the royal and noble family as well but in terms of plot flow when his settings already existed and then it was piled up with another similar ignorance of horrible act by the Lu family multiple times when they are just family of Generals and not royal and then piled with the settings that they made Queen Han being the Empress own daughter-in-law unable to escape death because the empress ordered her execution without further investigation like she is just some nobody commoner and her father is not the Duke that is highly favoured by the Emperor who could forgive Lu Yunji previous misdeeds (looting, allowa soldier raping woman) because of his glorious previous merits and remember even Empress vouch for Lu Yunji at the time reminding emperor of his previous merits when she didn't have any personal connection with Lu Yunji himself, makes the whole setting unbearable to accept.
Did I miss something or when did the followers found at Hong Yi De's mansion has anything to do with Fu Tao's mother's death? I was talking about that time Fu Tao and his men raid the rebel Hong Yi De's mansion and take hostage of one of the remainings Hong Yi De's followers to interrogate him of Hong Yi De's whereabouts, Hong Yi De rebel because Li Shimin killed his whole family that means there is some justification there hence his followers shared his hatred as well. So Fu Tao interrogate and promised to reward this follower if he tell where Hong Yi De is and when the follower did tell him Fu Tao killed him on whim when the Lu follower came in to just asked if the follower confessed. If he wanted Lu men's to unable to ask the follower he could have just knocked him out because Fu Tao is not going to tell Lu's men the truth anyway because he wanted Hong Yi De to be caught to expose Lu Yunji so he doesn't need feel sad he doesn't even know the dude, why do he have to kill him? for no reason? with cold blooded way at that.

In this case I agreed with half-cooked script to fit a certain demand from the production company. Yu Zheng always have twisted way of promoting his lesser known artist by using known artist while also "trying" to uphold the accurate history and culture so in a way sabotaging the end products. It happened with Untouchable Lovers and it happened again with Court Lady.
