These drama take place during the Tang dynasty and feature a female lead who is a master in embroidery and a male lead who is a notorious and respected general.

The difference here is that while TCL takes place inside the Royal Palace, TSaTB takes place outside of it, in the household of a noble family.

Both movies touch upon topics like performance anxiety, bulling, and (unlikely) teenage friendships/relationships in high school. While Extracurricular is a more action-packed and dramatized story, Better Days provides a realistic and heartbreaking account of a victim of bullying. In both stories, parental figures remain largely absent and it is up to the teenagers to learn to survive the cruel education system (and life in general). Both the series and the movie do not shy away from difficult, dark (and maybe even taboo) social questions.
