Both are short shows focusing on (a) gay relationships, break ups and particularly how complicated and messy they can be which many BL dont do or try to depict. Gay struggles and issues are at the centres of these two stories - The Boy and I focuses mostly on issues of equality/discrimination, while gay ok bangok also tackles themes like HIV.
Gay male writer.

Both have an orphaned daughter who accepts an arranged marriage thinking it is with a younger, "playboy" nephew when it is with the established, powerful "uncle". Modern versus historical eras.

both dramas treat the workplace as a real, exhausting environment rather than just a setting for romance. They focus on long hours, office politics, career anxiety, and the emotional toll of trying to survive corporate life. What makes them especially alike is how they find drama in everyday interactions—awkward meetings, quiet disappointments, and small moments of support between coworkers—making the characters' struggles feel authentic and deeply relatable.

both dramas focus on ordinary adults who are emotionally drained by work and life's expectations rather than larger-than-life romantic situations. Instead of rushing the romance, they take time to explore loneliness, career frustrations, and the quiet comfort that develops when two people begin to understand each other. Both shows excel at finding beauty in everyday routines, making the characters' struggles and relationships feel authentic and deeply relatable.

So far the vibes are very similar. Same sort of cinematography and explores the same themes. They also are both a bit more mature and hint at a sad ending.

Both are romance dramas and it is rated too high. Both Shine on Me and The First Frost are highly popular modern Chinese dramas released in 2025 that captured audiences with their beautifully executed, comforting romance.
While they feature different setup structures, they share striking thematic and structural similarities:
1. The Core Theme of Healing and "Comfort" Love
Both dramas are fundamentally classified as "healing" romances. The narrative focus isn't just on standard rom-com fluff; it’s about a patient, secure partner helping the other heal from past baggage.
In Shine on Me, Lin Yusen provides a stable, grounding environment that helps Nie Xiguang heal from the emotional bruising and insecurity left by her unrequited university crush, Zhuang Xu.
In The First Frost, Sang Yan offers relentless warmth and unconditional safety to Wen Yifan, helping her navigate deep-seated family trauma, PTSD, and a severe sleepwalking condition.
2. High-Profile Web Novel Adaptations
Both series carry a specific structural rhythm because they are high-budget adaptations of massive hit web novels by top-tier romance authors:
Shine on Me is adapted from the novel Blazing Sunlight by Gu Man (the iconic author behind You Are My Glory and Love O2O).
The First Frost is adapted from the novel of the same name by Zhu Yi (the author of Hidden Love).
Because of their literary roots, both dramas lean heavily into deeply internal character growth, heavy emotional yearning, and a gradual "slow-burn" pace rather than rushing the main couple together.

Kim is a single father raising his daughter while hiding a past he never tells her about, living what looks like a normal life as a bank manager. This reminded me a lot of Jeong Jin-man from A Shop for Killers, who raises his niece while running what seems to be a "simple hose business".

Both men spend several years pretending to be ordinary people, but they're actually incredibly skilled fighters with dangerous backgrounds. Jin-man was a mercenary leader, while Kim was a black ops agent. Jin-man's hose business is actually connected to a hidden weapons operation, while Kim keeps his past as a black ops agent a secret while living as an ordinary bank manager and single father.

The moment someone threatens the people they care about, that normal facade disappears and you get to see just how deadly they really are. Both are practically killing machines, taking down threats with superb efficiency. Jin-man is colder and more strict, while Kim is much warmer with his daughter, but both would go to any length to protect their family.

Both series belong to the thrilling 'Infinite Flow' genre, where characters are trapped inside a dangerous, high-stakes game or system. If you loved the concept of solving mysteries and surviving life-or-death situations while moving through different levels/doors in 'The Spirealm', you will definitely enjoy the eerie atmosphere, survival elements, and strong teamwork in 'The Company'. They share a very similar gripping vibe!

Solid ratings, read some reviews.
Towards the very end, when she is in the movie theater, note what the movie screen shows and wha this might imply about the show itself

The action of both series takes place between 1915 and 1932. Both tell stories about love between an important person and an ordinary boy.
In Rati's Memoirs, it's about a marquis in the Ministry of Education and an orphan, while On the Edge of the Horizon is about a servant and a prince.
They are very similar in plot and have a very warm, romantic, and magical atmosphere.
Even if at first glance they don’t look very much alike, they actually have a lot in common.
