After Hana Yori Dango (original manga) got the 1st movie adaptation in Japan in 1995-- the 1st TV-adaptation by the Taiwanese "Meteor Garden" (2001) and its F4 apparently took over Asia and the concept of "flower boys fever" got started.

Moon River is a Chinese spinoff. The underlying story is similar to all the other adaptations/remakes of Hana Yori Dango-- countryside girl ends up attending a private academy where a group of friends (kind of F3) rule student life. Rich boy falls for the poor girl, however, the plot differs. Unlike the other adaptations, this lead male undergoes character development. In a way, the story is less superficial because the crux of the show is not only about overcoming the lead male's mother/parents objection and vying against other rival girls.

This is also another series which had many different adaptations of the same story before. It was adapted from the Japanese Shojo manga called Itazura no Kiss, and just like Meteor Garden, has many versions alongside this one.
