What a waste of potential

You cannot tell me that a professional production company was not able to find a small piece of private beach somewhere to get the scenes filmed. Even in Pattaya or Phuket there are places you can film without having white old Russian tourists in speedos walk through the frame or gawk at them.
(On the other hand… with two God-like pale Asian males making out on a beach chair in the middle of day, they might have thought they’re shooting porn for all that they saw!)
And if so, then go have the set up at 5 am when noone can disturb or arrange a barricade of some sort. In one scene you can literally see one staff still with a script in her hand, run towards some tourists who were just minding their business walking along the beach, and frantically wave them into a different direction.
Such a waste of YunQi and HaoYirans talent, time and effort! They deserved so much more than a last minute sloppy homevideo production.
(If you tell me that this was not an actual Special Episode, but rather a video focusing on the sunscreen sponsor, I‘ll just sigh and take this back 😔)

I really wanted to like this drama

I really wanted to like this drama because the reuters were genuinely impressive, and the two leads deliver solid performances. The core story is also passable enough to keep things moving. Unfortunately, the overall execution completely pulled me out of the experience.

The post-production is incredibly distracting. The jump cuts feel random, the framing choices are awkward, and the color grading often looks off. Instead of enhancing emotional moments, the editing constantly breaks immersion.

The writing also struggles to build a believable world. The dialogue rarely feels natural, and there’s very little character setup to help viewers understand motivations or emotional stakes. I kept asking myself why the characters were making certain decisions because the drama never properly establishes their goals or internal conflicts.

One of the biggest issues is how plot developments seem to come out of nowhere. The sudden obsession with the throne and the FL’s abrupt desire for absolute power feel underdeveloped rather than earned. Important story beats are introduced without enough buildup, making the narrative feel disjointed and emotionally unconvincing.

Overall, while the cast does their best with the material, the weak storytelling and distracting production choices made this a difficult watch for me, and ultimately why I decided to drop it.

start I liked everything rating 10 but after 7 something story wasn't satisfying from Romance to main plot to villian

start - I liked the start really I thought it would a good one but no

mid- characters are good so decided to continue even though alot keeps happening every new ep there's new victims who come for consultation then there's a villian plotting against them then there's a romance? and accidents......

romance - I thought it's gonna be slow burn start was good I thought they were ex's but they were friends , ml has crush fml doesn't, but when they meet again FML falls too fast I think? and ml rejects her because a it's related to her father death and ml father covering it and mom's side company,
only push and pull till 11? because ml can't date because of what happened to her dad he hides and rejects her ? the kiss at random moment and before confession I dislike I lost interest in them romance was the most boring in this actually, it's fast and they don't date atleast till 11 but kiss many times

FML fashion is really good in this she looks pretty but it disappears in middle I like when FML don't dress up too plain ,or poor or only formal clothing but feminine, I really liked her in the start but poorly written in sense of romance

Visione rilassante, un vero comfort drama.

La serie contiene una domanda che dà il titolo al lavoro: a che età, esattamente, si sboccia? La risposta, in originale coreano "Moraeedo kkochi pinda" («anche nella sabbia i fiori fioriscono») sostiene l'idea che non esista un'età precisa, una stagione programmata. È il momento in cui qualcuno smette di misurarsi con ciò che avrebbe dovuto essere e comincia a esistere come ciò che è. Kim Baek-doo, il protagonista, ha 32 anni, e pratica, come il padre e i fratelli più grandi il ssireum, la lotta coreana . A differenza di loro però non vince mai, ha alle spalle una famiglia di campioni che lo guarda con l'affetto discreto di chi ha rinunciato ad aspettarsi grandi cose, e un'espressione permanente che oscilla tra il dormiveglia e la tenerezza involontaria. E' l'anti-eroe per eccellenza, quanto di più diverso ci hanno abituato i drama asiatici, e questo è il primo elemento di novità e di freschezza.

Il ssireum — la lotta tradizionale coreana su sabbia, patrimonio culturale praticato sin dalla dinastia Joseon e ancora oggi disciplina agonistica con campionati nazionali — non è soltanto lo sfondo della storia ma la sua metafora portante: due corpi che si afferrano, che cercano il baricentro dell'avversario, che cadono o reggono su un terreno che non dà punti d'appoggio stabili.
Per prepararsi fisicamente al ruolo, Jang Dong-yoon ha dovuto mettere 14 kg di massa nel corso di diversi mesi attraverso un allenamento intensivo e una dieta pensata per replicare la corporatura di un lottatore professionista, una scelta che racconta già molto sull'approccio produttivo della serie: non la fisica idealizzata del drama mainstream(vedi Lovely runner con un Byeon Wook seok, risibile nei panni del nuotatore agonistico con il fisico slanciato e snello) , ma una credibilità che passa attraverso il peso specifico dei corpi sulla sabbia. Il risultato visivo e atletico è convincente, ed è uno dei pochi casi in cui la componente sportiva sullo schermo non odora di menzogna poco plausibile.

Kim Jin-woo, il regista, non è un nome che porta in dote un percorso autoriale particolarmente ricco o con uno stile definito, così come Won Yoo-jung alla sceneggiatura costruisce un impianto narrativo che mira alla solidità, non ambisce a spingere senza mezzi per poterlo fare come in altri lavori blasonati, votati più per fandom che per effettiva qualità.
La scelta di ambientare tutto nella cittadina marittima immaginaria di Geosan, un luogo dove il sireum è quasi religione di stato, dove tutti si conoscono, dove il pettegolezzo circola con la velocità del vento tra le risaie, è funzionale a una grammatica narrativa che vuole il villaggio come organismo collettivo, quasi un personaggio che respira e mormora intorno agli eventi principali. L'atmosfera che ne risulta è genuinamente calda, rusticamente accogliente, rilassante: una serie senza sprechi, ambientata in una città di provincia che si rispecchia perfettamente nell'onestà greggia e non rifinita di Kim Baek Du, il protagonista.
Questa qualità: farsi guardare senza fatica, far respirare l'occhio, con un ritmo quotidiano, senza scossoni, senza il ricatto continuo del colpo di scena, senza la manipolazione dello spettatore che tanti drama coreani è diventato quasi caratteristica fondativa, è un merito reale, così come è un merito aver voluto presentare il ssireum a chi segue fuori dai "confini".

COSA HA QUESTA SERIE CHE MERITA ATTENZIONE:

La sceneggiatura MANCA di quell'istinto predatorio che caratterizza una quantità enorme di drama asiatici e non, dove i personaggi esistono fondamentalmente come materiale da consumare al servizio della tensione drammatica. Il meccanismo predatorio costruisce un personaggio abbastanza, quanto basta perché lo spettatore si affezioni, e poi lo si usa, lo si umilia, lo si tormenta, lo fa soffrire per massimizzare la risposta emotiva del pubblico, senza che quella sofferenza serva davvero alla storia o alla crescita del personaggio stesso. È una forma di sfruttamento narrativo che veste i panni del dramma ma che in realtà è semplicemente ricatto: ti faccio soffrire per il personaggio perché così non smetti di guardare, non perché quella sofferenza significhi qualcosa, e dopo aver visto Something in the rain, che è l'apoteosi di questo discorso, la differenza mi è ancora più chiara.

Qui Baek-du viene mostrato nella sua incompiutezza, nella sua storia di aspettative non realizzate, nella solitudine discreta di chi ha deluso una famiglia di campioni ma non viene mai abusato narrativamente per produrre lacrime facili. La sua vulnerabilità è trattata con una specie di rispetto quasi pudico: la sceneggiatura la mostra, la lascia esistere, non la sfrutta. È la differenza tra un autore che vuole bene ai propri personaggi e un autore che li usa come strumenti. Nel primo caso senti che il personaggio ha una vita che precede e supera la storia che lo contiene; nel secondo senti che esiste soltanto in funzione dei picchi emotivi che deve produrre, e che fuori da quei picchi non è niente.

I personaggi trattati con rispetto si depositano da qualche parte e continuano a esistere dopo che lo schermo si è spento, lasciandoti una sensazione di placido tepore.

Il problema principale della serie è strutturale: Fiori nella sabbia, prova a essere contemporaneamente un romance, un crime thriller, uno sports drama e uno slice-of-life rurale, e non riesce a integrare queste quattro anime in un corpo narrativo unico che funzioni in ogni sua parte. Il risultato è una serie che procede per compartimenti stagni, dove lo sport sparisce per episodi interi per poi tornare improvvisamente quando la sceneggiatura ricorda che era parte identitaria della serie, dove l'elemento crime si accumula nei due episodi finali in rivelazioni precipitose che avrebbero avuto bisogno di molto più spazio per sedimentarsi, e dove il romance viene ritardato artificialmente ben oltre la soglia della credibilità narrativa. Baek-doo dichiara i propri sentimenti dopo 2 terzi della serie, e la risposta definitiva arriva sostanzialmente nel settimo minuto finale: lo spettatore sa già dall'episodio tre come andrà a finire, e tuttavia deve percorrere nove ore di trama che lo tengono separato da una conclusione che la serie non ha il coraggio di anticipare. Non è tensione narrativa, è procrastinazione strutturale.

Altro elemento di pregio è la rappresentazione della genitorialità. Nei drama capita spesso di imbattersi in famiglie disfunzionali, genitori emotivamente assenti, padri autoritari, madri ipercontrollanti o relazioni costruite quasi esclusivamente sul conflitto. Fiori nella sabbia sceglie una strada diversa. Pur senza idealizzarle, le famiglie vengono rappresentate come luoghi di sostegno, protezione e responsabilità reciproca. I genitori sbagliano, ma cercano di capire. Si preoccupano, incoraggiano, si mettono in discussione e restano presenti anche quando non hanno tutte le risposte. È una normalità affettiva che raramente trovo nei drama asiatici e che proprio per questo finisce per distinguersi.
In moltissimi drama il protagonista positivo nasce nonostante la famiglia. Qui, invece il protagonista diventa l'uomo che è anche grazie alla famiglia che lo circonda.
La madre lo sostiene senza umiliarlo per i suoi fallimenti. Il padre può essere apparentemente distaccato ma non è una figura tossica. I fratelli lo prendono in giro ma c'è affetto reale. Quando lui vacilla, nessuno lo tratta come un peso o come una delusione.
Questa rete di affetto quotidiano spiega molto del personaggio.
In fondo Baek-du è così fiducioso negli altri, così poco cinico e così capace di amare senza calcolo anche perché è cresciuto in un ambiente che, pur con tutti i suoi difetti, gli ha insegnato che l'amore non è un premio da meritare.

COSA NON HA FUNZIONATO:
L'arco crime è forse l'elemento più deludente della produzione. Non per incompetenza esecutiva ma per un deficit di "concezione" che riguarda il peso dell'assassino all'interno della storia: chi compie i crimini non è per nulla presente nel tessuto narrativo tanto da costituire una rivelazione che, a scopo cliffhanger, risulta un escamotage che alla fine ha poco senso. Il confronto con Mous, serie crime, è impietoso: lì il colpevole esiste, pesa, vive nella storia, e quando la verità emerge ogni scena precedente acquista un secondo strato di senso. Qui, al contrario, la rivelazione produce più una reazione che non dà scossoni emotivi. L'arresto poi non è non mostrato, le conseguenze sulla comunità (che avrebbe dovuto essere sconvolta, lacerata da una verità che la riguarda dall'interno) sono appena accennate, come se la sceneggiatura avesse esaurito il respiro proprio nel momento in cui avrebbe dovuto inspirare più a fondo. Molto deludente.
Anche poco plausibile che questo personaggio, bravissimo nell'interpretazione, venga ricordato così dal nulla dopo 12 ore di ripetere sempre le stesse dinamiche, e si presenti per compiere l'ennesimo misfatto avendo tutto il tempo per consumarlo, ma contentandosi di una chiacchierata intimidatoria. o:O.
Non mi ha convinto.

Altro problema è stato per me il villaggio: Geosan non è soltanto uno sfondo. Per buona parte della serie il villaggio agisce come una sorta di coro comunitario, una presenza collettiva che osserva e filtra gli eventi attraverso pettegolezzi, ricordi condivisi e legami di lunga data. Proprio per questo sorprende che nel finale, quando emergono le verità più importanti, questa voce collettiva si faccia improvvisamente silenziosa.

Oh Du-sik, la protagonista femminile interpretata da Lee Ju-myoung, è l'altro grande incompiuto della serie. Il suo ingresso in scena ha una forza scenografica notevole, una donna che si rifiuta di riconoscere che sono cresciuti insieme, cosa che turba Baek-doo ancora più della serie di morti nel suo paese assopito e il personaggio promette una complessità che però non viene mai pienamente mantenuta. Lee Ju-myoung non è credibile nei panni di una detective sotto copertura decisa a dimostrare il proprio valore, destabilizzata dal senso di altruismo disinteressato di Baek-doo, poi col procedere degli episodi il personaggio tende a essere oscurato dall'ingombro luminoso del protagonista maschile, come se la sceneggiatura avesse investito tutto il suo affetto in un solo personaggio e non avesse avuto abbastanza energia emotiva per sostenere entrambi fino in fondo, o semplicemente è una attrice che deve ancora crescere molto, ho trovato la sua interpretazione appena sufficiente, sicuramente l'anello debole dell'intero cast.

Per Kim Baek-doo invece chapeau: Jang Dong-yoon costruisce qualcosa che è raro nel panorama del drama coreano — un personaggio che non conquista per nessuno degli attributi canonici (non ha una bellezza vistosa, non è ricco, non è geniale, non è potente) ma che conquista perché sembra una persona buona nel senso più semplice e radicale del termine, rare volte ho visto un ragazzo così autenticamente genuino e luminoso. La prima impressione che il personaggio genera è quella di un uomo lento, opaco, forse un po' spento, un ex talento che non ha realizzato le aspettative di nessuno e che si è adagiato su questa consapevolezza senza farne un dramma. Con il procedere degli episodi quella opacità si rivela come la crosta di qualcosa di più luminoso: dolcezza autentica, assenza totale di malizia, intelligenza emotiva di quelle che raramente si incontrano, innate abilità comunicative, a livello emotivo, è trasparente come un vetro. È assolutamente convincente sia come un'anima stanca e smarrita sia come un atleta intenso e concentrato, e questa capacità di abitare contemporaneamente la fragilità e la forza senza che l'una smentisca l'altra è la prova più precisa del talento di Jang Dong-yoon, che per questo ruolo ha trasformato non solo il proprio corpo ma l'intera gamma espressiva. Ed io che lo avevo sottostimato, conoscendolo nel drama : my man is cupid, mi sono dovuta ricredere per la splendida interpretazione, 8 ,5 per lui.

Il personaggio è anche l'incarnazione più riuscita del tema del titolo: un fiore che sboccia tardi, in un terreno che non sembra promettere molto, con una lentezza che chi lo osserva da fuori scambia per fallimento e che invece è semplicemente il suo tempo, il suo ritmo irriducibile (un po' come la ginestra tanto cara a Leopardi). Non esiste un'età giusta per trovare il proprio posto, dice la serie senza dirlo mai, e Baek-doo lo dice semplicemente esistendo sullo schermo con quella sua qualità di presenza calma e persistente. È probabilmente il miglior personaggio della serie, quello che rimane impresso più della trama, più del mistero, più dello sport, più di qualsiasi altra cosa. In una produzione che fatica a tenere insieme i propri fili, lui è il filo che regge.

Fiori nella sabbia è una serie piacevole, onesta, priva di cattiverie e di manipolazioni scadenti, costruita su un protagonista eccezionale che abita una storia soltanto parzialmente all'altezza di lui. Non merita i voti entusiasti che ho letto online, con toni da rivelazione, come sempre il riflesso di un affetto comprensibile per qualcosa che non fa del male, che scalda, che non manipola; e, in un panorama dove la manipolazione è tecnica corrente, quella assenza di tossicità viene scambiata per eccellenza. Non è eccellenza: è decenza narrativa!
La valutazione più onesta è un 7,7 che riconosce il calore, il personaggio, il gesto di raccontare una storia semplice con rispetto per chi la guarda, e insieme registra tutto ciò che la serie non è riuscita a diventare : il crime potente, il romance maturo, il villaggio come coro, la protagonista femminile davvero incisiva. Una buona serie, non una grande serie. Un protagonista straordinario dentro una narrazione che lo contiene a fatica.

The Road to Mortality

Lu Qianqiao is the last surviving war demon. His race was punished by the gods for disrespecting heaven's laws. Thus, the man is cursed to an existence deprived of taste, color, pain, and rest, and is subject to periodic spells of hot-blooded mania. He helps Xin Mei, a low-level cultivator from Tianyuan Sect, break a widow's curse, but forms a longer entanglement with her than he initially intended. She becomes invested in his cause and helps him face the agonizing five transformations he must undergo to break the war demon's curse.

Fate Chooses You is a xianxia with a surprisingly interesting premise: instead of seeking immortality, the hero's journey follows the road to mortality. Across many plot arcs, the narrative explores what it means to be human and how, in the process of seeking immortality, cultivators lose their humanity along the way. Because the ladder to heaven has been closed since the death of the Jianmu tree, the power level of even the most advanced cultivators in this story has not yet reached deity level. This makes the stakes in any battle higher; no outcome is a foregone conclusion simply because of skill level. Good battle tactics can even out an imbalance in cultivation levels.

While Lu Qianqiao and Xin Mei do fall deeply in love from a marriage of convenience, their romance does not drive the plot. In some ways, this is to be expected of a Ren Jialun drama! But both lead character stories are well written. Even though Xin Mei aids Lu Qianqiao on his journey, she also has her own path that often takes her on separate missions. I really enjoy her independence, agency, and free will. Every time she returns to his side, it is because she chooses to, and they protect each other from the hypocrisy and judgment of the cultivation sects. While this isn't that heavy on romance, I did enjoy Ren Jialun and Wang Herun's chemistry. This is my first Wang Herun drama—she is a very engaging and natural young actress.

While the narrative is strong through most of the drama, it doesn't finish as well as I would have liked. I expected this to be a journey to mortality, not perfection. Lu Qianqiao made a very consequential, life-changing sacrifice too casually, without any explanation or closure for Xin Mei. I was super angry on her behalf; that she wasn't asked or even told and he didn't seem to feel sad enough. Maybe that is on Ren Jialun's acting but that final decision is my main beef with the story - that he shortchanged her when it mattered. It felt like a betrayal to me. I was also expecting an epic final battle, but it turned into a walkover, leaving a sense of anticlimax. I know I am in the minority, but to me, the ending was profoundly sad and not deserved.

Still, this is a very solid drama—one that could have been a lot better had the storytelling held up into the finale. It is a recommended watch that I rate 7.5/10.

Era disto que eu precisava...

Ainda está tudo muito quente...

Ver isto no final deste mês foi um erro. Devia ter visto quando saiu ou então só daqui a 2 anos ou mais. This hit too close to home for me... Porém, o facto de me conseguir identificar com o personagem principal (Baekho) e a mãe dele pôr-me a chorar no último episódio porque consegui perceber perfeitamente o medo dela e identificar alguém na mesma situação (e que, infelizmente, sofreu o mesmo destino), foi... uma experiência que não conseguiria ter em mais drama nenhum. Não vejo outra nota senão esta.
O cast foi perfeito, finalmente vi mais um bocado daquilo que o Lee Dohyun é capaz de fazer e transmitir (depois do pouco que vi em Death’s Game), menção honrosa a Yoo Insoo (Alchemy of Souls forever) e a atuação de todos foi excecional (até dos mais novinhos). Deu muitas vibes de Hometown Cha Cha Cha (por ser mais rural e dar protagonismo também a personagens secundárias).

Props!: para Ra Miran, pela atuação incrível e espero bem que lhe tenham entregue a mensagem.

ITS A SCARY WORLD OUT THERE!!!

I feel like the real-life TaeJu made so many mistakes when suspecting people. First with Gi Beom, he didn’t learn his lesson and then he went ahead to wrongly suspect innocent Im Seok.

Cha SiYeong was a maniac, and I still don’t get why TaeJu was so lenient with him! Instead of chasing the real culprit, TaeJu chose him over the case. SiYeong was one of the people who gave the killer all that time and power to keep murdering.

I wish the real-life SiYeong had been punished for his atrocities. He was vile, inconsiderate, wicked, and downright disgusting! The fact that he did everything to impress his father except catch the real culprit shows just how weak he was. And the fact he never faced punishment only exposes how weak the South Korean system is.

The two police officers are bunch of vile people! They should have been punished, especially for the case of the little girl. I honestly hope none of them ever got to enjoy their lives after the truth came out.

The scarecrow actor nailed the role perfectly! I just wish they had shown us how he was caught, because I stayed till the end waiting for it. He’s proof you can’t trust friends or even brothers. The fact that he stood by and let his own brother die just to keep his secret says it all.

The story was truly heartbreaking, and every public official involved failed miserably. Im Seok spent 20 whole years in prison for a crime he knew nothing about and the fact that he was disabled made it even more tragic. I hope he gets to enjoy life after his release, though I honestly doubt it.

She was another silly one, I honestly don’t know what she was thinking, leaving to live with the Cha. I won’t even say much about her part, because no one should be that stupid.

what happens when justice system fails someone so completely?

i’ve lowkey been putting off making a in-depth review because i don’t think anyone will ever see it but if you are reading it i hope you enjoy.

The price of a confession is not just a murder/mystery. it’s a tragedy about institutional failure and the cost of it, what happens when systems meant to protect people fail so catastrophically that revenge becomes the only source of comfort.

The price of a confession does just that, it makes you sit in that discomfort, from a detective lying and withholding evidence to a girl forced to commit suicide, to a father overtook by grief and to a sister who lost everything because a predators parents had connections. Justice is denied, the perpetrator gets to live freely and the victim? she’s disregarded. That injustice has a domino effect, that same injustice finds another victim. A prosecutor recreates the same injustice he thinks he’s solving because he believes he’s upholding justice. He mirrors the same flawed system that failed to protect victims, and He proved moeuns world view, he alone demonstrated why someone like mo-eun would lose faith in the justice system.

The second thing i love about this show is its refuseal to flatten Mo-euns character, she is more than just a villain or a victim. Her revenge may not have been morally justified but emotionally it was understandable. To me, she exists in that contradiction. The show doesn’t endorse revenge but it makes you ask yourself, what would drive someone so over the edge that they would have to resort to this, what about their future? and then it clicks. To Mo-eun, a future without her loved ones isn’t a future she’s willing to live with. She was planning to join them, along with those who wronged and drove her family to their deaths. That was her plan from the beginning. But was the revenge worth it? The brilliance of this show is that it never resolves whether revenge feels good. In my opinion, yes it probably made mo-eun relieved because that was the only thing that was keeping her alive.

Ahn yoon-soo and Mo-euns relationship was such a beautiful sight though, from the very beginning they connected in a way that captivated me. It was the first time someone in the show saw mo-eun as a human being. Moeun was mesmerised by ahn the first time she saw her on tv pleading for her husbands murder and insisting it wasn’t her because Moeun also knew the feeling of that devastatation. does that make sense? It wasn’t until the last two episodes that Ahn also understood that. Their story was tragically beautiful in my opinion.

I felt bored from the first episode. I believe women are truly cunning from young age than what the media always tries to portrayed women. Women ain’t fool. In the start I thought they’ll going to say the female lead was fooled because she was stupid. Thankfully, they didn’t go in the path because I would dropped this. She was fooled because decided too and there is nothing wrong with that. She loved her ‘husband’. It’s not strong to trust people we loved, to love is to be alive. She was childish at first but that’s innocent. Later, she’s calm and express herself too, I love that.
