Good script, limited-budget, good cast of main roles, and pretty bad wig lacing
I just literally finished watching this, and boy, was it a good binge!(TLDR: It's just a bunch of praise of the actors lol)
(I do have some thoughts on the story and plot by the end of my review)
First of all, I watched this because of Zhu Li Lan. I was so taken by her acting in her other drama, Gemini, that my standard for short drama actors/actresses was her. The other actors were great, too, but her acting was the type of act where you know she's acting while still making you take her character seriously as a real person, with real emotions and real circumstances.
It makes me wonder a lot why she was not cast with a main role in mainstream dramas that often, and so far, I haven't seen her cast as THE female lead of a mainstream drama. I've seen her show more emotions than A LOT of mainstream actors ( I think you know more than I do)
My theory is that either (1) the market is too saturated with actors that have stronger backing, (2) her agency doesn't / can't let her, or(3) she chose not to be cast into big roles. Either way, it's a shame she's not more out there in the mainstream.
As for the ML actor, boy, was he a delight! After watching 3 of her dramas so far, the last 2 of Li Lan's MLs did not exude the same chemistry as he did with her in this drama. What I like the most are the small twitches/mannerisms he applied to his character. His cheek pulsating subtly when suppressing anger, his strategic small eye movements/changes to show a slight change of emotion, and he's pretty good at always looking grumpy (no one beats Cheng Lei in that regard for me lol). I'm planning to watch more of his dramas along with Li Lan's.
As for the SML, I admit I was conflicted about his acting. In the beginning, I only considered him as an actor, just another employee following the script as it was written. But then again, at the premise of the story, his character WAS acting. He was acting as the good son, the spoiled grandson, and a husband who could hardly say no to his wife because he was afraid of her and acts all loving when it's convenient.
The actor was portraying a character who puts on a show for everyone. A character WHO ACTS. (I hope I make sense)
His character, Shi An, grew up most of his life not being able to do what he wanted and be who he really is. He had to act like a tamed dog in front of anyone with a higher power/authority as an act of self-preservation. His actor was so good (maybe, I'm still in denial lol) at pretending to be someone pretending that I questioned his character's every move.
That, or maybe I'm just overestimating him đ . Regardless, his portrayal was good đ.
I liked the scene where he had had enough of his wife rubbing more salt on his emotional wound while he was mourning his mother at the ancestral hall. What he did is how I would expect someone to react when someone kicks you while you're down, literally and metaphorically.
Lord Xia/Dong Kui's actor portrayed his character as intended. No other comment besides great acting đ.
For Zhin Ji, she is too stiff for me. I hope more exposure would make her improve. Also, is it just me, or was her eye makeup too heavy on her? Are the eye products not lightweight, or were their eyelids not prepped properly? Just some thoughts I had whenever she's on screen.
Story-wise, the script was good for a short drama. The pacing is pretty good at the beginning, considering their budget limit. Qing Lan's "rise from the dead" moment was too fast for my liking. The climax felt rushed, which is pretty common in any budget range of dramas, and I'm not asking too much for short dramas to have a well-paced ending since mainstream dramas fail a lot in that regard. Short dramas falling short is not a surprise.
Also, I stopped being too critical about plot holes in dramas because my intention in watching them is to relax, not solve a quadratic formula-like problem. When I do, though, I do it with novels, which are the source materials of most Cdramas.
Speaking of plot holes, either because I'm a little sleep-deprived, or the real culprit of Princess Anhe's death was not fully revealed, nor was it explained how Qing Lan's father was proven innocent. He was declared innocent, but I don't understand how.
Yes, the post master was the one who served the princess's last meal, and it was confirmed that he did purchase the poison that killed her. That means, he did poison the princess, regardless of whether he was coerced or not.
If he did purchase it, which I still doubt, did he mean to use the poison on her? When they knew of the poison, did Lord Xia/Madam Lu put the poison without him knowing? Or, was the poison administered differently?
Considering he still tried to arrange everything, whether he survives or not, for the princess, her baby, and his children, it doesn't seem like he voluntarily poisoned the princess. The way he acted, he knew that even if he did nothing, the moment the princess knew the corruption in Ningzhou, it would have already put a death sentence on his family.
As for the bone examination that confirmed the postmaster's purchase of the poison, correlation doesn't always mean causation. Just because the poison he bought matched the poison that was found in the princess's bones doesn't mean it's the poison that killed her. It could be one of Xia/Lu's lackeys who used the same poison to frame him.
If this were explained in the drama, then it's on me for not paying attention. But if it's not and can only be inferred from the bits and pieces of information from the witnesses and/or the indirect confessions from Lord Xia/Madam Lu, I hope someone could enlighten me on this.
Overall, it was a good watch. I give an 8.5. The 1.5 deficit is because of the unsatisfactory "rise from the dead" moment, and Qing Lan being arrested and detained for 6 months, which I think made the drama component a little too much for me.

Unfortunate time to release
Love Beyond the Grave released at unfortunate time....right after Pursuit of Jade, but along side with Veil of Shadow despite to be fair different categories. The most unfortunately part PoJ and VoS has 2 things that lacked in LBtG, better writing of plot & characters. Tho' LBtG bring better war & fight scenes compare PoJ, more realistic....I won't bother to compare with VoS fight scenes because that different level fight cinematography. The biggest problem with LBtG was the writing, it made the story plot feels choppy and lacked characters development. The acting great, each everyone did awesome.....especially Miles Wei, I was worried about Arthur's stiff acting, but he actually did okay. At least now we know for sure that Reba's great in fantasy drama as bad@ss. The music is very.....jarring, sometimes not quite fitting. Was this review helpful to you?
Pluses and Minuses
On the whole--not too bad. While the story lacked emotional power, the plot was internally consistent and displayed some character development. In spite of being slow-moving, HIDDEN LOVE held my interest.BUTâ lots of problems...
The FL acted like an overly-protected child for 3/4 of the series â collecting stuffed animals, expressing herself in words of one syllable, using the cadence and syntax of a six-year-old, and getting by on her cuteness. Really, Chinese writers? Is that the model you want girls to emulate? This same actress played a real bada$$ in WHO RULES THE WORLD.
Zheyuan Chen, the male lead, had a more nuanced role and was, for the most part, the glue that held the series together. Props also go to Victor Ma, as the brother.
This series, like others of the same kind, give girls an entirely unrealistic picture of what real relationships are likeâand how theyâre likely to go. But I appreciated the depiction of a slow-moving relationship, and what a relationship like that âcouldâ beâif only they existed.

Required a flow chart...
...to really get the details of what was going on. And a spread sheet wouldâve come in handy too.The time travel elements were confusing, even for people like me who read a lot of a time travel novels. The trajectory of characters going backwards and forwards in time wasnât always clear.
Two characters were sharing bodies with other characters in at least three time periods. One character, with two different names but a single identity, was hopping back and forth between decades and even managed to get together with himself at one pointâso the two of them (one of them?) could figure out what to do. AAAaaarrgh!
The dubbed English actors all spoke in monotonous voices, and the acting seemed stiff, awkward, and mechanical. It was a noble attemptâwith a lot of problems. Five stars.

Anticlimatic
âThe show started with a gripping hook, but by the middle episodes, the momentum vanished. It fell into the classic trap of "filler" episodesâprotracted scenes of characters staring into the distance or repetitive flashbacks that didn't add new information. What could have been a tight, 12-episode thriller felt overextended and lethargic. The biggest frustration was the protagonist's decision-making. In an attempt to create "tension," the writers forced the characters to make bafflingly illogical choices that ignored their supposed expertise or established personalities. Itâs hard to stay invested in a high-stakes "climax" when the characters are essentially walking into traps that a toddler could see coming.
If youâre looking for something to have on in the background while, some visuals are "nice" to look at. But the "screaming acting" is not doing it for me.
I
f you want a story that respects your time and intelligence, Climax unfortunately falls flat.

Emotionally heavy, beautifully actedâbut not always easy to watch
Iâm honestly a bit conflicted with this drama. Itâs definitely interesting and meaningful, but at times I found myself skipping some scenes. What stood out the most is how emotionally heavy it is. This drama deals a lot with psychological themesâtrauma, war, emotional wounds, grief, and the long-term impact of painful experiences. It feels very intense and, at times, overwhelming. There are many scenes that are genuinely heartbreaking, and I found myself tearing up more than once.
The acting is really strong. Chen Zhe Yuan and Liang Jie did a great job building chemistry, but more than that, they portrayed emotional pain, trauma, and even depression in a very convincing way. Their expressionsâespecially their eyesâfelt so real that it was easy to feel what the characters were going through.
At the same time, I have to admit that this drama was not easy for me to watch. I usually like binge-watching, but this one took me much longer because I wasnât always emotionally ready to fully sit with what the characters were feeling. Itâs the kind of drama that requires emotional energy, not something light that you can just watch casually.
I also felt that some scenes were a bit too dramatic at timesâno offense, just my personal opinion. Still, the drama has its own balance of sadness and small moments of warmth or hope, depending on how you interpret it as a viewer.
Overall, I think this is a well-acted and meaningful drama, but it may not be for everyoneâespecially if youâre not in the mood for something emotionally intense.
Recommended for viewers who enjoy emotional, psychological, and trauma-focused dramas.
Best watched when youâre emotionally ready, not when youâre looking for something light or easy to binge.

Captivating storyline
This is the first 40-episode drama that finished so fastâa very captivating storyline. The plot grew and developed with each episode. There was suspense and action as well as passion, desire, and love... Both actors showed great chemistry. Dilraba executed this role outstandingly and portrayed her character well. Another actor who benefited on Dilraba's behalf. Chen Feiyu was overshadowed by the 2023 scandal and faced criticism for his poor acting (being too stiff, etc.)... but now, look at him. Dilraba is professional enough to bring the best of co-actors - she indeed is a remarkable actress, so blessed and down-to-earth that girl is.Was this review helpful to you?
A Lifetime of Obsession and Yearning
He Simu is a 400yo sovereign of the Spirit Realm, holding the ultimate power against all the other spirits for the past 300years, and is on vacation in the mortal realm when she chanced upon Duan Xu, an eccentric scholar of the court who was punished to lead the army at the border which was thought by other ministers to be a death sentence for him. But to everyoneâs surprise, he managed to excel in this military endeavour and went on to reclaim cities after cities that were previously conquered by the neighbouring kingdom, North Chong. He Simu, seeing the young general wielding the Breaking Delusion Sword forged by her aunt 300 years ago, immediately set her eyes on him, curious on why the sword had acknowledged a mortal as its master, especially when it also means that he could be her spell bearer whom could lend his five senses that she was deprived of as somebody who was born as a spirit right from the getgo, not just somebody who turned into a spirit upon death like the rest of the spirits in her realm. As she posed as the mortal He Xiaoxiao with an adopted brother Chen Ying whom she picked up along the way, she managed to get closer to the general and learnt that there was so much more to the general than what meets the eye. These two main characters are really unique, one a born spirit that had never been indulged by senses that we humans usually never notice - the sense of touch, taste, smell, sight (as in seeing colours) and hearing music. While the other was a human who had been left to survive on his own in sweat, blood and grit from a very young age despite coming from an aristocrat family revered in court, due to being kidnapped by the enemy state and turned into an assassin. One grew up filled with love and contentment only to meet with disaster upon her parentsâ demise, turning her into a stone-cold, disconnected and ruthless Spirit Lord, while the other grew up in pain and misery, only to find love and contentment when he met the arrogant and mindless Spirit Lord. They both felt alive when they met each other, although they could not hide from the fact that that it was indeed a forbidden relationship that could ruin the both of them.
What I liked about the characters here is both FL and ML never expected to be rescued by each other in their respective fights, but somehow when they were in the verge of perishing for real, the other half would always come through, though FL didnt need any saving even when she was at her lowest. But most of the time, they held on their own and fought their own battles, which took a considerable amount of years of being apart from each other. I am also glad they did not water down the FLâs OG powers just so the mortal ML with no supernatural neili could shine by coming to her rescue, like in most typical love stories.
I commend the CGI team that managed to make all the special effects look seamless without looking out of place or cartoonish. The fights are excellent, they had good choreograph in that part too. The makeup department was great, they actually managed to make the ML look messy during and after battles, like real messy with blood and grit splashed over the face instead of full on flawless foundation. đ«Ł
For those who complains that the last 10 episodes to be draggy, well, i guess the screenwriter cant help it if they were to follow the novel, cuz it was written that way by the original author. They did spend years apart from each other during Yan Keâs rebellion and the war with North Chong, although FL did share a more frequent sense-exchange with ML which contributed to his worsened health that the FL realized only too late.
Iâm grateful that the adaptation managed to adhere to the novelâs plot pretty much to the T, without much deviation. And I especially liked how they improvised the novelâs ending into two parts, which was pretty neat.
I have to say this show is packed with excellent music scores, especially those for the spirit realm, they sounded eerie and mysterious which is most fitting for the occasion. There are quite a number of tracks that I would add to my running playlist. The Lantern Guide song had similar ring to What Defines Humanity from Whispers of Fate, although I wondered if the composer was the same person, it turned out the former was by Yang Bingyin while the latter was by Zeng Zilin. Both songs were a feast to my ears with its unique lyrics and music.
All in all, for somebody who has read the novel before watching the adaptation, this is definitely one of the better ones out there that managed to satisfy the novelâs reader by being faithful to it.

unfortunately..NOT INTERESTING ENOUGH.
Plot: Xiao le and yi lan are childhood best friends. They share every aspect of their lives:issues, achievement, familiar problems.
Xiao le is trying to find his way in life without giving in with his father's expectations; yi lan instead knows what she wants to do. Her first love is playing cello just like her mother did. Unfortunately his father is not on her side.
We follow them as they navigate their problems through highschool and adult life.
Observations:
I liked the initial episodes of the drama. There is nothing groundbreaking here to watch but the atmosphere was nice and the characters were cute. I particularly liked the town/ school setting. It was a bit darker than usual school settings. It looked like they went to highschool in forks (twilight's)đ€Ł.
I think the main issue in this drama is that everything is surface level.
We never get into anything too deeply.
Music is a main focus of the drama or at least this should be the case.
I'm still not sure about what kind of school they attended because they were involved all in music on some level, but it looked like a regular highschool instead of a conservatory.
Music is never discussed or shown except for the reoccurring "sorry, I gotta go play cello".
The fact that everytime someone is singing or playing an instrument another track is playing in the background takes you out of the moment.
I get that the actor may not be able to play, but you can cut the camera away from their faces and let a real musician play.
Maybe it was a budget issue, but it didn't help with setting the right tone in certain scenes.
Building momentum was also a big issue. The drama cuts short important or emotional scenes. They cut right in the middle of a scene, they never linger too much to actually make you feel the tension and that has an impact on the romance as well.
I found their love cute but how they got together was frankly a mess.
They jump from being distant, to being cold, to being together, to feel at ease with each other in the blink of an eye.
The whole "senpai" moment was "meh". Yi Lang starts liking him over nothing, confesses her love, than changes her mind. Right after she rejects Xiao le but wants to keep him a friend. She then sees him for a millisecond with a girl and gets jealous and right after starts to look at Xiao le under a different light.
They kiss accidentally and basically get together.
It was a mess and I didn't enjoy it at all.
If she was so adamant in rejecting him first just show me how she comes to terms with seeing him as more than a friend. Let the jealousy build up a bit.
The moment they get caught kissing by their respective parents was weird.
The whole drama we are shown that Xiao le parents are absent from his life , but suddenly they are everywhere and play the role of "comic relief" with yi Lang parents? Totally out of character.
Aside the main couple, the drama focuses also on the love story between the sad ning Ning and Xiao le's best friend.
this love story makes no sense from the very beginning.
Ning Ning was mean for no reason.
Her life revolved around cell even before she dated that guy. She never had time even in highschool but she uses this as an excuse to be a bitch towards her boyfriend.
He did absolutely nothing wrong. Always by her side, secretly helping her , never being a burden and always showing a positive attitude.
She on the other hand kept everything inside, never talked to him about nothing, never found time for him. He was the one always making plans for their couple and she saw it as a nuisance.
To add insult to injury she is the one breaking up with him asking "what is your plan? You need a plan". Girl, he was the only one being pro active in this relationship. He deserved way better.
The third female friend is on and off on our radars. Poor girl she is a third wheel in this drama.
This drama is not bad but it is not super interesting either.
My favourite part was the male lead character and the overall friendship of the main couple.
Everything else is just there for the sake of it.

A Lovely Watch
To be honest I put off watching this for quite a while. I mean, I had tried watching the first episode after seeing multiple recommendations but I misunderstood it and so dropped it. Only after starting this review did I realise I had tried watching it before. This second time I fell completely in love with it. It is a beautiful story. Once they're adults the way they spend time together and the way to stay together through some struggles is beautiful. This story was well done. They did a fantastic job with it. I am deeply saddened that I've (almost) finished it. I love it so much that I don't want it to end, so I've decided to put it on hold until I'm less prone to crying over this. It is so beautiful!!!STORY
I'm used to watching more action-packed dramas. I usually only watch costume dramas and had somehow convinced myself that contemporary dramas were not for me. This changed my view point. This story is for those who love a contemporary romance. The characters love each other and the sets, families, friends all feel real.
ACTING
10/10
This is one of the best - if not the best - cases of acting I have ever seen. I watch a lot of dramas so I know the standard and this goes beyond. The Male Lead's actor Chen Zhe Yuan and the Female Lead's actor Zhao Lu Si did a fantastic job. They conveyed the emotion perfectly for every scene. They had brilliant chemistry on screen, too. The brother (Victor Ma) also did an amazing job. I wish he was in more dramas.

I wasn't sure I liked it at first but I've returned to rewatch many times
This isn't scintillating or cutesy or hot or overly dramatic. But I guess I liked that because I keep rewatching it. The story softly undulates around these two characters who seem to just crash into each other. I really appreciate that it doesn't lean into the coming out trope. It's just quietly telling the tale of two grown men falling in love and navigating obstacles. There are a few cringe acting moments but overall they did well. I enjoyed it.Was this review helpful to you?
Beautiful Funny Drama! Watch It!
âââââ A Belated Joy Worth Every MinuteYou Are My Fateful Love is the kind of drama that reminds you why you fell in love with the genre in the first place. This sweet, charming romance follows Ruan Yu and Xu Huaisong â two people who secretly carried a crush on each other through high school, only to reunite a decade later under the most unexpected circumstances. The result is pure magic.
What immediately stands out is the production quality. The cinematography is absolutely stunning â feels intentional and beautiful. The costumes are equally impressive, adding an elegance that perfectly complements the tone of the story.
The casting is spot-on. Miles Wei and Zheng Hehuizi have effortless chemistry, and the supporting cast holds their own with memorable performances that keep the story fresh. The writing strikes a wonderful balance â funny and light-hearted in the right moments, yet genuinely moving when it counts. The humor lands naturally without ever feeling forced.
What keeps the story engaging is its stream of unexpected twists and layered characters. Just when you think you know where things are headed, the drama finds another clever way to surprise you, all while maintaining a pace that never drags. This is not a show that overstays its welcome.
Whether youâre a long-time C-drama fan or just dipping your toes in, You Are My Fateful Love is a delightful, feel-good watch that delivers on every front. A beautiful story, beautifully told.

Lakorn rated as "feminist" but mostly just a lakorn!!
PLOT: Lin, the FL, is mistreated by her husband (chosen by her father, a macho and authoritarian patriarch). With the help of her brother Kasom, and the ML, Muen, who guides her towards an accounting job in his company, she escaped this hell. After her divorce, Muen courts her (with great difficulty because FL is reluctant after her failure). Furthermore, Muen's ex makes a comeback. Kasom falls in love with Kaew, the ML's cousin. But the patriarch doesn't accept it, finds "his" ideal daughter-in-law, and does everything to marry her off to Kasom. Kasom dies in an accident, and the patriarch became paraplegic.+++ The actors are convincing (except for the FL, who is pretty but always has a poker face).
+++ The story is fairly coherent.
+++ I really like the second romance (more than the main one because the FL annoys me).
### THE FLAWS OF LAKORNS: way too much melodrama!
- The abusive and contemptuous patriarch towards women
- The stubborn ex-husband & the obsessive ML ex
- The "ideal" fiancée willing to sell herself
### The FL who is in love, but doesn't want to get married, and maybe she does, and then ultimately doesn't
á(àČ çàČ á á(àČ çàČ á ) When it's supposed to be in favor of Women's Rights, you have to write consistent and intelligent heroines, not fickle ones á(àČ çàČ á
=> Interesting lakorn because of its actors, but so melodramatic!!

Well-depicted effects of artificial BF (on users/society)
Love seo in guk! Interesting concept. FL acted really well too! The series triggers relevant discussions on the technological, mental, ethical, societal effects of such a dating simulation. These are interesting & chaotic times to be alive in!--spoiler--
Didn't agree with story progression towards the end - of FL consulting artificial boyfriend on how to patch up with the real boyfriend, but I get it - they captured the essence well of the AI willing to help the user/make them happy by whatever means necessary.
They captured other facets well too - of impact of such a service on human life - like, FL's best friend gaming the system, the comic author getting immersed in it, etc.
There is of course unrealism too in the ML being persistent with the FL till she's ready to date - this is the bubble of dramas, rare in the real world.
--spoiler--
A short series that captured the essence of having an artificial BF well.

A Heavy Aftertaste
The drama leaves a heavy, heart-wrenching impressionâit is literally permeated with pain, which makes you genuinely worry about each of the main characters. The story of friendship and love is portrayed very touchingly, but with a bitter aftertaste, and many questions remain after watching it. Despite not having the most original premise, the execution is strong: the acting is powerful, and Tseng Jing Hua makes his character feel real and easy to understand. The adult characters make a particular impression, their actions are infuriating. The mother who abandoned her son and ran off into the fog with the jerk who beat them and racked up debts. The dejected old woman who tormented her own granddaughter her whole life. I wonât even mention the classmatesâthey deserved what they got in the end.
The main character could have taken a calmer path, but pain, resentment, and the loss of a loved one push him toward a different decision. Ultimately, this makes the story even more tragic and ambiguous, but thatâs exactly why itâs worth watching.
