Better than I expected but not without its flaws...

I started this because I was craving some Song Wei Long. Despite hearing good things I had low expectations. May-December dramas don't particularly appeal to me but I don't mind the concept. This one was exceptionally well done and well casted actually. It wasn't perfect but the chemistry between the leads had me hooked.

The main couple: I like Victoria Song's music more than her acting but she did pretty well here. It could be because this character is similar to her real personality that made He Fan Xing more believable? And I also think it had to do with her having such good chemistry with SWL. And SWL played his lovesick, cheeky, green flag character perfectly. All of his microexpressions and longing gazes were swoony and very convincing (currently fanning myself thinking of certain scenes lol). He portrayed every moment perfectly from when he was being playful, feeling desire or feeling sadness. Whenever his expressions would drop or darken when he was disappointed or hurt, I really felt for him. Every scene with him was top notch. Although it was stressful seeing him rejected constantly, I still understood where HFX was coming from. She could've handled the situation better but I actually appreciated how human and flawed her character was. She never denied it when Yuan Song called her a coward. And her fear was totally understandable. In these instances it's always the older woman who will be judged harshly. Yuan Song never seemed to take that into consideration because he didn't care what others think. Yet even if she didn't care what other people think too, she still cared about him and did not want to ruin his life or prospects by tying him down to her. On the other hand, I also understood Yuan Song's side. He knew he was committed and had his priorities straight. In terms of talent and professionalism in his career he was already leagues ahead of other people his age. He was also very independent in his personal life, had his own apartment, didn't want to rely on his parents etc...whereas HFX still lived with her parents and was babied by them most of the time. Overall, YS's frustration was very understandable. HFX didn't trust him enough to accept his love and she kept making choices for him which he was capable of himself. He also didn't want to be hidden away. Who does? The whole situation just wasn't fair to either of them.
Luckily their time together made up for the frustrating areas of this drama. These two were seriously cute and their chemistry was on fire! (If you're one of those impatient people who complain about slow-burn, no PDA cdramas, this one doesn't wait long to deliver. It was really refreshing to watch a drama where we start off with them getting together and then watch them work through their relationship, break-up and then find their way back to each other. There was something very raw and intoxicating about this storyline.)
It was nice to see that there were obvious reasons the two of them liked each other as well, besides them just being the leads and being attractive. HFX is young at heart and very inexperienced in love despite her age but her being naive about love I found more endearing than ridiculous somehow. It may be because she also has a long list of amiable qualities on top of being extremely beautiful. She is kind, generous, understanding, elegant, loyal, forgiving, always willing to help anyone, and outspoken/fiery when deserved. And finally she is a good boss, friend, daughter and girlfriend (when she allows herself to be one). So it's completely believable that YS would fall for her. Her biggest flaw...she is NOT good with necklaces lol...Okay, so she had a few more flaws than that but none of them made me hate her. I didn't like the lengths she went to to keep their relationship a secret. Every time she was in a jam and feared getting caught, she would make a terrible decision like pretending to be a maid or making Ye Lu Ming pretend to be her boyfriend because he looked like the better choice. That was just really poor judgement and inconsiderate. Which again proved how inexperienced and immature in dating she was in comparison to YS. That and she does lack emotional intelligence and awareness. Although she is highly aware of how her actions affect others and is timid when not wanting to hurt other people, she really isn't good at reading men's romantic feelings at all. She also falls for YS's ragebaiting time and time again lol But it's clear to the audience that he teases her so much because he wants her attention and finds her innocuous anger cute.
It's actually pretty believable that she's never dated and why she likes YS of all people. Someone as pretty and successful as her must have gotten offers from eligible men her whole life. The reason she never accepted any of them was because she genuinely never liked any of them. Yes, YS is handsome but HFX isn't shallow so good looks alone is not enough for her to commit her heart. She doesn't care about a man with money or power. She falls for YS because he is another rare bird in this world just like her so their connection made sense. He also isn't shallow and could have his pick of pretty girls. But YS and HFX both have similar hearts and personalities. The only issue between them was their ages.
Yuan Song radiates youth when he's being playful but mentally and romantically he is a lot more mature for someone his age. He clearly is the one with more experience in love because he's always coaching her through their relationship, which is funny to watch most of the time. He is even wise and gentle with his words when he rejects Cai Min Min in the beginning, but then stays her friend and continues to handle her gently/gives her good advice from a caring perspective. I also found that the leads are even similar in the way they handled the bad situations that came up. They are both passionate and emotional people but also graceful in their deliveries because of how considerate they both are. And as silly as they both could be at times, they were always mature when it mattered. And I appreciated that none of their conflicts were really that terrible. They didn't do anything to each other that created a moral conflict I couldn't get over like a big lie, betrayal or nasty breakup. I think that also goes back to them just being similar people. At their core they are both very sincere and innocent-minded so it's not in their nature to be spiteful or dishonest. They just worked really well together.
I thought that their break up was sad but a crucial part of the story (hence them "finding themselves" as the title suggests). It gave HFX the space and time she needed to realize that YS was the only person who could make her happy. It sounds crappy but I think she needed to try dating Ye Lu Ming to realize that as well. And Yuan Song needed the time to realize the position HFX was in when they were dating. When he finally did, he tried his best to earn her trust and show her that he wasn't a fair weather lover. I can't even be mad at him when he's trying to get her back from Ye Lu Ming because that was just giving YLM a taste of his own medicine. And I can't be mad at him either when she finally wants him back and he gives her a hard time. By that point, he was the one who had taken all the steps towards her in their relationship. It was her turn to close the distance and prove to him she's not going anywhere.

Ye Lu Ming: I have a love hate relationship for our 2ML. I hated that he was so scheming in the beginning but he was so funny that it made him more bearable somehow. And he really wasn't a terrible person. He was good to his niece and family. And as a friend he was good to HFX when he wasn't scheming. As far as 2MLs go, he was pretty mild and even likable most of the time.

He Can Yang & Cai Gua: As a brother and friend I found him adequate. I liked how protective and caring he was to his sister. Them being twins was definitely believable. And he was funny during all their family moments. But as a love interest he was insufferable to me. He was kind of a pretentious know-it-all, playboy turned hypocrite. In the beginning they set him up as smooth-talker and a heartbreaker but then we are suddenly supposed to believe that he's this innocent, tame guy by the end? I wasn't buying it. He winds up falling for a student with the same age gap his sister has with the ML. But their relationship just seemed shallow, had zero chemistry and gave me the ick. On her own, Cai Gua (Cai Min Min) was earnest, cute and loveable. I found her kind hearted overall but she was delusional and ridiculous in love. She's been spoiled her whole life so she's generally self-centered and irrational in most situations. Ye Lu Ming being her uncle was very believable because they were very similar and entertaining together. If the two of them weren't so funny/theatrical I probably wouldn't like either of their characters at all. Honestly, pairing Cai Gua with Can Yang was just weird and I found their dynamic awkward. And not because I'm being hypocritical and only accepting the age gap between the leads. But the relationship between the leads actually made sense. Yuan Song is mature for his age and values HFX for all of the right reasons and vice versa. There was really nothing in common between Can Yang and Cai Gua. It just seemed like he settled for her because she wore him down by acting shameless and babyish around him. She's definitely not mature for her age or his intellectual equal. Not to mention Cai Gua was in love with ML, and Can Yang's best friend, for the first half of the DRAMA and publicly confessed to him! It just seemed like them getting together was a last minute decision in an attempt to make the leads' relationship more okay? If that makes sense. The only thing I liked about their pairing was that he tried to teach her to value herself more like Yuan Song did as well. I would've preferred if their relationship didn't progress into romance but he became her mentor and coached her into being a more confident, independent person.

Other couples: Her friends relationships were just mildly interesting. I wanted the best for them and they both came out on top in their storylines so I was happy for them. Song Xue I liked a little more because she was smarter and more supportive to everyone around her. I've seen people say they wished Can Yang would've ended up with her but he's honestly not good enough for her.

Other characters: I LOVED her parents. They were funny and youthful themselves. You see how they raised their children with love and consideration rather than pressure. Which may have stunted both of them in maturity but also created too good hearted, unique kids. I was devasted when the father got sick in the end. But at least they showed him still well and functioning in the end even though we know his condition will progress in the future.
HFX's employees were all likable and cute. Cong Xiao irritated me at times but she's harmless and made the right decision in the end so all is forgiven. Just seeing sweet Chang Huan happy was all I needed there.

Final thoughts: I would definitely rewatch this if I need a pick me up! It was sweet, funny and thoroughly entertaining from start to finish. Now one of my top SWL dramas!

Sits at the top of the driveway

LET ME KEEP GOING. Okay, next up are Dao and Arthit, and I lowkey loved them. I thought their story was really good, so let's get into my review. I would give it an 8.5 out of 10. And I'm going to say what I liked, what I didn't, and then an episode overview.

Starting off strong was the start. Unlike our previous couple, their start was actually really good, and I feel like it actually set this show up perfectly. It showed all of the characters as well as all the relevant background characters, and it was very to the point, which is always nice to see.

OH MY GOD. The next thing I liked was THE GIRL WHOSE BF DIED. I fucking loved that. And you know, I should hate that; I really should, because it was kind of an irrelevant plot line to take away from our main couple, but they made me wanna fucking BAWL MY EYES OUT. I loved every second of them, and I will never get them out of my head ever. I need a sequel where it is just them; I don’t play. God, they make me so sad. But I love them.

Going back to our main couple, I also loved taking things slow. It didn't really feel awkward; it lowkey felt just right, and I enjoyed that a lot, y'all have no idea. Just great with everything, including the love, because neither of us were quite ready for a relationship just yet, and we really need to grow as people before we grow together.

THE MOM. Okay, so I hate on San Francisco later in my review, but the fact that she died on Christmas and he spent so long trying to talk to her, and she was just dead. I don't know if I will ever be okay, because what the fuck. That was just so sad, and they brought that to life really well, so good job to them again (at the cost of my sanity this time).

Another thing I liked was, once again, the friend groups; they were so lovely to see, oh my god. Johan and Arthits' relationship was such a gift, and I love it. They are pretty similar and also not, but I just really enjoyed them on screen together even if they were arguing. Also, Arthit and North being close was also really cute (peak Bas with the middle part because I don’t play about him).

Moving on to things I didn’t like. WHY WERE WE ON SCOOBY DOO AH MANHUNT FOR THE FIRST COUPLE OF EPISODES, YALL GONNA PISS ME OFF SILLY I SWEAR TO GOD.

SAN FRANCISCO, KEEP MY SECOND HOME OUT OF YOUR MOUTHHHHH. THERE IS NOWHERE IN SAN FRANCISCO THAT LOOKS LIKE THAT; THE ENTIRE CITY IS ON TOP OF ITSELF. DON'T PISS ME OFFFFFF.

Regarding our love story, I think we did a good job at the start, and then when he asked him to be his boyfriend, it kind of felt like a middle finger to all the progress we were making, so that was kind of irritating. I just wished they spaced that out better.

On more stuff I didn't like, episode 14. If you have seen this, you know what happens here, and if you haven't, well, spoiler time...like always. There is a scene in this where Arhit comes onto Dao, and then Dao pushes him off after Dao kisses his neck and all that. And while he did apologize and they work through that, that was ultimately a dislike for me, because it felt kind of unnecessary in a way; I don't know, like he didn't NEED to come on to him. Just something about BL shows: they love their sexual assault. And well, I do acknowledge that this happens a lot in real life, and in that aspect it makes this a good representation; it felt very out of character for Arthit and along with that the storyline.

And then finally one short note on stuff I didn’t like: the final episode. Something about this season and their final episodes was just so lackluster and had me really disappointed. I feel like they set the standards so high and just wrecked them, like please can we lock in I BEG. But yeah, that’s kind of it for this one.

Episode overview time. Episode 10: "A week episode because we were on a scooby doo ah manhunt." Episode 11: "EVERYONE FUCKING AMERICAN HOLY SHIT ALSO CALI WAS WAY TOO CLOSE TO HOME, I DIDN'T LIKE THAT, ONE BIT." Episode 14: "Arhit is a Saint Bernard lowkey." Episode 15: "ONEY MAKES PEOPLE PISSEDDDD, HENCE WHY ARTHIT JUST GOT FUCKING DROPPED, LIKE WHAT THE FUCK? Johan hating on Arthit but will jump at the opportunity to save him, I love that.” Episode 16: “Why is the grandma's name golden shower? R. Kelly ah grandma.” “I hate to not be the woker, but I wish they fucked again. BECAUSE OAT AND THOSE SEXY EYES CAN GET ITTTTTT.”

I don’t know if they were my favorite couple or if the final one is my favorite, but they are pretty close. Overall, I actually enjoyed this, and it was lowkey really well done, so do check it out when you have the chance. Okay bye!

A Thrilling Fight for Survival

I never expected the line, "Listen, Jung Ji An," to carry so much weight by the end of the drama. A Shop for Killers is the kind of thriller that hooks you from the first episode and never lets go.

The story wastes no time pulling you into the chaos. The story begins with Jung Ji An grieving the sudden death of her uncle. What should have been a quiet day of mourning quickly becomes the longest day of Jung Ji An's life. Jung Ji An suddenly finds herself hunted by professional killers and thrown into a dangerous world she never knew existed. From then on, the drama never slows down, delivering one intense action sequence after another. Paired with sharp fight choreography and the constant uncertainty of who can actually be trusted. Every new face could be a friend, or the next person trying to kill her, and that uncertainty keeps the tension high from beginning to end, making it nearly impossible to look away.

Ji An is also such a refreshing female lead. She starts off completely clueless about her uncle's secret life, yet she is never written as weak. Beneath her uncle's cold and distant personality, he had been preparing her for this day all along. As Ji An uncovers the truth behind his death and the dangerous life he led, you can see her growing stronger with every decision she makes. Watching her slowly realize that her tsundere uncle had secretly been preparing her for this exact situation makes every revelation hit even harder. The fact that all of this happens within a single day makes her character arc even more impressive.

Alongside Ji An's desperate fight to survive, you'll also find yourself rooting for her uncle. Before you know it, you're grieving alongside her, wishing he had lived long enough to protect her himself, while cheering for the people he left behind to keep her safe (I am rooting for Pasin!).

Kim Hye Jun had somehow flown under my radar in K-drama land, but she absolutely owns this role. She captures Ji An's fear, confusion, determination, and resilience so naturally that you can't help but experience every emotion alongside her. This is definitely the performance that made me take notice of her.

Last but not least, the ending seals the deal. Jung Ji Man's unexpected return is a brilliant cliffhanger that perfectly sets up a second season. Rather than wrapping everything up neatly, the drama leaves just enough unanswered questions to keep you invested and eagerly anticipating what's next. I, for one, can't wait for the next season.

A well-paced drama without a single plot-hole, written wonderfully. A 10/10 show.

may i just say this was the most wonderfully plotted and written drama of the year? i'm so serious, i expected little going into it because of the casting, but within the first two episodes itself i was hooked. within the first episode, i was hooked. by the time i watched the first six, i knew i was going to see through the rest. and it didn't fail me. the story was well-paced, they didn't leave space for a single plot hole. what would take dramas 40 episodes to sort through, this drama did swiftly every few episodes. arcs were completed with delicate concentration, and the general plot of the drama was proceeding every episode slowly too. every episode build up the layer for the final showdown, while working through the other small plots.

the plot-twists in this drama were so thrilling and so unbeliavably exciting.

now, the characters.

xiao wuyi was a very attractively interesting character from the get-go. i was intrigued by his character from the moment i saw him ruthlessly breaking through the crowd. everything this character did had a purpose. he didn't fail a single person in that entire kingdom purposefully. i think he's by far the most selfless male lead i've ever seen (to a certain extent). as he said in the first episode, he did everything ONLY for his kingdom. and even though opportunities arose every now and then for him to get greater power, he turned away from it. he only wanted to serve his country as the general he started off as. he was wonderful. i think his character was written so well. he loved xie jiayu so deeply, and that was something that pushed him too. i also saw hou minghao contributed a lot of ideas for this character to be well-versed. and it showed. and it was really good.

xie jiayu was a quirky, cute girl, naive and open at the beginning. i know a lot thought she was stupid and made stupid decisions at the start, but personally i felt that those were the beginning steps and trials for her character to be who she is later on. she is fierce and protective, and the moment she realized who she owed and who deserved her loyalty, her switch up was fire. she grew through the lessons and trials of her life, all starting from one death. the moment she loved - and even before she even liked xiao wuyi properly, she was protective in her own right. her passionate driven independent personality was so fresh, and her growth was wonderful to follow. her love was so inspiring. xie jiayu chose her own life, and lived her own life, and never gave up on herself or the ones she loved. aimi portrayed her beautifully.

my other favourite characters were qinglong, yan yue and yanxing. yuanji and runsheng. i loved witnessing their unmovable loyalty so much. li mao... took a while for me to be fine with actually, but he was fine by the end too. even though he was who he is, the eagle king was a very interesting antagonistic character. i liked him as well.

i cried a lot of times in some scenes, because there were so many small heartbreaking moments.

i would recommend everyone to watch this. despite the problematic casting, the romance in this drama was very age-appropriate. it was just cute. their relationship was mostly conveyed through their eyes and words.

xie jiayu and xiao wuyi - who says you're alone, may you share weal and woe.

i hope they walk meadows and flower fields, and they'll walk against anything life throws at them while holding hands, growing old together. because that's what they would deserve, more than anything!

Not special at all

This series - albeit its top-notch effects and acting - is over-rated for nothing. The story is not that intriguing nor special in any way and the romantic aspect is lacking in every aspect that is. I saw no real attachment between the two main heroes to be called romantic, effective or heart-wrenchingly moving! To be honest, I had to force myself to complete the drama simply because I hate starting something and not finishing it rather that being interested in the events. How could we be not bored when we see the heroes always wounded and in need of healing most of the scenes! Be real!

"Organic junk food" - Meaningful script and plot, just filmed in a slow motion and LOTS of soap

Watching this drama is like eating organic junk food, like eating organic blue corn tortilla chips instead of eating trashy cheap chips. It is junk, but it is not all bad for you. There are even some nutrients.

This drama is super cheesy soapy cliche BUT at least the characters are decent people, emotionally and otherwise functional people, honest with each other, communicate, work well as a team, the plot keeps moving forward, some script is masterfully deep and most script is NOT useless cheap dialogue. So... if you are in a mood for junk food, this could be ok

This drama is not a bad thing to watch. The plot and script are quite healthy except the FL promoting self-starving for the sake of "beauty".. Otherwise, the drama is NOT toxic.
There ARE meaningful problems addressed. The drama is not overly sexist. The leads communicate and work well as a team. There are meaningful deep dialogues and lines, they are just spread thin. The acting is not bad although there are lots of young actors in here. For a nice change, esp FL actress has a decent level of acting skillZ and that is great. It is just how it is filmed, rather simplified and slow, the script is "thin".
So the drama has potential, it is just how it is filmed is nothing spectacular though. It is not trashy, but it is not ... too memorable. Bc it lacks a certain depth of warmth and humor. This is not a 10 star masterpiece.

.Imo the script here has a lot of potential, bc - although the story is cliche as all stories eventually are the same - life does not have too much variations lol this is still a unique story.... and the plot, at its core, is meaningful. This is not some ridiculous Crazyville or Boreville town. It is just ... simple and a little bland.
I DO appreciate using the kdrama trick to liven the scenes with Nature, every scene has plants, flowers, Nature in it.

The drama addresses some deep and meaningful social issues i.e. therre are meaningful problems to be resolved - both ML and FL were overly loyal to really bad relatives and have lived all their life in suffering.

ML should not be catering anymore to his sister, bc he is just an ENABLER in a co-dependent relationship, making his sister more and more entitled and bitter and never healing from alcoholism. ML ought to help her break through that, not help her stay stuck.
FL was smart to realize what her mother is like, and distanced herself, but FL just ran away without resolving anything..
Both ML and FL's problem is that they shut themselves self down by the orders of their family members very close to them, i.e. ML and FL were abused under the name of love.

The drama is about them now reclaiming themselves. FL is ahead of ML in this process.

The drama is just filmed in a super slow motion and simplified, rather bland... Trying to avoid any contraversy, confusion, and pissing off the audience... . LIke... a low budget film for the masses. Well it is what it is, and perhaps this makes it more watchable by more audience esp western audience canNOT handle complexity and depth, so the dramas and movies tend to get "predigested" to not leave anyone confused. Also, bc of popularity of kdramas, they get produced in mass quantities so there is that "run of the mill" reality...

THE SIMPLICITY

Wow I paused this drama and as I was tryng to figure out where I left off..... I discovered that I watched ep 3 already - but the filming is so ... bland ... that I did not remember any of it, until I encountered the little bit of dialogue that I recognized bc I remembered it bc it IS meaningful. Esp FL has some really good lines, but not often enough :)

The drama is super slow, ie super simplified. The dialogue, the actions, the scenes... are just ... in slow motion simplified. The content is spread wide and thin. It is like 1 spoon of butter spread over one huge 2lb loaf of bread. There ARE some meaningful lines, but spread thin.

ML actor acting is rather simplified. FL actress gets to act a lot bc her script is better, she has the meaningful lines and more complexity and expressivity in her script - bc she has more acting skillZ. I just wish she were not a skinny plasticized barbie doll.

To see a drama with TONS of meaningful dialogue, It is Ok That's Love from 2014 is my recommended romcom, Or, KimChi Family from 2011

It is not cute, it just looks unnatural and dangerous, UNHEALTHY ARTIFICIAL
No wonder AI will replace actors and just use their face - but bc of plastic surgery, they cannot even move their facial muscles

Also this is SUPER RACIST, to pay huge money and effort to have African thick lips yet the world despises Africans as lesser. THIS IS HYPOCRITICAL RACISM. This is not specifically for kdramas, this is kinda global

Poorly Written, Yet Entertaining at First—Boring and Illogical by the End

The first thing I noticed—and what almost made me drop the drama halfway through Episode 1—was how poorly the dialogue is written. Many conversations feel very artificial. The storytelling is weak, with plot holes, illogical scene resolutions, and characters changing their behaviour or motivations far too quickly, often without any logical explanation.
Also, I enjoy shorter dramas, but the plot needs to suit the format. With only 28 episodes, there simply isn't enough time to properly develop the characters or establish the backstory this drama aspires to explore. As a result, many parts of the story are not actually shown but merely narrated by the characters. Instead of allowing the audience to experience events naturally, the drama relies too heavily on dialogue to explain the story, the characters' actions, and their motivations. Many characters' actions also lack logic and continuity.
As for the actors, I loved Peter Ho in "Duel on Mount Hua: Southern Emperor and Northern Beggar", but here his performance feels unconvincing. I suspect this is more the result of the weak script and direction than his acting ability. Many of the supporting cast also deliver rather weak performances.
The male lead is good enough, and while the female lead appears to be less experienced, I think she shows talent for someone so young. I only found out about her age after reading the other reviews. Otherwise, as a Western viewer, I honestly wouldn't have noticed the age difference. To me, she looks around 20, while he looks about 24.
I also read about the controversy surrounding her age, but I see it differently. The interactions between the two main leads are very innocent. There are no kisses or intimate scenes—only a few romantic lines and some hand-holding on a film set. It is about as innocent as it can be. I also don't see someone who is nearly 18 as being as young as some people make her out to be in this context. To me, she is old enough to make her own decisions. She also has parents who most likely supported her, and I highly doubt she was forced into this. If anything, she was probably determined to become an actress and wanted to advance her career as early as possible—which this drama certainly achieved, despite all the controversy.
I also don't believe this drama has any negative influence on teenage girls. In my opinion, what is far more harmful is much of today's Western entertainment. From television and live concerts to the way many celebrities—and sometimes even parents—present themselves, young girls are exposed to far more sexualised content from a much earlier age. Just walk down the street and look around. Teenagers today often look and dress very differently from how many of us did at the same age. By comparison, this drama is about as innocent as it can be. I found nothing vulgar about it. Instead, it portrays sweet, platonic interactions between two fully dressed actors on a set surrounded by dozens of crew members.
The story and the chemistry between the two main leads were surprisingly addictive during the first half of the drama. Unfortunately, the second half became rather boring and increasingly illogical.
It's the kind of drama you watch to kill time when there's nothing better to watch.

Great Cast, Weak Story

The lead actors were never the problem. Both gave good performances, and their chemistry was convincing. I know some people were bothered by the age gap between the leads, but that honestly didn't affect my enjoyment at all. They made the relationship believable.

The real issue was the writing and production. The story started off with potential but gradually lost its direction. I've been forcing myself to continue since around Episode 18, and by Episode 25 it became a struggle to stay interested. The pacing dragged, the plot became repetitive, and there just wasn't enough happening to keep me invested. Even with only a few episodes left, I don't think it's worth finishing—even if you're fast-forwarding.

It's disappointing because the cast did their part. They deserved a much better script and tighter storytelling.

How Road to Success Became One of My Favorite Dramas

At first, I didn't have any expectations for this drama. I only started watching it because of Xinxin, but OMG, I enjoyed it way more than I expected after episode 1. Episode 1 is always really important to me because if it doesn't hook me, I usually drop the drama. Luckily, this one kept me interested episode by episode.

The first thing I love about "Road to Success" is the PLOT. It's really unique these days, when so many dramas only focus on romance. This drama has almost everything: romance, youth, mystery, psychological elements, sports, school life, friendship, depression, family issues, bromance, and life lessons. There are even more elements that make it interesting. The plot twists are so unexpected that you'll never get bored, and it's so much fun trying to figure out who the mysterious person is along with the characters.

The second thing I love is the relationship between the "Baobaomen" (the 11 students), "Xiaolin Laoshi", and the "coach". Watching them slowly build trust and become like a family was one of my favorite parts. You get to see how much they sacrificed for football and how they were always there whenever someone needed help. I also love that the drama didn't only focus on the main leads. It gave some of the students their own backstories, making every character feel important. And here's a small spoiler—we barely get any romance between the main leads, and as someone who loves friendship-focused stories, I actually liked that even more.

Overall, Road to Success completely exceeded my expectations. I went into it expecting almost nothing, but it ended up becoming one of the most enjoyable dramas I've watched. It made me laugh, made me emotional, and kept me excited to watch the next episode every single time. If you're looking for a drama with an interesting story, lovable characters, meaningful friendships, emotional moments, and plenty of unexpected plot twists instead of just romance, I would definitely recommend giving Road to Success a chance.

I don't know why this is so underrated. Maybe it was released at the wrong time? I'm still hoping for a Season 2, but I wonder if it'll ever happen since it wasn't that popular. 🥲

Promising plot, weak script

I have to applaud the drama for taking a bold and controversial approach by incorporating BL into a reality show concept where a Korean boy group is formed through a survival competition. Most K-pop fans will probably recognize the inspiration behind this premise. As far as I know, this hasn’t really been done in K-BL before, which gives the series a unique edge.

Seeing Lee Woo Jin as one of the main characters felt like running into an old favorite. He was one of my top picks during his survival show days, so it was nice to see him again. His character here ended up being my favorite, as he was cute, charming, and effortlessly likable.

Unfortunately, the script doesn’t live up to its promising concept. My biggest issue is that one couple is constantly switching between Korean, Thai, and English. The production tries to make it feel natural, but it just isn’t. They should have stuck to one language that both characters could speak comfortably, as the constant language switching only made their conversations feel awkward. On top of that, the Thai character’s spoiled personality quickly became irritating, to the point where I always fast-forward his scenes.

Thankfully, the other couple made up for it. Despite their rocky beginning, they gradually won me over and became much more engaging. Their story, which started with falling in love during trainee days, then being separated after one of them debuted, and then reuniting for a merged boy group, was sweet. The relationship struggles they faced felt appropriate for their age and careers, but the emotional payoff lacked intensity, making many of the dramatic moments fall a bit flat.

Overall, it is a fairly average K-BL. It features a cast of visually appealing actors and an interesting premise, but the weak script prevents it from reaching its full potential. It had plenty of opportunities to stand out, yet in the end, it wasn’t particularly memorable.

NOT WORTH THE WATCH

Yeah for an S+ double platform drama this is pure shit from the butt. I feel sorry for Wang Churan and Zhang Linghe. The directing, cinematography, CGI, dialogue, and background music is so awful it's literally unbearable to watch. The acting and chemistry did not translate well on camera at all. I thought Linghe's acting got better but turns out it was Pursuit of Jade's director who made him look good. For a highly anticipated work, Overdo was a total let down that it's actually become a joke. Yijun should never direct again, too bad he's currently working on Chen Zheyuan and Wang Churan's next drama.. save your time and go watch something else. This is truly awful it's giving Chinese makjang meets low budget short drama with all the toxic male lead clichés. DROPPED!
