I have complicated feelings about this drama
Before I start this review, I want to start by saying that I did not finish the show. The reason why could possibly be a little controversial. As Light Beyond the Reed is about a woman's fight for justice to punish her rapist and the mental consequences of that incident, I'm not sure if I will be able to express my opinions appropiately. I may as well be treading into some dangerous territory talking about my possibly controversial opinions, because as far as I've watched - which isn't a lot of episodes - there's nothing inherently bad about Light Beyond the Reed (and English not being my first language makes it a little more scary). It's also important to not that it has been a pretty long time since I last watched this, so I don't even know myself if I remember all of my opinions. And well, the synopsis is simple, so I should be able to express my feelings fairly. I don't consider my opinions to be the truth. I am only sharing what I think of the first 5 episodes, honestly. My ratings of the story, acting/cast, music and my overall score are not a reflection of my opinions as I have not watched all of the episodes. But I would also feel bad if I gave it one star, and I have no clue what to rate it other than that, so these are my fake ratings that are actually non-existent in my head (except the rewatch value).I think the main reason why I decided to stop watching this drama after contemplating for some time is because I could just watch a documentary or movie about such a case. I know that sounds insensitive and wild saying that considering the topics it brings up. Documentaries tend to focus more on the facts and less on the emotional aspect (but that doesn't mean they can't be emotional) and I would say Light Beyond the Reed is very emotional. However, I think it's kind of different for this drama, because I feel like it only exists to bring awareness to SA. And for us to realise what reality we are living in, specifically in China. Because I wouldn't say the storyline and its characters is for entertainment, which is the purpose of most tv series. I don't think anyone who finishes this show will immediately start thinking they'll rewatch it, unless you're some masochistic person. The one thing you would have to look forward to is copious amounts of misery. The characters are not the focus of the show. You won't find any comfort in that. There are two types of them: the victim's supporters and the non-supporting people who like making ignorant comments (and also the victim herself of course). Other than the two main leads the rest of them make you feel pretty livid. If you would rather not watch a documentary and still want to have that emotional aspect of fictional stories then I think you would be better off watching a movie about this topic.
The acting carries this, so if you're in the middle of deciding whether to watch this, watch it for the acting or don't watch it at all is my opinion.

Great Romcom Chemistry Buried Under Too Much Second Couple Screen Time
A Romance of the Little Forest is a cute typical romantic comedy about a cold, dedicated professor and a bubbly fashion blogger with a secret Ph.D. whose paths cross again years after he unintentionally broke her heart.I think this drama deserves a slightly higher rating than what it's currently sitting at, and I'll tell you exactly why — and where it falls short.
The Leads
If you're not a fan of Esther Yu, this may not be the drama for you. But I like her, and she delivers an amazing, over-the-top, romcom-worthy performance here. Her character Yu Meiren is extremely chaotic, and every single frame she's in is enjoyable if that’s the vibe you’re looking for in a female lead. She's expressive, she's like a little ray of sunshine, and I thoroughly enjoyed her acting even though it's nothing extraordinary in terms of range in this particular drama. She's just perfectly cast for this role.
Vin Zhang as Zhuang Yu delivers a very believable performance of a cold, unapproachable, single-minded man determined to dedicate his life to science. That is, until Yu Meiren enters his life. If you want a male lead with a face card, who does everything for her when he finally comes to terms with his feelings, you are in the right place. He's still one of my favorite male leads in contemporary C-drama despite one writing issue I'll get to in a moment. And this was truly not the character’s fault.
The Romance
This drama is your typical tropey warm-bubbly-female meets cold-unapproachable-male opposites-attract setup. Don't expect anything new or original. However, it's charming, and the first twenty episodes are amazing. There are so many laugh-out-loud moments that you'll want to rewatch them immediately.
The one thing I wish the writers would have done differently is giving the lead couple more episodes together actually *being* in a relationship. It takes them literally thirty-four episodes to get together properly and officially. But that slow burn is also the part that keeps you watching, and we have to wait for that first real kiss until almost the very end. It does not disappoint, however. When it happens, it burns.
The Slump
Things slow down and take a typical C-drama turn somewhere around episode twenty when Zhuang Yu goes abroad to pursue his scientific and academic endeavors, leaving Yu Meiren behind with matters between them unresolved after pretty much leading her on. For the next three to four episodes, things are boring and slow between the lead couple and you just want to skip them because they’re depressing, so I did a lot of skipping. Once he returns and is back in the picture, things pick up again and we get more of the fun stuff.
Here's what bothered me about that stretch though — the situation between Zhuang Yu and Yu Meiren is up in the air, and he doesn't really try hard to reach out to her after he sees she blocked him on WeChat. He doesn't try to contact their mutual friends, her parents, or even email her. It's not like he was sent to a war zone with no reception. After you finish the drama and get to the final episode, it becomes a bit more clear why he did what he did. But as you're watching it unfold in the middle episodes, it's baffling because things between them were heating up and he just left without a word and didn't even attempt to explain himself. This type of behavior is why women will not take men back. This drama is a few years old, so I’m hoping that this is the last time I’m seen this trick writers attempt. It’s really becoming outdated.
Zhuang Yu does redeem himself at the end, but I think this was the only point where his character didn't read very well and I hated him thinking that if I were Yu Meiren, I would never take him back. That feels more like a writing problem than anything else of course — the writers couldn't think of a better way to create conflict. Or explain better or sooner why he didn’t try to contact her.
I also adored Yu Meiren's parents. Her mom definitely added plenty of laughs.
The Second Couple Problem
Now, the biggest flaw in this drama is Li Tiantian and Jin Xi — the second couple. They have equal, if not greater, screen time than the leads. At a certain point, you genuinely can't tell who the main couple is. Perhaps the producers wanted two main couples, but I'll be brutally honest here: while the story for the second couple is meaningful and very well written, and while Ding Guansen delivers great acting, I just didn't feel the chemistry between them. I think if the producers had cast somebody else, it maybe would have worked much better. I believe this is one of the main reasons this drama has a lower rating than most contemporary romcoms — the second couple takes up too much space without delivering the chemistry to justify it.
The entire drama could have been cut down to thirty episodes, if not fewer, and it wouldn't have suffered at all.
On a personal note: I’m noticing, though the writers in the past few years are starting to desert the second couple subplots altogether. Most dramas that do really well concentrate on a single couple and supporting characters have shorter scenes. People who are only now discovering some of these popular actors and watching their older works are probably baffled with the amount of screen time the supporting cast is getting in the older dramas.
Final Verdict
If you don't enjoy the second couple's chemistry and dynamics from the very beginning, just skip their story. Watch A Romance of the Little Forest for Vin Zhang and Esther Yu's super chemistry and some genuinely great laughs. The first twenty episodes are a blast, the romance pays off in the end, and the leads are more than enough to carry this drama — they just needed more room to breathe.

Loved it… until I didn’t
This drama isn’t for everyone, but it was for me (at least in the beginning). I genuinely enjoyed most of it. I get why people have issues with the ML, and they're VERY valid, but I still think the actor did a good job. The character himself is obviously not someone I’d ever tolerate in real life, but i guess I'm kinda toxic when it comes to dramas lol. The FL, however, was probably one of the highlights in this drama. I loved her!The plot isn’t super fast-paced, and I can see why some people might find it a bit boring, but it kept me interested. I especially liked how it showed both the past and present, how their relationship started while also showing them already divorced.
But then the ending happened…
I’m not even exaggerating when I say it completely ruined the drama for me. The Africa storyline already felt off and kind of ridiculous, but I tried to go along with it. Unfortunately, it only got worse and it got REALLY bad...
The last six episodes were honestly painful to watch. It felt so over-the-top and unnecessary. And the ending itself… I still can’t believe that’s what they went with. There was basically no proper closure, and the ML didn’t even feel like the same character anymore. I’m honestly so disappointed it’s hard to even put into words. I wish I had stopped earlier so I could’ve kept my good impression of the drama.
If you enjoy this drama, pleaseee stop watching around episode 30.

Who edited this show? The music is too much, not every scene needs music and more than half the time the music doesn’t even fit the scene it’s driving me insane!Why did they wait until episode 10 to finally get messy? Like this build up should have happened in episode 5!!
Why bring Boston back so early just to not use him for like 6 episodes?!
It feels like they rushed the show to make fans happy but I’d rather they took their time and did it properly.
This show is a mess but not in the way I was expecting but am I still watching it at this point… yes
Also side note gagaoolala really needs to work on the subtitles, almost every sentence was missing the ending of it. I just started filling in my own words..

Doing all the tropes to perfection
At ep 7 this feels like a classic already. It perfectly balances intrigue and mystery with romance and royalty.Both main leads are sympathetic (and gorgeous), the music is good, the sets and costumes are spectacular. But aside from all that, the main reason I'm counting down to each week's episodes is to watch the relationships develop.
Side characters are enjoyable and the drip feeding of backstories well paced.
The villain/s and families are delicious and add some balance with seriousness.
Not sure how I could be enjoying this more. Keeping fingers crossed for a good ending.

Short-length BL series (6 episodes) but very cute
PLOT: Hiro, an IT, is on the verge of burnout, squeezed dry by an abusive manager. He collapses in the street from exhaustion and is picked up by Kai (a very close childhood friend he hasn't seen in six years). Kai asks him to put him up for a while. Kai cooks for Hiro, gradually filling his life with joy, and confesses his love. Hiro is distraught, depressed, unable to make decisions, and the pressure at work intensifies.+++ Nomura Kota as the MC is charming and very talented. He's very young, but very promising. I'll definitely be following him from now on!
Kaneko Shunya is also excellent in this role of an ultra-stressed, manipulated, and exhausted employee.
+++ The series accurately portrays the working conditions with a toxic manager. It also shows how difficult it is to break free from this control.
+++ The direction is excellent, with good pacing, emotion, and beautiful visuals (actors & food).
+++ The OSTs are well-suited.
No flaws (except we would have liked a slightly more developed ending).
=> A very cute BL series, full of Nomura Kota's charm :)

PLOT: Hiro, technicien IT, est au bord du burn-out, pressuré comme 1 citron par 1 directeur abusif. Il tombe d'épuisement ds la rue, et est "ramassé" par Kai (ancien ami d'enfance très proche, perdu de vue depuis 6 ans). Celui-ci lui demande de l'héberger pr 1 moment. Kai cuisine pr Hiro, remplit peu à peu sa vie, et lui avoue son amour. Hiro est désemparé, dépressif, ne peut plus prendre de décision, et la pression au travail augmente.
+++ Nomura Kota as MC, craquant et très talentueux. Il est très jeune, mais très prometteur. Je vais le suivre désormais ! Kaneko Shunya est également excellent dans ce rôle de salarié ultra-stressé, manipulé, épuisé.
+++ La série décrit bien les conditions de travail avec un manager toxique. Elle montre aussi comment il est difficile de se défaire de cette emprise.
+++ La réalis° est excellente, avec du rythme, des émotions, et de belles images (de cuisine, notamment).
+++ Les OSTs sont bien adaptées.
No flaws (sauf qu'on aurait bien aimé une ending un peu plus dvlpée)

I will not get over this. Ever.
I'm writing this review seconds after final credits. My heart is still racing. This series is incredible. In the short while that China has been making use of the loophole they found to be able to produce uncensored, they have managed to put out several amazing series, but this one takes the crown.Everything is perfect to near perfect. It's setting in the old walled city in HK and the cinematographic opportunities this provided have been used magnificently. It looks gritty, dark but with a succinct 80's vibe. Some costume choices or props looked a bit off, but that happens to the best.
Story and story lines are clean, without loose threads or strange turns. The backstories make sense, and there is explicite room for an airy humorous note here and there. Sometimes subtle, sometimes not really but always fitting to the story.
The acting of all cast is great. From the main leads, the secondary leads up to the guest roles.. Perfection.
As is customary in BL, we find many tropes in this production. Heroic rescue (from a plant, no less), fate, confusion, unconscious kisses, etc. Most of these are acceptable I just found the unconscious kisses a bit meh. We don't kiss people that are not awake, dammit!
And while we are on the subject, the thing that really annoys me is the fact that the rooftop love scene is never mentioned again. Not in thought, not in flashbacks, not in conversation. It's like as soon as the sheets were cleaned, so was the memory. Like, whatt? Not only was this non-consensual, it was ignored. Bad move.
I loved the contrast between the main characters. One dorky in daily life but very forward in affection. The other a real life crime boss, but a shy and cute mess when it comes to love.
The development of the events and the relationship felt natural (if you can speak of natural in that kind of environment).
The last episode was really the climax we were building up to. The final kiss was truly epic. But there are loose ends that desperately need tying. The 2nd couple has no real closure. All they has was a hot encounter and some aggressive flirting. That's not ok.
What I loved most was the build-up, the visuals, the interactions between Liuyu and Chusan and the back stories. This really 'made' this drama for me.
Now hurry and get me an S2.

A lot of good stuff - studded with flaws
First of all, this drama sticks to its vibe/path from beginning to end. It's not like you get a certain atmosphere in the beginning, and the second part suddenly feels totally different. Except for it being a romance, it's also an investigative story of murder cases to be solved and justice be served, which was quite entertaining. Sadly though because of that the romance fell on the sidelines and never fully flourished - at least for me. Never truly felt it, even though they had some really sweet moments together.The story had its ups and downs. I appreciated the effort they put into telling about tea cultivation at the end of each episode. It still fascinates me how much care they put into that part of their culture, as I love tea in its various types and tastes, too.
As for the main theme: Women in charge and about all, being the head of the family. Yes, I liked that approach and the fact, that everything was the other way around. Men being displayed as potential husbands for the FL to choose was refreshing to see. Yet they dragged that "challenge" of them, passing tests and compete against each other to show their worth, a bit too long. At some point I almost lost interest since I couldn't see where this was going at all. Yet, the character development of the side cast was a predictable story of good people turning bad and bad people turning good. I got tired of the constant quarrels and intrigues between the sisters as well those husband candidates.
Though I don't want to talk much about the acting since it was decent from most of the cast, I must say that Gulnezer Bextiyar's (FL) performance stood out the most. Character writing is a different matter and I didn't like the FL's aloof and distant behaviour most of the time. Only in the last quarter of the drama she actually showed improvement while staying true to her imposing and dignified nature.
On the other side - and it pains me to say this - Hou MingHao's character writing (not his acting! which was good) somewhat felt all over the place and I could never fully get an understanding of his self. There were times when I really loved his personality, esp. when he was in his imperial magistrate's role. Other times he was woolly and obscure. Weirdly though (or let's say, thank god for that last trial), in the end his actions and decisions still worked for me. He had great fighting scenes (though only very few) and that last part of his story saved my rating quite a bit.
Regarding appearance this drama definitely has a unique style with its costumes, scenery and sets (rooms, gardens, manors, etc). Also , the background music has a memorable sound and accompanies the different situations quite well. Fun fact, I actually got reminded of the music from One Piece (you know those grand entrances of our heroes :p). But other times, the music in this sounded somewhat alienated, not fitting that period of time at all. And with alienated I do mean as if it was picked from some sci-fi movie.
I mentioned this before, but my biggest complain is the make up. Though being plain and simple, it still managed to disrupt my focus on the actors and their stories. Call me stupid or what, but it tarnished the acting a lot. I think, the FL's make up was the only one which didn't distract me.

Episode 10 felt like the calm before the storm.
A month has passed since Krit and Wayu separated, but neither of them has truly moved on.Wayu tries to return to a normal university life, and Mild remains faithfully by his side. Mild's confession is sincere and heartfelt, yet Wayu cannot accept it because his heart still belongs to Krit. Their scenes were painful to watch, not because of drama, but because they felt honest.
Meanwhile, Krit continues to keep his distance in order to protect Wayu and Singto from his father's influence. His loneliness is just as heartbreaking. Even when surrounded by people who support him, including Rose, he still chooses sacrifice over happiness.
What impressed me most in this episode was the contrast between the romance and the growing danger surrounding the trafficking investigation. The appearance of Ice becomes increasingly unsettling. From the moment he was introduced, something felt wrong about him, and Episode 10 only strengthens that suspicion.
The series has always balanced romance, crime, and family surprisingly well. While I am eager to see Krit and Wayu reunite, I am equally worried about what may happen to Wayu before that can happen.
And honestly, little Singto continues to steal every scene. Hearing him call Wayu "Toto" and Krit "Papa" reminds us what is truly at stake.
With only two episodes remaining, the story feels ready to explode.
A quieter episode emotionally, but one that successfully builds tension for what looks like a dramatic final stretch. ❤️

HOT GARBAGE
First of all since it carries Only Friends title, I was expecting it will be messy and traumatic kinda like the successor. And boy oh boy I'm disappointed. I even make myself watched until episode 10 just to give it a chance.Let's start with the storyline, the storyline is a hot mess, it's almost all over the place with no substance to it. We have a potential good storyline like Dean's background, they could dive into it and they didn't. Simply put, they have everything and nothing at the same time. So does the casting, with that many characters, there's no chemistry at all (well except for the pairing), in the previous series, we can see how the main characters group of friend really there and convincing, but this casts? Zero chemistry.
The characters dynamics is frigid, meaning that there's no flow in them. They interact almost like in sequence, outside of that, it's like nothing happens. All I can say is this series relies on the fixed couple stans, since they only interact intimately within their own pairing only, even the stage kiss was fake lol 🙄
Even NickBoston closure is a meh, because they just bringing Ohm, which is the fixed couple for Nick's actor to bring up the hype(?)
TopMew cameo is really out of their characters.
The only thing that good in this series is Mix's acting, he's doing it too good for an ass plot. Like how can you waste a talent like that lol
So to me, this is just fixed couple fans wet dream and of course their fandoms will love it.
In conclusion, it is hot garbage.

A Brilliant, One-of-a-Kind Watch
Absolutely Beautiful!!The tears this show pulled out of me weren’t just emotional; they were the kind that come from witnessing pure generosity and the joy of making others smile. Every moment felt intentional, driven by genuine effort, sincerity, and thoughtfulness. I found myself crying, laughing uncontrollably, and even feeling that spike of nervous anticipation whenever there was a risk of everything being exposed.
It’s the kind of show that stays with you, completely rewatchable and undeniably phenomenal. I loved every second of it, especially recognising and connecting with the entire cast. It brought such a refreshing, uplifting spirit that feels rare and needed.
I’d absolutely love a Season 2! More of this heartfelt, feel-good magic, please.

Def 10/10, but watch with caution!
Wow, this hit hard. I've finished all episodes and the special episode (ep11), and here is my review: I'm actually quite a sensitive person and cannot bare to watch gruesome dramas, which is why I wanted to drop this many times, yet I stayed for FortPeat. I'm gonna say, once you start watching this, watch it till the end. I must say that this must be one of the best psychological dramas Thailand has ever made. The acting is cherry on top, the chemistry of all characters are amazing and this drama is slightly more realistic than other ones. Even though I, personally, could never forgive Kelvin and would actually kill him, Vier's actions were realistic, as a person, especially a man, could never really hate/kill the person they truly love. So the plot is amazing, and everything, especially witg the different time periods was really well planned. Sure, it might have been confusing at first, but it felt like a journey, getting a piece of information every time like a puzzle piece until you got the whole picture. So even though I don't like psychological dramas, this is definitely on my top list! 10/10Btw, I never expected the lovey-dovey and cute actors FortPeat, who acted in Love in the air and Love Sea, to be in a psycho drama and act in dark roles, but... they were amazing! And Peat also got a major glow up, he looks wayy hotter in this series and is not only the "fragile, cute character".
Also, even though there was a disclaimer, such behaviour from Kelvin should not be normalised and romanticised, which is why I definitely do NOT recommend this for children, immature people and mentally unstable people.
