Atypical KDrama
Perhaps disproportionately rated high but this show was such a confusing enigma to me when I was watching it that it deserves a nod of respect, at this point. In a landscape where mediocrity was reigning over an unusually lackluster year of disappointing kdramas, Atypical Family was released with little fanfare. It wasn't a hyped drama. It didn't start trends or move viewers to rally behind its fantastical romance or revenge plot. I had no expectations for it. I didn't even like the first episode. The acting seemed meh, the plot seemed meh, the nonexisting romance felt meh, nothing about this drama was particularly interesting or outstanding. And yet, I kept going back to it, week after week. It was so bizarre. If you asked me what I loved about it, I wouldn't be able to come up with anything. But then, week after week, the show ended on an intriguing note that brought me back for more, then before I knew it...I cared! I cared about the characters, about their lives, about their ending.
That's just so bizarre until I was hooked. But then I was hooked on, like, episode 9! It took forever but the show had the longevity to bring you back each week until you got invested.
No one has so subtly managed to succeed so quietly, just from being unassuming. So I have no choice but to salute this show.
That said, there were definitely certain elements to this show that set it aside. It was in fact an unusual kdrama with elements that are either taboo in kdramas or challenge what is widely accepted as a natural part of the rom-com of SK. Perhaps that's why it went under the radar because I have noticed most seem to prefer watching the same repetitive stereotype with massive plot holes instead of trying something new. I kind of get the comforting familiarity of that but then you miss out on the unexpected interesting stories.
This show had an interesting female lead. She was experienced, scheming, and not cute. The male lead is a depressed blob who has no machismo or masculine charisma. The rest of the points...I don't remember! I watched this show so long ago and I should have reviewed it then but I was too confused then and now it's too late! But there were more stuff setting it apart!
The acting here was okay. I know some people didn't like the male lead. But I don't think it was the actor's fault. The main character is literally depressed. He's not gonna be your typical drama oppa, okay?! The whole point is that he drink to forget he is alive. And same goes for every other character. They have a lot of personal defects and those are intentionally highlighted in the show. So, the characters are intentionally irritable, distant, lethargic or moody.
What stood out from this was the production value. The sets are gorgeous, the lighting is immaculate. The music is so beautiful. The outfts are meticulously chosen to fit everyone's personality and their consistency game is off the charts because little changes in scenes are all part of the plot and one mistake would ruin that.
Rewatch: I still won't rewatch unless I was determined to pitch it to someone else.
Overall: I highly recommend this as it's a good show and it keeps it interesting in a respectable number of episodes. Some say they wanted more but experience has shown that Kdramas don't do well with MORE episode! Less is your way to go.

Easy to watch, light entertainment
So it is quite a while since I watched this, and my previous notes are a bit short. But this is easy to watch, quite sweet with a bit of charm and light humour.
The storytelling is occasionally a bit simplified, and this falls into the genre with "over-acting" - luckily not too much of it. So take this for what it is ;-)

Slow and beautiful
This is one of those dramas that has left me with a lasting impression. It is slow paced, lovely, sad, and has a very fitting soundtrack. The overall feel I would say is "sensual" and soft; from the lightning to the music and the looks and dialogue. The acting is good, especially both of the main leads, the cinematography is beautiful, and the locations are scenic and nice.
Brief synopsis as per my memory:
The female protagonist has an illness that makes her mum overly protective of her. On an outing from her house, she gets smitten by a male hairdresser's voice when he washed her hair. She seeks him out again, and although he is hesitant, they do start to form a bond and a relationship.
Warning:
If you like conclusive endings, this is not for you.
I saw in discussions for this series on Viki to watch it til the end of the credits, but Viki kept cutting me off, so I wasn't able to do that.

Overall well made, although a lot of familiar tropes
Overall this is a quite well made drama, and worth watching if you normally enjoy romantic dramas. It does have several familiar tropes though, so don't expect huge surprises or great amount of originality.Personally I liked both of the main leads (Zhang Han and Xu Lu) – especially him grew on me as the series progressed.
I also liked the 2nd ML (Hong Yao) and the supporting role played by Wang Xuan.
From my point of view I believe the story could have benefited if they skipped the subplot schemed up by Bai (Man Man), as that just was a bit too much for my liking.
Sadly, the lightning work and sound was occasionally a bit poor in some of the later episodes.
The soundtrack was a bit different, I would say, but quite pleasant to listen to.
This series fall into the line of C-dramas promoting (high-lighting) a specific topic or field; in this case Chinese fashion and culture. I don't mind it, but it can become a bit too much every now and then (too blatantly "promotional").
I don't regret watching this, but I can't really remember much from this show either now that some time has passed.

worth watching
the 2 leads have great chemistry & Betty is a wonderful actress. watched some of her earlier works. mark is also excellent.this show is never boring & tend to over watch 🤣🤣🤣🤣
really good
the show begins to be very exciting after she had gone through the darkest moment
it tells of how talents are suppressed at work & how talent can be discovered and make a competitive difference
in this aspect, the story has depict it very well
really good story line
Betty has always been an outstanding actress. her earlier works are equally good. I have not watched her for several years. it’s good to watch her again. she is really one of the best

I usually finish a drama within a a day or two of binge watching but this one took me around 2 weeks (too slow for my taste hence almost dropped it many times), but I'm glad that I didn't because what kept me around were the stories of the secondary characters which I genuinely enjoyed. Despite the difficulty in watching it, I have no regrets and I have enjoyed it a little bit although this isn't something that I would watch again but is somewhat memorable.
Overall, if you have limited time like me and have to go through dozens of other dramas in your list then I suggest that you skip this one otherwise if you have a lot of free time and nothing better to do then I think you should watch this drama and it should have a lasting effect on you.

A Recipe of Randomness
While I did find the series to be entertaining, there were a lot of things that were happening. You have got to keep count on how many arcs present and time skips there was---especially in the end.The main premise of the series was brilliant and unique! It is rare to see this type of genre played in the BL scene. However, the execution felt a bit lacking. Some scenes felt rushed, and some were too out of place, and some would be even better without them. We are watching a BL series, not an action series.
The whole ride felt like trying to sew pages of a manuscript that was blown by the wind. That was the main problem I had with the series, especially it only having 10 episodes in total. It would be understandable, or even better if it was a series with 20 or so episodes. Fitting it all in 10 does not really do justice to the plot.
In the visual FX aspect, they did okay. It is hard to have a higher budget on the animals, but given the circumstances, it was good but not great. On the other hand, the pairing of Ju and Sun was great! They had their chemistry, and their acting was on point. You love how quirky and Ju is, and the seriousness of Sun does not feel forced.
There are scenes I would love to see removed or changed, but I also understand why they were there in the first place.
Overall, a good series to watch when you're bored or when you have no more to watch.

Spice Up Love ♨️ For What It's Worth °7.4° °VG°
“Is this a wedding invitation or an invoice?” Her friend muses as she holds the paper up to the light. Hae has always felt like she was getting cheated. She still does. Son “Hae” Yeong is a girl who had to share her mother's love with all the stray kids her mother always had a habit of taking in. She's at her ex's wedding, now. She would look weak if she didn't show. Cro-chi? The slide show celebrates the pair's 1 year anniversary of being a couple… Um, Hae broke up with him a mere 6 MONTHS ago. There he is: Happy, carefree, adored, getting the company marriage benefits of cash, free vacation, & honeymoon suite. All she does is transfer her hard earned money to coworkers because they are having weddings & babies, and generally living more successfully than she. Hae HATES being cheated; her ex is a devil. She blows up the group photo - in her imagination. Pssshhh. She didn't like him anyway. She was just killing time.NGNL is a 2024 release that is rated 89 on AWiki. It is 1 season consisting of 12 65-minute episodes. It's got it all. Spice Up Our Love is a follow up 2-episode short that dives into one of her friend Bora's novels and examines the 2ndary couple's romance further. That's pretty cute. NGNL is a trope salad: Fake marriage, lost son of the chairman, enemies to lovers (× 2), and total validation. It's a fairytale. It's not serious. It's simply fun escapism. And fun, it is.
It seems to Hae that everyone is wedding obsessed, right now. She can't get near the company president because she's single. The owners won't let any temptation around their son. All the secretaries and high level execs are MEN. If she was married (AKA, NOT a threat to the family bloodline) she would already have been promoted. She begins to wish she was married. On a night when she's feeling desperate, she asks the 7-11 clerk to be her groom. Hae's goals are purely financial. She has no interest in messy emotions. It's about what's in it for her - Cash envelopes, company stipend and honeymoon time… she's gonna get what she has due.
The wonderful Shin Min Ah (Our Blues-8.5, Oh My Venus-7.4, Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha-8.4,Tomorrow with You-7, born in 1984) is our FL. She is competitive. She hated the attention that her mother gave to the constant masses of foster children that flowed through their home when she was growing up. She despises unfairness (especially when she's subjected to it) and she's not above cutting corners. She doesn't value love or intimacy. Her relationships have been mostly shallow. Her BFF (Nam Ja Yeon / Yeon Bo Ra, played by Han Ji Hyun of the Penthouse Series) writes spicy romance novels. Joo Min Kyung (One Spring Night-7.8, Something in the Rain-8.6, Green Mothers' Club) is Cha Hui Seong, Hae Yeong's other friend. Both of Hae's BFFs “did time” in her home when she was growing up. If her mom hadn't taken in foster kids, Hae would be completely and utterly alone. She fails to recognize that.
Kim Young Dae (Penthouse Series, born in 1995) is Kim Ji Uk. He's an orphan, he works at a convenience store (he needs a better job) and he's a perpetual do-gooder - a saint. His halo stays polished. He's gentle and conscientious. He's looking for a nice, modest, respectful, quiet girl to marry. That ain't Hae. He's been watching her for 6 years. She's had alot of interactions with MEN in that mini mart. She's bought alot of condoms. But ‘the head is the domain of knowledge and our heart is where love resides’, after all. He's actually more mature than she, despite the age diff.
Lee Sang Yi (Han RiverPolice-7.4, Youth of May, Bloodhounds, born in 1991) is the trust fund baby, Bok Gyu Hyun. Things are stiff at home, and he's doing his best to keep his parents happy and the company afloat. His mom loves Bora's novels. One day, the men in the family find out what's in /those novels/. Gyu Hyun decides he's going to destroy this author, this purveyor of smut. He's declared war on Yeon Bo Ra. I have become a fan of this actor. He has tremendous skill.
Lee Yoo Jin is Yeo HaJun, Gyu Hyun's secretary. I've seen him in Be Melodramatic-8.7 and Familiar Wife-8.5 - exceptional shows, both. His face is completely different now. It is much fuller. He looks good. Kim Hae Sook (Mr. Plankton, Under the Queen's Umbrella, Inspector Koo-8.4, Start-up-8, Hospital Playlist-9, Saimdang, Light’s Diary-8.5) makes an appearance as a grandmother. She's always fantastic. The screenwriter is Kim Hye Young who also gifted us with Her Private Life-8. Kim Jung Shik directed NGNL, Work Later, Drink Now, & So Not Worth it, among others.
Temporary physical satisfaction vs committed love is the theme. “My body and heart come together as a set,” our ML says to a h0rny and disappointed Hae. One of Hae's friends has been dating her boyfriend in a lackluster fashion for over 10 years. He mentions marriage and she realizes that she doesn't feel like marrying him. They decide to have an open relationship. Hae, not in the “know,” almost takes his head off one day when she sees him with another woman, which leads to an argument with her friend. (“You're a s!u+!” “/You're/ a prude!”) Life is complicated and it can be difficult to know the best course. We all chafe under too many rules. People have a habit of looking at short term gratification while ignoring long-term satisfaction. I don't know how many open relationships work out in the long-term, but I've heard lots of stories about them not working out. Jealousy plus feelings of betrayal and abandonment often take hold. The evidence is there that most of us crave an intimate relationship - one where we are the most important person in someone's life. Throwing that idea out for sex with multiple partners seems like a cheap exchange to me. If a person dates someone for years but doesn't want to marry, there simply isn't enough love there. There isn't a deep enough connection. I'm for cutting the cord and moving on. Why do people continue to date a person they will never commit to? Loneliness has to be the main reason. Casual sex, more often than not, ends up making a person feel lonelier and emptied out, though it's a slow process that may go unnoticed for a long time. As problematic as marriage can be, married people are less lonely and have more sex - more money, too. The high divorce rates are driven by 2nd and 3rd marriages. The majority of first marriages still don't end in divorce. I guess it comes down to whether sex actually means something or not. According to human history and most world religions it does. It seems to be a conjunction the emotional and physical at the very least, and in its highest form it is the union of the physical, emotional, intellectual, and spiritual. Cheapening it down to a mere physical act could be robbing ourselves. The show’s plot reinforces that concept, in the end.
Another theme is living free and not being enslaved by others’ expectations. “{My father} wanted me to live the same life that he had and I thought it was my duty as his son to honor him. Now that he's gone, and I followed his will to the letter, you know what I've come to find out? It's pointless. It was a huge waste of time… I don't feel accomplished in the least. If I had disappointed him a long time ago and lived how I wanted to live then I would have been much happier… don't hand over your reins to someone else,” we hear from another character. People are by nature controlling. While parents and elders have lived longer and have seen more, so their advice can be valuable, no one has the right to rule your life. Always evaluate your presuppositions and what is spurring you on. Make sure you are doing /some/ things that make YOU happy and fulfilled. Never stop improving. Never stop working on yourself.
Craft and art-wise, the show is competent. The theme song is kitschy but cute. Miracle, by HEMIAN, is very nice. There is plenty of levity and some genuine laughs. ‘You really have to love someone to do all of this,’ Hae muses as she reviews a wedding checklist online. In ep6 people with a multitude of convoluted cross sections and undercurrents sit down to a meal - it's big fun. The primary romance is nice, but the 2ndary couple's story might even be better. That's why they get their own follow-up special. There's no pain in this gain, and there's a fair amount of spice, which is nice!

A disappointing showing.
Started watching this because I had seen really pretty gifsets of the show. This is the second Liu Yuning (LYN) drama I've tried to watch - A Journey to Love was the first - but unfortunately, this one didn't take either. I was hesitant to start watching this to begin with, as I've never been fond of Zhao Lusi (ZLS)'s shows. This was no exception, which was a shame. The story starts very beautifully shot, and it's a brutal beginning for the characters which gets right into it. ZLS' character meets LYN's, and she winds up on his merchant ship. Lots of red flag relationship markers where she literally gets whipped on his watch; and where normally this sort of thing would garner a female character scars on her and whatnot, it was as if it had never happened immediately afterward. I mean, she literally gets whipped on her front; not to mention the whip may well could have caught her on the face. However, ZLS' character immediately then goes running through the streets and to a place she has simply been given the name of in the middle of the night in a port town they have just arrived in some days ago. How does she know where it is? Perhaps the person who gave her the name of the place also gave her very clear directions. This also happens after she has been working basically about 48 hours with no sleep, has been dragging a heavy cart laden with rocks for a whole day after that, and gotten whipped. The suspension of disbelief required iThe s astonishing.
(Let's also not mention how when ZLS' character first gets on the ship, she's told that there are many crew members who stay in a different part of the ship, but then the next day when her little brother Shrimpy goes to collect information about who's who on the ship, there is zero mention made of these other many crew members when he lists off the basically 4 characters on the lower deck all of whom we just met last night and informed us that there are supposedly many other lower deck members like the cook [whom we never see or hear mentioned by Shrimpy during his recon debrief].)
The romance develops... because the story says so, apparently, despite this being their beginning (where she effectively gets bullied and again, literally whipped on his watch). I don't actually know how this happens, where you would develop feelings for someone who decides to watch you get whipped on their ship because them's the rules. Anyhow. They kiss, and then shortly afterwards of that, they announce this to everyone in the crew, and everyone celebrates. It's like LYN's character just changes personalities suddenly, because that's the power of love, or ZLS' character, perhaps. Same with the rest of the remaining crew at this point in the story - everyone has gone from sullen and dour to :D.
The acting is fine. ZLS plays another similar version of the strong, stubborn female archetype I have seen her play in her other dramas like Love Like the Galaxy orThe Romance of Tiger and Rose. There is not much to report on this front for me. LYN is fine, as are the other main characters. The most interesting character was Chloe Xie's Cui Shijiu, whom I sincerely contemplated continuing watching to see what happens to her for. The actor who plays Zhang lang-jun is also fine, although I will note that his name + honorific in the show (Zhang-lang) literally makes the same sound as for the word 'cockroach'.
Sadly, the story is sorely lacking and displays the same 'scenes happen consecutively, I guess' sort of feeling that many of this calibre of Chinese dramas do. I don't know if this is bad editing or if it's the writing; most likely both. In one instance, the last episode ends, and then in the next episode, ZLS' character is kidnapped in some place in the desert. How did this happen? Because the script says so, I suppose. LYN's character starts off portrayed as someone who is moving chess pieces in a carefully-plotted plan, but ZLS' character is simply snatched out from under his nose without him even knowing. Apparently the personality change and becoming interested in someone is directly proportional to how much less smart he becomes. Okay then. There is also a storytelling mechanism of flashbacks in the middle of the next scene to explain something that happened before this scene, so that instead of A -> B -> C, you get A -> C -> B.
Pros: It is very pretty to look at. Again, I had initially been drawn to watch it because of how lovely the .gifs I had seen looked, and the styling is really quite something, notably for ZLS and LYN. However, this did not make up for the abysmal story/scriptwriting, and it definitively lost me when basically all the starter supporting cast were written off abruptly on one such 'this scene happens (and this is happening now even though I don't really see any well-written reason for it to be), I suppose'.
From the comments, it would appear that the ending and the way the story goes after this episode are really just more of the same lack of coherence and good reason, which is unsurprising. Overall, it is my sense that this drama suffers mainly from not knowing what it wants to be and really committing to it; but instead tries to weave too many things into a cohesive product, which it fails at doing, in my opinion. It would have been much better off if it had decided on one or two simple themes, but is instead overrun by the many haphazard aspects it tries to tie in. Additionally, I felt one of the big bads was quite obvious (from what I could tell from other reviews and comments) immediately following the abovementioned 'well, I guess this is happening' scene.
The music was adequate. I was not particularly taken with any particular track.
Rewatch value for me is incredibly low as I lost interest quite early on, within the first 5 to 10 episodes, and the main reason I made it through to the end of episode 18 was because I was mostly listening to it rather than watching while doing something else for much of the episodes. Rewatch value is rated at a 2 because I might one day decide to continue listening while doing something else to see what happens to Chloe Xie's character, although this is very unlikely.

Of Modern-Day Ninjas and Their Possible Existence
I finally finished House of Ninjas after a lot of cursing and chants of "Kill Kill Kill". As a whole, it is a great series that showcases the shadowy world of the enigmatic shinobi, revolving around the fictional descendants of Hattori Hanzo, the famed shinobi who was a loyal retainer of Tokugawa Ieyasu. The series captured my attention because there have been very few movies or shows that elaborately depict modern-day ninjas and do it in a more believable or conceivable fashion. I give credit to the writers of the show for creating such a rich world of ninjas filled with colorful and relatable characters (except one). Kaku Kento is an absolute badass as Haru, the skilled but reluctant shinobi who refuses to kill and rebels at the idea of complete subjugation from the government that employs them. Kora Kengo is equally brilliant as his conflicted older brother. And of course, there's their beastly dad played by Eguchi Yosuke who is known for playing Saito Hajime in the Rurouni Kenshin movies and Ichigo's dad, Kurosaki Isshin, in the Bleach live action. But I think my favorite is definitely the grandma even though I found Riku adorable. In fact, I loved most of the characters, including the villains like Yamada Takayuki, because they are so good in this. I loved everyone except Ito Karen (I don't want to search for the actress' name) whose damsel-in-distress and nosy reporter character just bugged me from the get-go. My god, I have never wanted a character to die so bad! 🤣 All she ever does is get herself into trouble and have Haru rescue her. Her pursuit of the truth gets her in deep shit and all because she wants to know everything. Not everything that is kept in the shadows should be brought to light. There's a reason why it is being kept secret and most of the time it's because it will only cause more harm than good to reveal it. She is basically like a cat whose curiosity almost gets her killed. She is such a waste of space. I am hoping they will leave her out in the succeeding seasons and introduce a different love interest for Haru. As for the fight scenes, they are well choreographed and executed, especially the boss fight between the brothers. That was so cool! Kudos to the stunt team and action choreographers for crafting some of the coolest ninja action I've seen in years. Looking forward to the next season, but please, no more Karens. Was this review helpful to you?

A totally new storyline !!
I have never watched this kind of short drama before and was kinda hesitating before watching and was also doubtful after looking at the picture..😆😆😆But then well i said let's give it a try.. so started watching this and well.
It was a really good one. Not the usual sweet fluffy romance or the "i loved him once but now know my worth and leaves the male , then male pampers and they get back together" and not the any other old plot.
But was really a new one.
The female was afraid to love someone but then got the male in her life from her high school.. time and after years of pursuit they got together and also married later. But the present day she, even after his love for her, he cheated on her and she knew it from the day her mother died.
And then she decided to take part in her mother's research to..erase all her memories and start a new life , but she had to be preserved for 50 years.. later the male got to know that the female already knew that he cheated and regretted , But of no use °!!

Good story with a slight comedy
The drama was very interesting, making me wanted to watch it until the end. There’s no boring part, the acting of main leads are stunning. But, I have difficulty to differentiate the evil characters as they look similar. The story executed perfectly and I love how the ML and FL are both smart in facing any hardship. I wish the ending explain more about their happy life and kids after the conflict ended. Was this review helpful to you?
My Favorite Drama 2024
The female lead’s acting is outstanding, bringing her character to life in a way that feels so real and relatable. She perfectly captures the emotional depth of her role, making it easy to connect with her journey and feel invested in her story. The chemistry between Shen Yue and Lin Yi really stands out. Shen Yue's lively, comedic portrayal of Gu Yi contrasts nicely with Lin Yi's reserved character, Liang Daiwen, creating an engaging dynamic. The drama's exploration of the daily struggles of young generation. I'm a big fan of Shen Yue and that's the reason I was excited to watch Smile Code. Please don't stop watching Smile Code too early because If you leave early you will miss some absolutely amazing moments and storylines! I rewatching almost 10x times now.. I can't move on..Their love story is impossible to describe. They are sooo adorable and cute. If you haven't watched it yet, don't hesitate and go watch it. I had butterflies in my stomach every time I saw each of their episodes. Unquestionably, this is a must-see drama of the year. Linyi also ask to watch again this year, and ask we to dreaming to chase a star together. Lets go watch again the best drama ever!!! I also want Shen yue to act drama like Autumn in my heart.. Because her crying scene it so hurting and so painful to watch. 😭😭😭😭😭Was this review helpful to you?

Something beautiful, watchable and amazing
This story is one of the stories that made my 2024 better, i love how this was narrated and given, light plot, heavy romance and definitely the bonding was toptierOhmleng supremely
They easily did everything like it was real, the comfortability between the lead roles could keep you at the edge of your seat, they were more like a married couple than actors,
Leng's Acting
Despite being bashed by the ex fandom, Leng shut many people with his awesome improvement in acting, dude always showed something new every episode, he was so loveable and could capture hearts in seconds
The Music
Oohh don't get start, Tui's From Now On still echos in my ears, whoever chose him for this really deserves a higher salary, dude gave the series a whole new meaning with his voice, ohm and Leng's songs were also like adding butter to the bread, i love the perfection inserted in the music selection of the series
The Supporting Actors
They all felt like they were leads, every person that appeared on the screen left a perfection mark
I can rewatch this for a million times.....Too Good
