I finished watching and I must say.. WOW.
It´s a really good series, you have to watch it. It has action and everything, and i love dramas that are in ancient times. The are good actors, and the plot is just awesome. They have a good friendship but they are both in different groups so it can´t be. But they are together for as long as possible.
I really loved the series so you should watch it, it´s a really storyand my fav episode is episode 6, I mean just. wow! I loved that episode so much. the last episode was a little confusing for me (how it ended) but I really hope there will be a sequel so I know what will happen because It´s a really good series.
I recommend that you at least begin watching it and see if it´s to your liking :)

STORY: Besides what's in the description above, I'll add that this is a drama that takes place in China during an "anti-Japanese" war with two factions fighting against one another. There is a lot of covert plots, espionage, secret service, and all that great stuff. This series was really gripping. I was glued for a 15 episode binge.

Total run time: approx 5h 23m. Each episode is around 18-22 minutes long but have 5 minutes of credits and in some cases another minute of what happened last episode. Take that all out and the run time is a lot shorter. Easy to binge in one setting with the fast-forward button.

ACTING/CAST: Same basic cast that is in Love Is More Than a Word. So it was nice to see them in different parts. They all do a great job. I totally loved Lu Zhou in both dramas and in this one he's a gun-wielding bad-ass. Also, the villian, Gu Han, from The Fairy Fox makes a cameo in one episode; see if you can spot him.

MUSIC: It was great actually. It made this show seem like a sweeping epic.

REWATCH VALUE: Of course! This is a great show with so much intrigue I need to watch it again.

OVERALL: Amazing production value. Shot in full 1080p! The sets and costume design are spectacular. It's a gorgeous production. I wish each episode was longer: credits just chew up so much screen time. For those looking for the BL aspect, there isn't anything overt but maybe something will happen in season 2.

First thing to understand: there's an "official" edited version where they have cut out anything remotely BL--so any dialogue that had any BL feels, any scenes where they are too close/intimate--that's been cut. SO, PLEASE, WATCH THE UNEDITED VERSION.
The unedited version gave us a lot to show their love, especially Zhao Yao Hua towards Liu Yu Sheng. Again, they never do anything explicit due to censorship, but I guarantee you that this series will give you a lot to be happy and smiling about. Also, the ending is good too. So, while watching the series, don't expect anything explicit, but do expect many dialogue that will tug at your heart as well as many actions done by Yao Hua to Yu Sheng that will grip your heart. :')

Also, the secondary characters (the other couple, pretty much) also get a couple chances to shine, so that was adorable. They don't get anything as intense as Yao Hua & Yu Sheng, but it was still cute.

look through the politics and you will find an endearing short Chinese GL drama series

enjoy this good story attractive actors, costume, background but the modern political prejudices are hardly well hidden [Kuomintang one-sidedly portrayed as the inhumane thugs] and it is fairly obvious why Chinese censorship did not take a heavy hand with this despite the same sex undertones (some parts even contain virtual lectures:do not let the start put you off):maybe in 2017 they thought with the propaganda it is worth risking effect of the heavy friendship! yes、 end very telescoped (but you could say this about the whole drama) but it worked〜 look through the politics and use your imagination (though with Zhou Yao Huayou's character played by Yan Zi Dong maybe do not need much imagination) and this is endearing same sex drama〜

A Ture BL. Rare gem in the world of censored C-BLs.

(WARNING: The version available in YouTube and many other platforms are the heavily censored version of the drama which cuts out all the BL elements. So make sure to WATCH THE UNCUT VERSION. Just google it, you'll find it.)
LOVED IT! The same cast of the MLs did another drama LOVE IS MORE THAN A WORD, and that drama was lovely too. Both the dramas have the same director and I'm so thankful for the director and producer for producing these TRUE BL GEMS. By true BL, I mean, the drama wasn't changed into bromance. Most of the C-BLs out there make the drama into bromance/soul-mates, and BL elements are no more than some love filled glances and utmost care and sincerity towards each other. But here, the dialogues, and some scenes, although without physical intimacy, are openly delivered to make it a true BL.
The plot was set in the anti-Japanese war era. The plot is good! I won't spoil it, but it was a solid plot. Didn't really find loopholes.
The cast was cute. I've liked them ever since I watched LIMTAW. But here, I feel like the acting was better.
Overall, ITS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Just... wow

I rarely write reviews but this drama was just too good not to give it the honour it deserves.

Absolutely one of the best period bromance dramas I've watched to date. I use the term 'bromance' loosely because whether you watch the cut or uncut version you still are left with a strong sense of unity, loyalty and love. It's filled with action, tension and humour which hits in all the right places and the right time.

The acting was superb and I'm itching to find more dramas with all four leads.

I put this right up there with the likes of The Untamed and Word of Honor. I know censorship is incredibly frustrating for a lot of people, including myself but this... this drama is stunning, a true work of art.

Don't miss out on in just because the don't kiss.

i like how easy this series is to binge. i'm big on sitting down and watching a show all the way through, so this series was really refreshing.

i like the historic timeline! i think it fits really well, and although i'm not very knowledgeable on the topics brought up, everything was fairly easy to understand. the acting was also fantastic. i never got bored of the story because i couldn't get into a scene. all of the actors are very talented and i'd love to see more from them, especially a season two. the series ends with a lot more questions than answers

i think overall, the storyline at the end was a little rushed. the last two episodes probably have the most going on on them. i wish it were more spread out, rather than all of these characters suddenly getting detained. the plot is quite unrealistic as well, so it can be a little difficult to relate, but i think that makes so unique.

i really liked the second "couple" and really wished they got more screen time. i think their chemistry was really cute; especially the target practice scene. i wish we got to see more of them, but i understand why we didn't.

i liked this series! i would definitely recommend for a quick watch. i'd love to see another season and get all of these questions answered! looking forward to it.
