What makes this drama different from other episodic type of drama is that every episode has its own unique theme, and not just an episode dedicated for fleshing out other supporting characters. My favorite is the episode about "mask" that every person put mask because of different circumstances, which it won't hurt if we remove a bit of that mask to have a better understanding of each other. Also in my years of watching Japanese dramas this might be the first time that a medical drama is about radiographers, people whom most of us, taken for granted, those who work behind the scenes taking your x-ray. I would never think much of those people if not for this drama. With all that said, this drama is a breath of fresh air among the very long list of job oriented Jdramas.

The story is also intriguing. It's about a radiographer who has a medical license. He could become a radiologist if he wants, but he has his reasons, which I would not discuss because that is in a more spoiler territory. I have no knowledge when it comes to medical terms, so I'll take whatever this drama has said as facts, which is why I didn't have problems in terms of it being logical. Every episode is basically Iori insisting to have 1 more scan then doctors will disagree because of pride but in the end Iori will get what he wants and will discover underlying disease that didn't get caught during the first scan. The drama will teach you that it's not about the position, and just like what Iori said "As long as it is within my capability, I won't give up".

Romance is like your typical Jdrama, so if you're looking for a kdrama-esque romance you would be disappointed. It is Radiation House after all, and not Steamy House or Radiation "Doctor's love affair" House. Even with minimal romance, the main characters have great chemistry. Igarashi Iori played by Kubota Masataka, the smartest fool ever, a genius who has a knack for knowing the truth by reading MRI images, which ironically a person who can't convey his own feelings. And Amakasu An, played by Honda Tsubasa, a tsudere type of character, whom I still don't' know if she still can't recall him, or just being cold until the end. Honda has that reputation of a ham actress, but in my opinion she did well here, aside from some dramatic scenes where she could have done more. Kubota's portrayal on the other hand is spot on, from gestures to expression, he nailed it. Both of them had brief moments on screen, but it's always fun seeing their interaction together. Iori's hilarious reaction towards An is the highlight in every episode. Aside from the cast there's also fun side characters, which have their own charms, but sadly they became a bit irrelevant in later episodes. The music is just okay but forgettable. The camera work though is dynamic, which makes such scenes engaging.

The way the drama ended hints there will be a special or a season 2, but it is directed really well that you won't have problem if it won't have, they conveyed its theme really well in my opinion.

Coming off of Unnatural, I was unbelievably excited for a medical mystery drama with Kubota Masataka in it. And though I can't say I'm a huge fan of romance plots, the one in Radiation House isn't the worst I've seen, and I like that they address the fact that he's unintentionally making her feel bad about her own accomplishments. The camerawork is gorgeous, noticeably so. I'm not one to pay much attention to OST but hey, you can't go wrong with an ED sung by Man With A Mission.

There's a problem with the plot, though. That is, I don't think this drama ought to have been this long. I think the way that they bookend every episode with narration that has a meaning that changes before and after the episode, but the content of the episodes in and of themselves just doesn't seem quite... enough? Conflict is minimal and easily solved, and it really starts to grate after eleven entire episodes. The show settles into this formula of Igarashi sees something -> asks for more scans -> they don't give it to him at first but then either they bend the rules or someone has a change of heart -> Igarashi was right. Also, along the way one of the supporting case has a day in the limelight. It's just a bit trite and cheaply feel-good, you know? So I suppose if you're looking for a pretty time waster with nice actors but minimal real plot investment, this is for you?

I love the storylines and the bada**ness of Igarashi but his aloof humbleness is what makes his character so freaking awesome. Igarashi is so sweet, innocent and almost childlike about An-chan I love it. That one Sempai Goro is such a complete moron but he makes it pretty funny, oh... the head doctor Dr. Yasutomi is a super prick who only cares about himself. I love the fact that tech Hirono doesn't even realize that she's in love with Igarashi like your heart beats fast or when you see them you just stare, yes... you're in love with that person. All in all its a good drama to watch.

This is the first time I've watched a simulcast with Japan and it was amazing! I believe the story was impeccably written, the storyline and plot twists were very interesting, and the cast was perfect! Kubota Masataka was the right choice for Igarashi Iori and I think Tsubasa Honda was the right choice for Amakasu An as well, though at the beginning I didn't really like her character (even though I like Tsubasa Honda); I think it was just because I was so focused on what was happening in "Radiation House" with all the different patients, stories, diseases, and the daily lives of the technicians.

Each technician had their own, very interesting, back story and I am so glad they took an episode for each person to explain all of the characters personalities because in doing so, it didn't seem like there was just one main character in this entire show. The director was especially interesting with all of her different drinks and the way she popped up; so was Dr. Kaburagi who was a tough one to like at first, but he definitely grows on you!

I really did watch this show just because of Kubota Masataka and Kenichi Endo, though as I watched the entirety of this show it was really great to see some familiar faces and some new actors/actresses were also introduced, and that lead me to find new shows! Each story in Radiation House was really well told, down to each minute detail, and I really commend each actor, actress, the writer(s), director, and everyone else in this show (production or cast) for getting so well informed about the medical jargon, treatments, diseases, information, and equipment.

This show was a delight to watch! I laughed, cried, got angry, worried, and loved each and every story!

Glad to learn more about the Unsung Heroes at a hospital

“Radiation House” is a heartwarming drama about the behind-the-scenes heroes at a hospital, radiation technicians and radiologists. This is the only drama that I know of that focuses on these unsung heroes, and the reason I watch this drama.

The drama follows the journey of genius doctor and radiation technician, Igarashi Iori (ML). I do find his reason to insist on being a technician a little unrealistic and childish. This also sets the tone of this medical drama. The focus is on the growth of the characters, sparked by the unconventional ways of ML and the desire to save lives through scans and tests. “Radiation House” is not a serious drama about patients, diagnosis and treatments. However, it is really interesting to see the important role of the radiology department and the importance of taking good photographs and scans.

The medical cases are episodic and we also get to know each character one episode at a time. I usually lose interest in this type of format, but it didn’t happen for me with this drama. Some cases are more interesting than others, but none of them is a true tear jerker. They are more heartwarming, except maybe the case of the boy who played baseball with his little brother. I did shed a few tears because the whole situation is just tragic. I also feel that this drama serves as a public service announcement as well. The team really did not encounter too many anxiety-inducing challenges. In fact, everything gets resolved pretty easily due to the genius ML.

Since this is an adaptation from a manga, a few of the characters could be perceived as over-the-top. Took me a little while to warm up to both male and female leads. But there really isn’t anyone too annoying. The Hospital Director and her weird teas are funny and she seems to be a walking product placement for the show.

Romance is almost non-existent. So, don’t go expecting even a slow burn romance (maybe in season 2).

So I was looking at the tv ratings for the spring of 2019 for Japanese Dramas and saw Radiation House delivering and thought What is this drama about. I waited for all episodes to be subbed and watched them right after it was done airing and I must say it was worth the watch because I really loved it.

Story: Some details that aren't mention on here about this drama is that Igarashi and Amakasu were childhood friends. Igarashi moves away but Amakasu promises that Igarashi should become a radiographer while she becomes a radiologist so they can would work together in the future. Igarashi meets Amakasu at the hospital but she doesn't remember him. Throughout the whole drama Igarashi tries to get Amakasu to remember him. Igarashi works with a radiography team that takes images of a human's body. I really love that the main characters of this drama weren't doctors instead it was radiographers. The drama shows that there aren't just doctors in the hospital but there are also radiographers and radiologists that don't get a lot of the credit as doctors do. There is a surprise about Igarashi. There are some "romance" moments in this drama and its teased a lot.

Acting/Cast: This is my first drama watching Kubota Masataka in it and his acting of Igarashi was top notch. Honda Tsubasa's acting has improved quite a bit since the last drama I have seen her in. Endo Kenichi and Asano Kazuyuki were two good supporting actors that had me laughing throughout the drama.

Music: The drama song was called "Remember me" by Man with a mission and its a very good song. It fits the drama very well because Igarashi wants Amakasu to remember him.

Final Thoughts: I can't wait to watch the special. All I know is that this drama needs a second season. Unless the drama special continues where this one ends off then maybe not. Either way I would love if this drama gets a second season. More cases of images to take and the development of Igarashi and Amakasu. I wouldn't mind if this drama got up to 3 seasons like Code Blue. To me this is the best Japanese medical drama. It feels different because of how the doctors/nurses aren't the main role but someone new is. I also think this is the best drama of 2019 as well.

I really love this drama! Apart from it has one of my favorite actors (a.k.a Masataka Kubota), it’s also about a group of radio technicians and how this radio technicians play an important role in a hospital.

At first, I only thought of radio technicians or radiologist as someone who only does x-ray of patient but in this drama, it showed me how the team played a very important role in a hospital.

Also, it’s refreshing to see or watch Hirose Alice (Hirose Suzu’s older sister). I’ve first watched her on Gin no Sagi: Silver Spoon but now, it’s the first time watching her in a major role like this. It nice to see her again!

And before I forgot, my cute pet (a.k.a Nobuyuki Suzuki). Hahahahaha. He’s such a cutie doctor!!

This drama is truly a must watch because it has all the elements you need to feel great after watching it.

Good casting and memorable characters. Each and every character contributed well to the story. You might find some annoying but eventually end up loving them all.

Synopsis does not do justice to how the story plays out because even though it is cliche (with childhood love and promise) the comic timing and emotional touch is just perfect.

What really made me like this drama so much was the fact that you are looking at medical drama from a complete different point of view; from that of a technician. Not from doctor, nurses or forensic scientists. Message that someone with limited power in the field could actually make a difference, is a great motivator to the viewers.

I was grinning by the end of the drama. I was sad to end it because now I have to go find something equally good to fill this void of finishing a great show. I got the closure I needed with hope for a new season which is why I feel satisfied and happy. The conclusion wasn’t over dramatic and unbelievable. I can’t wait for season 2.

Worth the wait

I held off watching this Drama until the SP was subbed, but it was worth the wait. I loved the carefully constructed medical "mystery of the week" and the way the various cases were used as vehicles for, or analogies for, the growth of the team - and sometimes both. The Drama even managed to put an interesting spin on the "kindergarten kismet" trope that I intensely dislike, to such an extent that I was a bit frustrated by the end, while at the same time being impressed with the intelligent ambiguity of the closing shots.

Standard fare that entertains without being too heavy

Radiation House has, in my eyes, a niche audience. I'm a little averse to watching medical dramas because the illnesses alone can be rather depressing, and it's hard to strike a balance between light-hearted and being serious about the medical issues. In a way, this series strikes a nice balance--it is quite entertaining in a predictable way, and there are funny moments and yet it is something that can be taken seriously enough. After a while, the lack of ever-heightening tension and the repetitive structure of each episode can be comforting. Unfortunately, this also means that it is not going to work for people who hope for more nuanced characterization, plot development and a stronger discussion of social issues.

There is something about a lot of Japanese series that charms me even when the series are not outstanding in any particular way. Maybe it's the little touches that make some characters endearing even when there is nothing very significant about the little touches. I like how the hospital's director "treats" members of the staff with a wide range of purportedly healthful beverages, including insect poop tea (this is not made up by the writers--there really is such a tea).

I think the series also involves quite a bit of medical knowledge even though it is probably very unrealistic about the way hospitals function. While the story has a focus on radiology technicians and the importance of their work, it is ironic that the "technician" who stands out turns out to be someone with a medical license, undercutting the message that the specific expertise of technicians is really important. What the story does succeed in doing, nevertheless, is emphasizing that the commitment to and the pride one takes in doing one's work, whether it is regarded by others as important or unimportant, can make a difference in people's lives.

It is hard to heap a lot of praise on the series. While the individual episodes can be forgiven for follow a repetitive and predictable structure without much development, the romance plotline that spans the entire series can be faulted for a lack of real development or a satisfying ending. This is despite the fact that the male lead becomes a radiology technician because of a promise he made to a girl as a kid.

Ultimately, this series is reasonably good entertainment. It's like street food that happens to taste good enough to be enjoyed, but if you judge it by the culinary standards of fine-dining establishments, you can find fault with it. It is best to know and appreciate it for it is. It's nice, and I will go back to the stall again (there's the second season), but I know there is much better food out there that perhaps one does not have the luxury of tasting every day.

Amakasu An.
