Could have been so much more

The premise behind this drama was interesting! It could have been so much more than what was produced. 12 episodes an hour long with more character and relationship development would have taken this show into the high 8s, I’m fairly confident. The chemistry was good, acting was fair-good and I will reiterate, the story was really interesting! I’d love to see what Thailand would do with this to be honest! We are seeing more daring and interesting BL coming from Thailand recently, this could fit in nicely!

Unique concept but poor execution

I was initially excited for this because it was a unique concept unlike other BLs I've seen. I decided to check it out because the ex member of The Boyz (Hwall) was here. This could have been a great story because the concept was new but the execution was just poor. The visual effects were cheaply done I feel like. The acting was okay but the acting of Hwall (Hur Hyunjun) was lacking which made me cringe at times. The kiss scene could have been done and shot better which was disappointing. The ending also left unanswered questions like what happened to Yeonwoo's mom like is she dead or just missing?

COLOR RUSH 1:
The relationship of two people, friendship, falling in love, love, co-dependence, were presented delicately and in the angle of one of the mysterious views and it was a revival. In my opinion, it's by no means a below average "gray" BL series, but it's a little gem that intensified and made the colors in my soul shine through. The school was there, but it was in the background, only as a means to develop the plot. Also, the story was dedicated to both young people and did not run into unnecessary delays. Both main characters gave good performances, I was particularly impressed by the 20-year-old singer, model and actor Heo Hyun Jun in the role of Yeon's "probe" Yo Han. Rating: 8 8 10 10

COLOR RUSH 2:
It was a big disappointment for me that my "darling" - Hyun Jun - is no longer playing in the second series. I was hesitant to even watch. Fortunately, Se Hyun appeared there and with the help of this Korean symposium I watched, because the second main character Yeon Woo didn't really get under my nose with his bobbed hair and long Asian "claws". The story was very rushed and contrived, it kept reminding me that it was fictional and I also missed a larger percentage of the BL relationship between the main characters, which was caught up in the last episode with the "dead fish" kiss. Rating: 4 6 8 6

IN THE FINAL ASSESSMENT, I WILL ASSESS ONLY THE FIRST SERIES, THEN DON'T EVEN LOOK AT THE SECOND SERIES.

COLOR RUSH 1:

A Refreshing Rush of Color

I can definitely understand not giving this show a 10/10, yet I enjoyed the story and world they created so much that I had no choice. The plot is rather unique, and despite there being a very limited time as the show is very short, they explained everything I could have asked about it

While this may not be the highest budget show, I think it adds to the charm of this particular story. Specifically, there’s one scene where Yeonwoo and Yoohan walk down the street together, observing street signs in the night, that feels so gorgeous and real that it has stayed etched in my head since I watched it. The use of grayscale and color is really pretty and visually pleasing.

The acting was pretty great, and I feel like the characters personalities were displayed very well. I could understand Yeonwoo’s inner conflicts and sympathize with him as he figured everything out. Yoohan’s energetic and playful, yet thoughtful emotions are shown really well. I know a lot of people were a bit disappointed with Hyunjun’s portrayal of him, but I think he took on the role pretty well and did a great job for a beginner actor. I also really loved the side characters, though their part in the drama may have been small.

Overall, this is a short and sweet, yet unique and captivating drama that will leave you wanting more of this world! The visuals are dazzling and there are so many possibilities that could be explored within this universe of monos and probes.

great story

The idea for this web series and the development are creative and intriguing. It's a story I hadn't seen before and the emotional development of the characters and how they deal with problems is really well written. It's what carried me through to the end of the story. The moment when he sees the colors is also exciting and the special effect is good enough. Even though it's repeated almost every episode it's always nice to see it again.
This concept deserves a high budget, 16 episode TV series. There are plenty of insights to be had.
The rest leaves something to be desired. Most of all I found the acting weak. Aside from Yoo Jun, everyone else really leaves something to be desired, bringing this series back to a cheap product. A real shame because the potential was immense.

Eye loved it. tu dum tss sry

I like the premise and the couple, the boy with the mask is very cool and interesting and pretty but what got me in this series was the colorful effects that make you feel like you're on drugs or something. As an artist the whole color theme made me really happy actually, the combination of the romance and the knowledge and learning of the multiple shades of each color we know... it's just beautiful. .................................................................................................

Short and Sweet

The good and bad thing about Korean BLs is that they are almost universally short and sweet, easily consumed in a few hours. And while typically a very pleasant diversion, they are often lacking when it comes to fleshing out the story, having fully developed characters, and wrapping up the story neatly. This drama suffered from all three issues, but I still very much enjoyed it.

Pros:
- The acting was overall quite solid I felt. Yoo Jun was definitely a stand out and the most consistent. He perfectly showcased his character's inner turmoil and I really appreciated how much emotion he managed to convey just with his eyes. His chemistry with Hyun Jun was also quite good and they played off of each other well except when it came to kissing. That was painful to watch. Hyun Jun was pretty good, though he seemed to struggle with some of the more serious scenes where he came off almost robotic at times. He did much better portraying Yoo Han's mischievous, cheeky side. Seo Hoo and Hyo Gi had smaller roles but were also quite fun and I enjoyed their addition.
- In terms of the story, there are both pros and cons to this aspect but for the pros, I found the world created absolutely fascinating with this concept of monos and their probes and I honestly would have loved it if it had been explored more in depth. This drama had some great scenes, but one of my favorites was when Yoo Han asked Yeon Woo to teach him the colors he saw. It was such a sad, but poignant scene and I thought it was done beautifully. I also appreciated the reveal of Yoo Han's condition at the end, that both boys were struggling with their obsession for the other, it wasn't just Yeon Woo, and how neither could bear to let the other go. Very interesting and overall well done on that front. The mix of dark and light, particularly towards the end was interesting and added some spice to things. There were some twists that I was not expecting but were handled quite well. The romance developed organically more or less and the dangling question of whether it was truly love or obsession made it more interesting.
- The OST was fantastic. The opening in song in particular really caught my attention and has already been added to my Spotify playlist.
- I really loved the media arts scene. It was a stand out for me just in terms of seeing the characters' development as well as just being a visual treat. Loved it. I also found the way they showed the color rush to be appealing. It's not what I was expecting but I found it to be quite beautiful and well done. I also appreciated the way they switched between how the rest of the world saw things with color and how Yeon Woo saw the world.

Cons:
- With the story, as I said before, there were both pros and cons. One of the cons is the world, which I loved, but I did feel needed a bit more exploration. I really wanted more info on the monos and probes to better be able to understand them. Another was the characterization. Considering the shortness of the drama, they did a good job of introducing the characters and giving enough background to keep them interesting, but, again, I wanted more, especially when it came to Yoo Han. I felt like, despite him being the second lead, we found out next to nothing about him and his life except at the very end and even that was pretty minimal. However, my biggest con in this regard is how the mystery of Yeon Woo's mother's disappearance just ended up on the wayside. There were a few other little side plots and such that were also neglected, but I felt that was the biggest one. I honestly got invested in her disappearance and thought the drama was going to be more of a mystery/crime type deal with the boys teaming up to find out what happened to her, but that didn't happen. In fact, we're left exactly where we started and I found that to be more than a tad disappointing. I know there's a Color Rush 2 that I've heard answers the question of what happened to her, so I may check that out, though the apparent of absence of Hyun Jun makes me a little leery of it.

And honestly that is my one con: the storytelling and the plot holes. I truly wish they had made this into a longer, more fleshed out drama because it had so much potential. It's good as a romance but I feel like it could have been much more than that. I wouldn't have objected in the slightest if the mystery of his mother's disappearance and learning more about the monos had been more of a focal point than the romance. That being said, it's a solid romantic story in terms of their developing relationship and I very much enjoyed it. Overall, it is absolutely worth the couple hours it will take you to watch and, due to its shortness, I would not object to watching it again at some point.

Its rushed but...

It had SOOOOOOOOO much potential but it felt so rushed to me and i felt like I didn't have enough time to appreciate the characters/ story. The episodes should've been 20 minutes long instead of 15 minutes. But overall, the story is really interesting. The ost was great too. If you want to watch a BL in one day well...this is the one (don't have extreme high expectation tho). Kind of glad that was one of the first Korean BL i watched. I know that this review is probably not helping and filled of mixed opinions but that's what Color Rush did to me. Give it a try. You will either find your self in the group of people who adore this series or in the group of people who HATE this BL. Or you'll find yourself in the category of the few people like me, who just don't know what to think about........that.

Lots of potential

It has an interesting concept and lore. I just wish they had dived more into it.
The story that we got is still fine & cute.
I liked the main character, the actor who played him did his job. I hope we get a season 3 that does this concept justice. It had quite a lot of potential that was honestly just wasted. Season 2 is apparently worse so I do not plan on watching it.

Also I wish they had tried harder to find his mom and deal with the main character's trauma involving finding his mom and his fear of finding and harming his probe.

When you have a good idea but the script is due tomorrow

The premise of "Color Rush" is a welcome fresh breeze in the world of BL dramas. The BL genre as a whole generally suffers from a "same premise, different execution" syndrome, often revolving around the mostly unremarkable life of some high school or university students, which for some reason also tend to be members of the communication arts or engineering faculty of their school. While "Color Rush" is also set in a high school, the story manages to stand out with its magical soulmate concept and subtle mystery undertones, turning the BL romance, in theory, into only a sub-plot and not the defining, overarching storyline.

However, the drama does not quite achieve this effect for several reasons, the most glaringly obvious ones being the poor writing and the lack of chemistry between the lead characters.

If it had been one of the side characters that had been hit with the poor acting, it probably wouldn't have had such a negative effect on the drama. But since it's one of the main leads, Hwall, that lacks the proper abilities to portray his character Yoo Han, the entire drama suffers under it. Yoo Han's character feels underdeveloped and his acting is incredibly stiff. Like a puppet that can only follow its master's orders, he just reads his lines with little to no emotion or engaging intonation. It is not so bad as that you would feel incredibly appalled by it to the point that you needed to drop the drama immediately but it is certainly enough to take away from your investment in the romance between the two main characters.

Secondly, the writing is poorly paced and structured. While the first few episodes are also rather fast-paced, it's still in the realm of the understandable for such a short drama. The last few episodes, however, jump from one plot point to the next, scrambling to tie together the many loose ends of the drama, resulting in neither a satisfying conclusion to the mystery nor the romance aspect of the series. At some point, I felt like they were just throwing in a bunch of facts that were never even alluded to before just to find an excuse as to why plot point x ended up the way it did.

Overall, it's not the worst drama I have ever watched and it surely isn't the worst BL I have ever watched. However, it certainly would benefit from a re-write and some acting training for Hwall, as well as simply from a longer duration as 15 minutes per episode are just too short to cover the extensive worldbuilding that is going on here, especially since the drama is only 8 episodes long.

Short but worth watching

If you like short series and BLs it's worth watching.
About R rating... We have suicied thoughts in 7 episode!

First of all story is really interesting and you might really easly get hooked. At some points is not great delivered and some scenes might look rushed, but reason is known, it's just to short to explain everything.
Second thing is acting. Chemistry beetwen Hyunjun and Yoojun at begining it looks little bit akward but I don't think is but thing (ofc as we see it from Yeonwoo's point of view, cuz Yoohan is to up front) Yoojun is really great actor. I can see suffer on his face and I like his eyes express emotions. For Hyunjun... I liked his acting but I don't know what to think it about in last 2 episodes...
Music is beatiful! And production is great even it had low budget. Color rush at begining might be for the first time really funny.
I personally adore whole series. I definitly gonna reawatch show.
This bl have happy ending so don't worry! And lots things are explained in last episode.

One of my all time favorite fated mates BLs

Korean BL Color Rush leaped onto the scene at the VERY end of 2020 and blew my mind. Despite being a typical K-BL short run of short episodes, it was given more legs than 2020′s Mr Heart or You Wish with a strong core concept even with 8 episodes of only around 15 minutes each. Color Rush (with a total run time of c. 2 hours) felt more like a movie than a series and managed to satisfy me because of this cinematic approach.

It drew heavily on yaoi manga staging and storyboarding, we can see this in many of the over the shoulder shots, actor stances and postures, and framing techniques. Since I love this style, it contributed to my enjoyment of the series without distracting me.

It also broke ground in many ways for BL:

1. It neatly avoided some of the pacing issues of K-BL with a magical realism component that forced intimacy in the first episode (in-world justified use of the fated mates or soulmates trope).
2. They cast a known (former) K-pop idol in the seme role - Hwall from The Boyz. Not all that unusual (see Wish You) but they gave that idol a near perfect role for him and he executed it beautifully. He is a dancer by training and the role required him to do most of his emoting via physicality.
4. It was concept driven, in that it had a strong fantasy component, like Cherry Magic. However, Color Rush used the fantastical as an aspect of visual story telling (Cherry Magic was audio) which allowed it to be less soft, sweet, cute and more tense, sinister, dramatic.
5. The narrative backbone was an insanely perfect allegory for queer first love and the coming out experience without beating us over the head with it.

Thai BL may be my stan, but Color Rush is my bias, and it topped my list of BLs to beat going in to 2021. Okay I’ll stop using K-pop lingo now but basically I really flipping LOVED COLOR RUSH.
