Howdy y'all! It's been a long time and I am back, so grab that bucket of popcorn and a large glass of wine... I mean soda and let's watch some movies.

This week I decided to put my CSI skills to use and dive into my favorite genres: Mystery, Thriller, and Crime.

PARALLEL LIFE

Parallel_Life.jpg

Country: South Korea     Year: 2010     Genre: Crime, Drama, Law, Mystery, Suspense, Thriller

Is the Parallel Universe Theory real? Is it possible for two human beings to experience the exact same fate of events in their lives, regardless of how many years apart? Kim Seok Hyeon (Ji Jin Hee) is about to find out.

Not long after becoming the country's youngest appointed criminal judge, Seok Hyeon is approached by a reporter (Oh Ji Eun) who is researching a 30-year-old case that seems to parallel Seok Hyeon's life. One night Seok Hyeon's life is turned upside down when his wife, Yun Kyeong (Yoon Se Ah), is found brutally murdered. The events surrounding her death put him and his daughter Ye Jin's (Park Sa Rang) lives in danger.

Can the case from 30 years ago help Seok Hyeon find the killer and prove the existence of Parallel Life?

Ramblings

I loved everything about this movie. The suspense, the action, and the ending that I DID NOT see coming even though I put all the knowledge that I acquired from many hours of watching the CSI and Law & Order franchises to work. After watching many Mystery Thrillers, my opinion stands that Parallel Life is one of the best-written scripts. This leaves real clues as to why the ending was the best direction to make.

I give this 4.5 out of 5 Gimbap

MONTAGE

Country: South Korea     Year: 2013     Genre: Crime, Detective, Drama, Investigation, Mystery, Thriller

15 years ago, Ha Kyeong's (Uhm Jung Hwa) daughter was kidnapped and killed. With five days left until the statute of limitation expires, she contacts the detective that used to be in charge of the case. As Detective Cheong Ho (Kim Sang Kyung) investigates the past case, a similar abduction occurs with details that only the killer from 15 years ago would know.

Ramblings

The premise of the story is your basic murder mystery, but what Montage lacks in the storyline is made up for in the details, direction, and tempo. I can certainly look past the faults of this movie because of the cast. Uhm Jung Hwa brings her usual A game to the role and I am just as impressed with Kim Sang Kyung every time I watch him.

I give this 4 out of 5 Gimbap

The Truth Beneath

Country: South Korea     Year: 2016     Genre: Thriller

The National Assembly Election will take place soon and Yeon Hong (Son Ye Jin) fully supports her husband, Jong Chan (Kim Ju Hyuk), in his campaign to become a member of the assembly. On the day the campaign begins, their daughter Min Jin (Shin Ji Hoon) disappears.

Ramblings

I will say this is a definite "must-see" but only with a better translation. The version I watched had decent translations BUT it still took something away from the movie. I enjoyed what I understood and the movie has Son Ye Jin. Come on, could you ask for a better actress? :)

I give this 3 out of 5 Gimbap

Only until I get the chance to re-watch it with better translations.
