Currently Watching: Circle

So now I have finally caught up on this drama after being thoroughly distracted by E3, SORRY!

That being said, let me start by saying "WOOJIN-AH! SARANGHAEYO!"

Seriously, how can one man be so good looking? *Drools*

I first discovered this drama while stalking Yeo Jin Goo, who plays Kim Woo Jin in this drama, and I must say that what I thought this drama was going to be and what it actually is are two different things. Now don't be discouraged by my words, this drama is great! Originally, I was expecting some War of the Worlds type of show but I was wrong.

The first thing that pulled me into this drama is that I've never really watched another drama like this before. This is a show with aliens, mysterious deaths, a paranoid twin, crazy scientists, cool detectives, a sterile new world, emotionless people, murder, the list goes on and yes I am being very general and unspecific on purpose so I don't ruin this great drama for you. I highly recommend this show!

Circle: Two Worlds Connected has two interconnected storylines that appear in each episode. "BETA Project" takes place in the year 2017 and "Grand New World" takes place in the dystopian year 2037.

BETA Project

In "BETA Project", we're introduced to the twins Kim Woo Jin, played by Yeo Jin Goo, and Kim Bum Gyun, played by Ahn Woo Yeon. This is where the alien part of the show begins and I'll be honest, I'm at episode 8 and I'm still not sure where it's going or what the show wants to do with it.

I'll give you the general explanation, the twins discover a woman they name Byul who appears (and it's pretty convincing) to be an alien. Flash forward several years and Woo Jin is now in college, various suspicious deaths are occurring around his college campus and his brother is in jail, for well, let's just say he appears to be crazy and unstable yelling about aliens and such. However, Bum Gyun is released and this raises Woo Jin's suspicions that his brother may have something to do with the deaths occurring.

I'll stop there as I don't want to spoil things for you, but I can say with confidence that I barely touched the surface of this show. So many more twists and turns take place within BETA Project that correlate with Grand New World, I swear at the end of every episode my mind is blown.

Grand New World

In "Grand New World", we're introduced to Kim Joo Hyuk played by Kim Kang Woo who is a detective on Normal Earth in the year 2037. Now I say Normal Earth because, in the year 2037, the Earth is dying and looks to be nearly inhabitable. Due to this, Smart Earth was created which is safe to live in and completely crime free. There's only one catch, in order to live there you have to have an implanted chip that controls your emotions and behaviours.

Kim Joo Hyuk becomes entangled with Smart Earth when they receive a distressed call from Smart Earth that someone is being murdered. Shocking, considering it's supposed to be crime free.

Joo Hyuk not being someone to sit by and do nothing begins to investigate this case and forces his way into Smart Earth where he meets Lee Ho Soo, played by Lee Ki Kwang, a 'very rule oriented straight-laced, everything has its place' kind of guy. Thus his investigation begins and many things begin to unravel.

There are so many things you find out in Grand New World, plus the mysterious connection it has with BETA Project.

Characters

There are a lot of interesting characters in this drama, I really applaud all the actors, they did a phenomenal job.

Like I mentioned in the beginning of this article, Kim Woo Jin is one of my favourite characters in this show and it's not only because he's played by Yeo Jin Goo.

I find the character of Woo Jin to be one of those characters you root for throughout the whole drama, someone you want to have a happy ending. He hasn't had an easy life and the things he has to face in this drama only add to that. Yeo Jin Goo is amazing as Woo Jin, he really captures this character and does such a good job of portraying the wide range of emotions Woo Jin goes through.

I first discovered Kim Kang Woo in Missing Noir M and he does not disappoint in this drama. He plays Kim Joon Hyuk in the show and does such a great job portraying the determination and sorrow of the character that I found myself tearing up at various parts.

Then there's the official bromance of the show between Joon Hyuk and Ho Soo. These two do an amazing job of breaking the overwhelming tension the show brings with their light banter.

You get more and more attached to them as their characters grow and you learn more about their pasts.

So there you have it, an amazing cast, a variety of interesting characters, and a crazy plot full of twists and turns that always leaves your mind blown.

If you haven't already, give Circle a try and mentally prepare yourself for the journey you're about to take.

Til next time! ~ Cub
