I am bringing back this thread. I know it won't be as thrilling as posting as the show was happening and we've lost that magical element of passionate comments as we watched but maybe some new watchers will come along and have some things to say. This is a great drama. Talk about it here if you are so inclined.
I'm posting my review. It might be a quick way to jump start thoughts about this drama and bring in people who are watching it now and have lost their place to comment, praise, nitpick and complain... (Complain? Huh?)
I know, I know...Ahjussi home shopped way too much but Yoon Sung still shouldn't have taken away his credit cards. That was too cruel!
My Review
Alright…Let’s break this bad boy down!
Story: What a story! The writer/s of this drama know how to write! This was action, adventure, revenge and romance done right. As you watch this drama, you notice it is almost like riding a ride. Some of the episodes are packed full of dramatic tension and zip by so fast, when the credits roll you sit there thinking “The hour is over already?” There is a depth and smartness to how the characters are written and for the most part, the pacing of the 20 episodes is framed very well. All good stories need moments of ‘set-up’ and because there are so many bad ass episodes when the action calms and there is a need for some exposition you don’t mind…you understand that its necessary and it builds up the tension for the next stage of “The Plan”. There are surprises around so many corners, moments where you suck in your breath. There are times when you want to pump your fist and times when you want to sob your heart out. There are well timed comedic moments that will have you laughing out loud. Pulling these physical and emotional reactions from the audience is the mark of great story telling. It’s the best praise and prize a writer can get and the writers of City Hunter certainly got it from me.
Characters: The Characters are written so they are not dumbed down for the audience. They are fleshed out so well that you end up having sympathy for a character you know you ought to hate…who deserves your disdain and yet, you feel their pain. Or you may find yourself loving a character that is on a dogged search for and could just bring down your beloved hero. The character of Yoon Sung (City Hunter) is a flawed and fallible hero but he’s smart and ultimately good and I found myself behind him and his cause. You get to see so many moments of kick-assery but you also get to see the price he pays; whether it is his body or his psyche. Also, those he’s fighting aren’t stupid either so he has got a fight on his hands. I like that the writers didn’t make the antagonists stupid and they weren’t always easy for City Hunter to catch. It made this show a delight to watch.
Romance: While I am all for some loving, hugging and kissing…I like that this drama knew when to quit. They didn’t sacrifice the story to serve up the audience lots of drippy, gooey love. Yes, the love is there and the story shows the discovery and build up of that love but City Hunter has a mission. He’s got stuff to do! We get to see how that love changes the City Hunter, puts the “true North” to his moral compass, gives him a reason to want to live beyond revenge and that is a beautiful thing. But thankfully, the writers weren’t afraid to place that story on the back burner. Not only because it made sense in the framework of tale but also, they didn’t pander to us mushy romantic types and force more into play.
Acting: I could go on and on (I know, I already have) but I’ll just say t his. Lee Min Ho does a fantastic job. I was not a huge fan of his prior to this drama but now I am. And I would add that there isn’t one actor in this whole drama that does a bad job. The main characters were cast well for their roles. There wasn’t a time as I was watching this where I cringed or felt cheated that the actor wasn’t serving the story or phoning in a performance. Lee Joon Hyuk (Prosecutor Young Joo) was amazing. Park Min Young (Kim NaNa) was often luminous and pretty bad ass in her right. Kim Sang Joon played (Jin Pyo) so well I hated him and had real moments of sympathy for him. Kim Sang Ho (Ahjussi) ~ I love you! I want to buy you an American Express Black card and let you home shop to your heart’s content!
Season 2: When the 20 episodes are over…chances are, you are going to want one! Watch this if you are hesitating. There’s a reason why there’s about a thousand reviews of this Drama.

Jumping in:
Although I gotta say - coming off the back of such a comprehensive and
expansive review, I feel ever so slightly intimidated. (however - that
has never stopped me before!)
I start with the following disclaimer: I watched this drama at the time
of it's airing, and could hardly contain myself week to week waiting for
the next instalment. However, from here on I'm starting a fresh.
In a moment of weakness, I got my PARENTS (who are in their late 50s,
and typically English) to agree to watch the first episode of City
Hunter with me one day. I was sick at home, they'd come around to lead
some company, and how could they possible refuse a sick and sorry for
herself Abigail. 'OK, fine - just one mind' was the response from my
mother (who has never understood my fascination with Asian drama, and
has a mild dislike of reading subtitles).
We have now just completed episode 5, and I cannot even begin to express
how fun it is to watch my mother turn into Kim Sang Joon (Jin Pyo) fan
girl! As for myself, being able to follow along, knowing the twists and
turns ahead, is giving me a new appreciation of the level of acting this
drama has. I find myself once again, waiting in anticipation of watching
the next episode!
Yoon Sung's just bought Nana's house - how's that going to turn out?!
What's the deal with Nana & Ahjussi anyway?? Will Yoon Sung find out the
truth about his mum? These are the questions that came bubbling from
mum's mouth as she left last time - and of course the most important
question 'Does Yoon Sung die at the end? Because if he does - I don't
want to watch anymore!!' ha. The other question my mum has (in a
typically 'mum' kind of way) 'Does he EVER sleep?!'
I shall have to start keeping a mental note of questions and expressions
as they continue, and post them here - now I know there is a place for
such commentary! Arf arf arf!
More to come following the next instalment of 'abs parents watch
K-drama' !

LOL, please keep it up! :D
The whole post is wonderful, but the "does he ever sleep?" comment is priceless! Next mother question could be "isn't he cold?" Hahaha.
I wonder what her reaction will be to my beloved prosecutor's fate?
I wish I could convince my mother: she would love to share the pleasure and she isn't biased against Asian things at all - on the contrary, she's fascinated by them. But she hates subtitles because her sight isn't very good. So the only solution I see is I dub in voice-over, LOL. Imagine Jin Pyo threatening his enemies with a girly voice in Italian.
How to destroy a drama. LOL

Oh...that would be too funny. That's it. I'm watching this awesomeness again. I gotta freshen up to reply to Abs comments. I have tried hard to get my sister into them. I've sent little MV's of drama OSTs to peak her interest and raved on about Coffee Prince. I even sent her links to 1N2D's because she loves reality TV! No love. She's not going for it.
I can't wait for Abs next installment. This is gonna be fun.

It's such a shame that your mum can't do subs (the only way to appreciate the drama methinks), it would be a fun game to image who'd do a decent voice over! ha

I tried that too - to no avail. I think the only way to do it is - invite [whoever you want to infect with the drama bug] around, ply them with cake (just to get them to agree) and say 'let's just watch the first episode eh? I promise, if you don't like it after that, we wont watch anymore' (knowing full well that once you see one - you want more!)
and you're watching it again?! chincha?! O_o COOL !!! ha ha ha ! that's so much fun. I am totally chuffed about that!
ps - the parents came around last night - so the next instalment is on its way . . . [watch this space]
