At least actors in the West are allowed to look human and use natural facial expressions. They also get to act in a wider range of realistic and fantasy stories. In C-dramas, however, storytelling is already restricted by censorship, and now the industry is also prioritizing beauty standards over acting. Many C-drama viewers seem to be interested mainly in idol romance dramas. You can clearly see it on MDL. Realistic, well-made C-dramas often have fewer viewers and lower ratings simply because they do not focus on romance. Though, to be fair, I admit that I am also one of those people who does not watch enough C-dramas to judge and roast the entire industry. And when I make this comparison, I am talking specifically about natural acting, acting that feels real rather than acting that looks obviously performed. Of course, I know there are also some excellent Chinese actors in this field. Yi Yangqianxi, for example, is the real deal. Anyway, I think this is getting a little off-topic from the drama, so I’ll stop here. 😅

Yes, I’m glad they have the vision, LOL. But still...some viewers abandon genuinely good shows and only watch dramas with excessive marketing, heavy CP promotion and nonstop hype. I would probably get a headache too if I were producing a drama😅

However, even though I have been his fan for a long time, based on my own standards from growing up watching Western series, Hong Kong dramas, K-dramas, and now C-dramas, I still think he needs to improve his acting further if he truly wants to become a genuinely good actor rather than just a traffic star.
People often say that he is not suitable for costume dramas. Well, sometimes I can understand why, because his facial features may not fit the traditional costume-drama beauty standard, and he is not always very photogenic. However, since I have invested so much time in supporting him as an actor, I appreciate that he does not keep accepting the same type of role. He seems willing to step outside his comfort zone and challenge himself.
When he cut his hair short for a role in a suspense mini-drama and appeared with very little to almost no makeup in the reuters to make the character look more realistic, some Reddit users even created a thread just to insult his appearance. They posted photos calling him ugly and questioned why he was so popular. It felt like they were attacking an actor simply because he chose not to remain conventionally attractive on screen and was genuinely trying to improve his craft instead. 🥲
Just like you, one thing I dislike about C-ent is how hard they try to make actors and actresses look like perfect dolls by using excessive filters. Sometimes, actors cannot even make strong facial expressions because Chinese audiences may call them ugly. In my opinion, society has created this problem for itself by expecting actors to look like models in every scene instead of allowing them to actually act.
You know, whenever I scroll through Weibo, the most common compliments I see about dramas are things like, “The ML is handsome” or “The FL is beautiful” and that is it! They barely talk about the plot, the story or the acting. Even in this thread, some people only come here to insult the leads’ appearances simply because they do not match the Douyin makeup standard of beauty 😑
Sadly, I do not think Chinese entertainment will improve much if it continues prioritizing beauty over strong plots, good storytelling and real acting.
