I knew Minglan didn’t take place during the same dynasty (they didn’t have guns in Minglan), but she still had to live within the cultural limitations and that was my point. At the heart of the matter is that women have been oppressed throughout human history, to varying degrees. I think that “Blossom” also took place during the Ming dynasty, and in that drama the FL owned businesses, rejected marriage proposals and was very wealthy on her own. For that particular dynasty, though, it sounds like stuff like that never happened.

That’s more what I meant - a lot of women were not able to break the glass ceiling. I like this being a drama about two relatively normal people trying to make their lives work. Yeah they climb the social ladder and make names for themselves, but I don’t need the drama to end with her breaking the glass ceiling for it to feel like a fulfilling story with a well-written plot and characters.
I love that there is some realism in this drama about the reality for women during that time. I really appreciated the conversation with Mrs. Yan in prison, when Mrs. Yan basically told Tingyun that she needs a man in her life as the laws did not protect women. It highlights the reality that women really do depend on marriage to get ahead.
It’s such a nice change from other historical dramas that in many ways felt unrealistic to me with women becoming powerful officials, owning their own businesses and owning properties. For once we have a FL who has to play within the cultural limitations of the time in order to get ahead. It’s similar to Minglan, where Minglan had to defeat her enemies and become successful while living within the limitations for women.
I hope that the drama stays this way. There are plenty of historical Girlboss dramas out there where the female leads shatter the social norms, often at the expense of realism. I hope that this drama does not go that way and instead continues to balance an amazing FL with the realism.

Marriage because of a mutual respect for the other person, a trust in their integrity and character, and an unwavering belief in the other person’s goodness and capabilities 😭It’s so refreshing in light of a lot of dramas with the enemies-to-lovers arranged marriage tropes. We know the love will come, and I love how the buds of romance have been there for a while now.
Every time Tinyun praises Zhao Ling my heart just melts 🫠 Her letter to her mother, what she said when begging the CP to let him help with the salt case… the comments she has made to others about his trustworthiness. I just. 😭 This drama is so beautifully different and refreshing.
