OK, I finished the whole thing. I feel like that kid Mikey from the commercial where his brother & sister say, "Give it to Mikey. He'll eat anything!" So I watched the whole thing.
I enjoyed it. The cast, save one, performed wonderfully. Still, I don't want to diss that "one" person who I mistook for a mannequin the majority of the time. You know you can buy a mannequin online for 79.95 - cheaper on the budget. I have one question: How did the ML mount a horse with only one arm? His right arm was always posed like a model.
Happy ending? Looking at the ML's face, I couldn't tell. At least the ending shot was of his back - no need to smile, I suppose.
At this point I must admit that I am baffled that the director and scriptwriter did not pull Yu Menglong aside…
I think this is probably the ML's interpretation of the script. It probably asks for the ML to be cold, inscrutable & unyielding. In the ML's mind that means "act like a block of wood"; if so, he's doing a mighty fine job.
OK, so the ML has fainted again. Eyes are closed but honestly, he doesn't look any different than when his eyes are open. I don't like to diss actors but...I rather like the drama as a whole; still, somebody needs to reach over & pinch him during one of his scenes. Would he react or not?
The drama could be really entertaining if not for: the long drawn-out pauses during the characters' conversations (as if the characters are thinking about what to say next; the choppy cuts between scenes (here one minute then gone in a flash). It takes a second to figure out where everybody went; the older brother's mustache. I spend so much time studying it . If they'd raised it any higher, it'd look like cat whiskers.
As an historical drama addict, I really am picky when choosing to watch a modern Cdrama. I can honestly say that so far I find this a beautifully done, emotionally charged drama. Love the FL - she is so kind & honest. Thank goodness she is not the "normal" (would drop this drama in a heartbeat if she was the typical cutesy, ridiculous type.
No English subtitles but still understandable if you are familiar with the history of the Tang Dynasty. During this time, your life is dependent on the whims of others (example: when all the women in the palace were ordered killed if their hair was loose. And all because Wu Zetain was haunted by those she killed).
Well, let's say I'm watching it now because I can't find anything better to do or watch. Pretty costumes, pretty people but I'm afraid it needs something with more depth to pull this off.
If only Viann Zhang could act...It's not the worst drama I've seen nor the best - it's passable if you've got nothing else to watch. I've always liked Peter Ho - just not in this one.
I've watched this drama twice in the last few months. I thought it was OK, no worse than the majority of dramas filmed in 2012 but certainly not a memorable one. If I were to give it a rating it would be a 7 out of 10; it's much better than some of the wuxia dramas which were rated at 10.

These are just a few of my least favorite things.
