Underrated and overlooked, one of the best dramas and OST of 2020! A very well synced and balanced dramedy/mellow drama in which multiple interrelated stories are playing out.
The Japanese cut away too much of the story and as with many remakes the writers do not fully understand the original drama or why it was a big success in the first place because if they did they would not try so hard to improve on the story or think they can make short cuts to a drama that is all ready near perfect.
This drama is totally saved by the acting and OST. The story is half baked and there is too much unnecessary fluff and filler rather than telling a complete story. The lack of attention paid to details and esthetics is also very annoying. When it comes to codependency dramas the one that came to mind early on while watching this one was The Master's Sun however, this one falls way short because it never really explore the origins or root cause of her shape shifting, there is a far reaching clue but it never goes there, thus making it a half baked drama.
This drama starts out unclear as to what type of drama it wants to be. The story is a brilliant sci-fi suspense thriller that starts out with very poor execution and never quite recovers. The first three episodes are messy with over the top slap stick comedy shenanigans and the majority of the characters around the two leads being noisy flaky air heads and bumbling idiots; then it quiets down and turns into a decent drama by episode five. Very unfortunate because I really loved all of this director's (Shin Woo Cheol) previous works.
This is an awesome very underrated drama, it would have been perfect if they had of paid a little more attention to details. They should have done a better job in the first two episodes of explaining time travel based on String Theory: the multi-verse/parallel worlds and that time is not only linear so at any point of change past or future time diverges and creates a new time stream/alternate reality. Until recently most time travel drama plots have been based on the theory of the ripple affect on a linear time line, where any changes to the past will ripple up the time line and change the future or in many dramas change a predetermine/predestine future.
Thank you for an insightful article and Yes, Hyena's OST is totally underrated. Secret Garden set the standards and a very high bar for a well-rounded perfectly synced OST almost a decade ago and every drama since, has been trying to attain that level of OST perfection and some have come very close. And before Secret Garden, there were some notable standout OSTs. All In Stairway to Heaven Full House Goong BOF Secret Garden Kings 2 Hearts Substitute Princess (King Flower) Empress Ki Rooftop Prince Secret Faith Chongdamdong Alice Master's Sun It's Okay That's Love Mad Dogs Criminal Minds On the Way to the Airport Goblin Mr. Sun Shine
