Ya'll I literally cannot move on from this drama! The amazing storyline, the actors, the relationship and chemistry…
I am struggling with this too! It's been a looong time since I've been obsessed with something like this. I want more of all the things that has made The Untamed so incredibly enjoyable to watch, but I can't seem to find something else that hits me in the same way as this has. I have tried starting a few different dramas since this is almost over, but I'm really stuck on this one. Off to reread the novel. again. :D
I've read the novel. The show is definitely gayer than the novel and is super clever about it. In the drama, there…
@Sclt_pimpernel If your idea of romance must include the obvious sort of things like a climactic kiss or a marriage announcement, then Chinese dramas won't live up to your needs - sure it'd be nice, but you know it's not going to happen. However, if you see a romance between two people as something beyond that, then The Untamed really does fit the bill. I really hope you give it a shot.
In the US we can see gay relationships depicted on network TV with bedroom scenes and marriage ceremonies on a fairly regular basis these days but they tend to feel really shallow and thus aren't very satisfying as far as I'm concerned.
The Untamed builds a relationship between the two main characters that is epic while also weaving in those fun but common tropes you see in other romances - like one character grabbing the other's wrist to drag them away from a dangerous situation, multiple fainting spells where one falls into the other's arms, the "my lover is sick so I must put them to bed and care for them" scene, the "oh, you can't walk, so I'll carry you" moment, and countless looks of longing just to name a few. It also goes much deeper than that. I've enjoyed my share of bro-ships in a number of dramas, but this show is on a completely different level.
I will refuse to watch any Chinese dramas that take an original novel that was a BL novel and turn it into, at…
I've read the novel. The show is definitely gayer than the novel and is super clever about it. In the drama, there isn't one shred of evidence that either WWX or LWJ are even straight in the first place.
Truthfully? This show hits all the right buttons for the fan base. It's got the right amount of angst paired with the right sort of fluffiness to ease the pain. The eye candy is all over the place, but the characters are worth caring about. The relationship and chemistry between the two main characters is a big part of the appeal, but there's also a strong plot that keeps the story moving forward. This show was clearly made by people who were big fans of the original book since they did a damn good job of bringing it to the screen with all the extra little moments that fans loved from the story.
Having said that, keep in mind that the number of watchers for this show according to MDL stats isn't actually that high (though I keep seeing that it is super popular in China), but a majority of those who have bothered to rate it at this point find it highly satisfying, thus the high rating. It will be interesting to see how long the rating stays as more people check it out.
All I know is that I didn't expect much when I started, but quickly got sucked into the MDZS world for the same reasons a lot of other people have. It entertains me in all the right ways which is what makes it a masterpiece in my book.
