Title The Untamed
This is the type of show you would be hesitant to watch but the minute you do, it's so good that you binge watch…
This show/fandom seems to have that effect. I said the same thing and figured the obsession would wear off eventually. It's been a month. Not sure it's getting any better.

They married in the novel!
You MUST read the novel. Wei Ying is way more oblivious about the relationship dynamic between him and Lan Zhan for a good portion of the novel. He's also shamelessly and hilariously naughty in ways that could never possibly be in the drama.

After reading the novel, rewatch the drama because you'll have a whole new appreciation for some of those scenes. :D

what ep did you watch until?
The funny thing is, once you get into the meat of the story where the plot picks up, you'll really miss those early episodes where the mood is fairly light, happy, and innocent. They're necessary as a setup to understand the world and the characters, but also serves as a contrast as the story unfolds and things spiral. On rewatching this drama, I really savored those early episodes.

Title The Untamed
what ep did you watch until?
The first two episodes are really kind of meant to be that hook that makes you wonder what the heck is going on - it's okay that you don't understand. I think some people feel unsettled being dropped into the middle of a story like that (because, really, the first two episodes are actually the middle of the story) because they overestimate what they need to know at this point. You really just have to be patient and trust that the story will eventually answer your questions. I love being dropped into the middle of a story and watching the pieces start connecting, but I also understand why it can be off-putting for some people.

I love Zhao Li Ying as well, but I feel the pairing between them would feel kind of awkward, he is (and looks)…
When I started watching The Untamed, I didn't realize how young YiBo was because he pulled off his character so well. It wasn't until I saw the behind the scenes antics that I wondered about his age and looked it up LOL. I feel like both he and Zhao LiYing have the acting chops to make their age gap a non-issue. Looking forward to more xanxia as well!

Title The Untamed
Poor acting, poor story, don’t understand why people rate it highly.
It really is kind of fascinating that this drama is rated so highly. I mean, I know why I
rated it really high. I love it. A lot. Like, I'm kind of obsessed with it.

Clearly we disagree on the merits of the story because I find the story rather rich and full of layers. It's a murder mystery, it's a supernatural fantasy, it's about love, friendship, and family. There's politics and intrigue. There's adventure and fighting and revenge and tragedy. I've experienced this story in many different iterations - novel, manhua, live action drama, donghua, and the audio drama and I'm still not bored of it. Of course that doesn't mean it's a story everyone will love but I certainly loved it and I know that I'm not alone.

There may be minor moments where the acting isn't exactly on point, but there's no way I would consider any of it poor. A big part of why the drama is rated so high (at least as far as I'm concerned) is that these actors - particularly the main leads - do a stupendous job in making us care about the characters they play and convincing us that the feelings they have about their relationships and situations are real. Seriously, I don't usually cry watching dramas, but I get the tissues out for this one. And you wouldn't believe the joy I get from the barest hint of a smile or a meaningful glance.

Whatever flaws this drama may have are easily forgiven because it is so emotionally satisfying - and I don't mean that it's a happy story with a happy ending. I mean that it takes you on a freaking emotional rollercoaster, it shreds your soul with all the pain and tragedy, but then gives you just enough hope and fluffiness to make it bearable to see it through to the next few episodes. I felt like the time I put in watching this was totally worth it. I was highly entertained, thus it earned a high rating from me.

A high percentage of people who've watched and rated this must have felt the same about its entertainment value, thus the high rating. I felt like I needed to try to explain since, you know, you were having a hard time understanding this concept. Just trying to be helpful! :)

Also, I'm kidding. Clearly, you don't like the drama - and that's fine. I'm just replying as an excuse to spout all of my love for this drama. Since you took the time to post such a thoughtful opinion, I assumed you wanted people to respond, right? XD

Ah, but Wei Ying makes people suffer as well. He makes heroic choices, but at what cost? I don't see Jiang Cheng as childish - but maybe it's because I've watched the whole series and understand what his priorities are. There is an episode where he explains his frustrations to Wei Ying and they are legitimate concerns given the world they live in.

Exactly! I feel like Jiang Cheng really is a misunderstood character. Given all the things we know about him: he's super competitive, but Wei Ying beats him at everything and his mother regularly reminds of that, his father seems to like Wei Ying better than him - especially since Wei Ying understands the clan's motto of "do the impossible" better than him, he even feels his sister favors Wei Ying over him at times - it would be understandable for Jiang Cheng to hate Wei Ying, yet he loves him like a real brother.

Aw... don't dislike Jiang Cheng! He's got a lot of pain in his life. His sister is telling the truth when she says that Jiang Cheng really does care a lot about Wei Wuxian even if he comes across as a harsh personality and seems easy to dislike.

I'm watching through a second time too. Even though I've read the book, there's still a lot more I'm catching on this second rewatch which is making it even harder to let go of this drama. I agree that they are both incredibly strong characters which is why I love them so much.

This is honestly the best drama I have ever seen, and I've watched MANY over the years!I still haven't completely…
I got sucked in by the live adaptation too. I only started it because I wanted some wuxia to go along with a couple of the modern dramas I was watching. Next thing I know, I'd binge-watched all of the available episodes and started in on the novel because I couldn't wait for more episodes. And then there was the manhua, the donghua, and the audio drama... LOL I'm just glad I'm not the only one who was so drawn in by this story :D

I read HOB as well - and it helped some. It was definitely a fun read. Still, GDC feels a lot deeper to me so I had to go back to it and reread (and rewatch XD).

I have been blaming Jiang Chen to cause Wei Ying to lose his (Wei Ying's) golden core because Jiang Chen was acting…
I agree. Jiang Cheng really did lose everyone and had to bear the burden of leading his sect at a pretty young age without someone to help balance him out. He does ending up being a pretty harsh character, but cares a lot about the people who matter to him - just like his mother did.
